“On the day I was shot, hundreds of pieces of bullet and bone split apart inside me and took me right up to the brink of death, but it was also a day hundreds of things came together so I could survive.â€Congressman Steve Scalise tells this story vividly in a close-up-and-personal way, so that you feel like you're walking right beside him as events unfold. He begins with the trauma of hearing gunshots at a Congressional baseball practice, then feeling an AK-47 bullet blow apart his hip and leg and lacerate his internal organs. He lay on the ground, trying claw his way forward before he bled to death, wondering when the killer would walk over and execute him.He explains how he saw his past, present, and future life revealed during those moments between life and death. He prayed to survive so that he could raise his daughter to adulthood. He was in intensive care for months, delusional much of the time, and slipping between life and death. His mind as well as his body were wasting away:=====It began another month of being in and out of major surgeries. Another month of long stretches without food. Another month of not being allowed to drink….anything more than a few drops of water….My body was a rigid, atrophied wooden board, knotted up, tight, weak, and useless. My only hope was going to be building up some strength to compensate for the parts of me I still couldn’t move.======He describes the heroes who saved his life. First, there were the Congressional security police, and nearby police officers. They engaged the gunman. Despite being hit in the ankles with bullets and fragments, they kept firing to distract the gunman from murdering Scalise on the field and the Congressmen who had sheltered in the baseball dugout. Then there was his baseball teammate Congressman Brad Wenstrup, who’d previously worked as a surgeon saving severely wounded servicemen in Iraq. Wenstrup kept him alive until he got to the hospital where other doctors with military experience operated on him for months. Scalise’s family and friends from Louisiana were always at his side in the hospital. Bono from U2 learned that Scalise was a fan and called him. Scalise explains how this constant encouragement and prayer from friends and strangers encouraged him to survive and endure a painful recovery. The book shows how fragile life is. The gunman had suffered tragedies in his life, including a foster daughter who committed suicide in a horrific way. His mind had deteriorated into homicidal insanity from that and a variety of causes. Life is destroyed by many causes, including insanity that becomes homicidal, and harms others. Life is restored by the love and comfort from friends and strangers. My other takeaway is how destructive an assault rifle is when misused by a deranged person. The high velocity round doesn’t just punch a hole in the body. It explodes inside the body and pulverizes bones and internal organs. Anyone hit in the head or torso will likely be killed, crippled, or at best receiving medical attention for months. As Scalise explains, the body and mind are severely impaired, and may never fully recover. Hundreds of people from the Las Vegas and other shootings suffered the same traumatic injuries. By telling Scalise’s story, this book tells the story of all those other shooting victims.Read this book to glean the inspiring story of Steve Scalise’s amazing life and his determination to survive his grievous wounding. It also tells the gruesome story of what it is like to receive a devastating gunshot wound and recover from it.
I purchased this book because I wanted to show my support for Steve Scalise and the trauma he experienced. Little did I know that it would turn out to be one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read in a long time. I had no idea that his ordeal involved so many near death experiences. It was truly a very difficult time for he and his family. Steve manages to bring the entire experience of his into minute focus. His writing style grabs the reader from the beginning. He is a true patriot and a man of faith. I’d encourage every American to read this book. It truly represents what the heart of our nation is at its most fundamental level. God bless representative Scalise and I pray that God continues to use him in his life. He is a remarkable human being.
......Steve Scalise's book had been released, I could't wait to read it. I was one of thousands who had prayed for him, and I knew his story would be filled with on-the-edge-of-your-seat, breath-taking and earth shattering life and death days of God's mercy, grace and miracles. But I had no idea how miraculous ! I ordered my first copy on Kindle and as the photo shows, I couldn't put it down. It will be on my Christmas gift list for family and friends. AMAZING story! AMAZING God!AMAZING man, this Steve Scalise . . . and you will meet some amazing people on every page.
What an amazing story!. Could not put this book down even though I knew the ending as I had just seen Congressman Scalise on TV. With co-author Jeffrey Stern, Scalise describes the horrific June 2017 shooting at the baseball field as the Republicans practiced for their annual game against the Congressional Democrats. This is followed by a description of his year long progress from a very critical experience in one of the top Trauma centers in the country, followed by an extended experience in ICU with numerous surgical procedures with so many complications. His personal drive to complete rehab in record time so he could return to Congress, his family and friends is amazing. The book is riveting, well organized and inspirational to all. As a former Trauma nurse, who worked with so many gun shot victims, I recognize that his book is an incredible testimony to all the silent heroes who are well trained and who made a difference in survival. One such hero was Congressman Brad Wenstrup, who recognized the severity of Scalise's gun shot wound from previous combat experience, rendering the appropriate medical care as EMS arrived on the scene. But more that that, it is an amazing story of his personal drive to survive.
Could not put this book down, recommending it to everyone I talk to. This story is about American Spirit, it’s about the best in each of us & how our actions big & small matter every day. Hope & Love restored. Thank you Congressman Scalise for writing your story & oursâ¤ï¸ðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸
I finished this book, appropriately enough, on Thanksgiving Day. Too many of us are forgetting what the holiday's name means. There aren't many heartwarming, feel-good stories around political figures these days. This is one. It is a story of grit on one man's part and a refusal to give up hope, combined with an almost incredible series of small miracles in the form of dozens of people being in exactly the right place at the right time with the right training, gear and experience, without any of whom he would have died.99.9% of us forgot the shooting within a week, in the constant chattering of the 24/7 news cycle. Majority whip is not a position constantly in the public eye. It is (you should pardon the phrase) the ultimate in political inside baseball.Anyone who has been through rehab for an illness or sports injury knows what a grind it is, but a catastrophic injury is different order of magnitude altogether. Scalise never gave up, never became bitter, never blamed anyone but the guy behind the trigger, and gave all the credit to the people who helped pull him through.I won't give away the spoilers, but I shed a tear or two at the book's final scene. I hope you will too.
