Wait for the second version of this book… It may be step-by-step but the thought process behind the books step-by-step layout is sporadic… the author is inexperienced at PowerPivot.Common Example page 2-12… the step by step book is explaining how to create and detect relationships. Ok fine, step 1,2,3,4,5, but step 6 does not coincide with the example being worked on, it is a separate step-by-step relating to the “Report Filter drop boxâ€â€¦ which would lead a person to believe that the example they just worked on was incorrect considering step 1-5 references the drop down box “Row Labelsâ€â€¦ Oh But wait, step 7 and 8 reference the Report Filter (the book hasn’t had us create a report filter yet). *It isn’t possible to complete this example step by step.Example #2 Page 2-13, There is a paragraph on how the PowerPivot Field List will simply disappear. The author’s solution was to quit excel and then reopen. This is NOT the case, the field list will disappear when you click on cells outside of the pivot table, it will reappear when you click on any of the headers within the pivot table.A typical step by step book would state 1) click here, 2) go there, 3) etc… This book has paragraphs of information that don’t translate into “why†information…Also—Microsoft has most of these same sample files online for FREE with the actual step-by-step tutorial for FREE. BUT be warned, view diagrams in PowerPivot is useful with Excel 2013 no matter what Microsoft says… The “fix†does not work with excel 2010, I wasted 5 hours trying to install and reinstall.
I don’t normally write reviews, but when a book is a helpful as this a review is the least I could do.Are you a spreadsheet person who thinks that databases are for others – this is the book for you.Are you an Excel master who writes VLOOKUPS in your sleep but have not looked at the PowerPivot ribbon yet – this is the book for you.Got thousands of hours working with spreadsheets but know almost nothing about PowerPivot – this is the book for you.Do you learn by doing rather than do by learning – this is the book for you.
I thought this book was well written, with an integrated approach from the concepts to actual working knowledge.I wish I had found this book, before purchasing other books I bought on Power Pivot.This is the only one you will need, so save the money.This book is difficult to find on Amazon, which is why there are probably no review's on it yet.Somehow I found it, I am not sure how I found but I am so grateful I did.Buy this book if you want to learn Power Pivot.Thanks for writing this book.
I purchased this book in 2013, and I am just getting around to learning PowerPivot now, but I can't get the publisher to send me the 1st part of the sample files per page 1-12 instructions, I should E-Mail them and I have from 2 addresses. No one is home to email me apparently...
I use this book as a reference quite frequently. It is well organized and a good primer for PowerPivotEverything was on time and as expected. I highly recommend this vendor. All was as expected and arrived on time.
