In December 2016, the book discussion group met at The LGBT Center in NYC to discuss this novel by a famous, but now rather ignored, British writer. While one member couldn't finish the novel because of the language and several readers commented on the very thorough descriptions of every vista, bush, and extraneous thought expressed, all of us liked the novel and some of us rather loved it.It's a bit old fashioned (perhaps in the best possible way) and British (originally published and a best seller in 1958). But the psychology and insight into human behavior remains realistic, and the discussion why characters are attracted (and repulsed) to religion and to each other rings true. In many ways the plot seems like an old Agatha Christie mystery with a group of unlikely characters drawn to a country house with a series of extraordinary events unfolding to reveal the characters' motivations. A number of the jokes and wacky characters are still funny and clever. The novel starts a bit slowly, perhaps why a few readers had a problem getting interested in it at the beginning. After I got to Chapter 7, however, which describes Michael's and Nick's school affair that took place many years before the current events of the novel, I was committed to the story, the characters began to be rounded out, and the story takes flight. But I was captivated from the first pages and was WOW-ed by the end of the first chapter when Dora arrives at the train station for Imber Court with a butterfly in her clasped hands. The spiritual setting is not a deterrent. I never felt preached to, even though "The Bell" treats us to two extensive sermons that advance the nature of the characters and resonate with the plot. Murdoch is very even-handed in her treatment of religion and the non-religious, even pointing out the forced silence and presumed loneliness of the cloistered nuns. It's probably good to mention that all the names are very British and meaningful. The officious James Tayper Pace is always referred to with all three names (say it out loud), Nick stands in for the devil "Old Nick," and most of the religious community has appropriate New Testament names, which serves to make Toby stand out as a real outsider. The novel itself is full of parallel characters and mirrored events: James Tayper Pace and Michael - each with their very different but paired sermons, the drunk Nick and his idealized identical twin sister Catherine, mismatched couples such as the Greenfields and the Staffords, the two mishandled affairs that Michael has, two suicides, and even the two bells (which are like characters). "The Bell" was written well before Gay Liberation, but Michael's and Nick's homosexuality is very open and non-judgmental. There's little coming-out trauma or questioning of the characters' gayness although period-appropriate homophobia is realistically presented. (In retrospect, James Tayper Pace is probably also gay but celibate, and Toby will turn out to be bisexual.)The ending is a bit of farce: lots of running around, unexpected appearances of characters, costumed towns people, missed connections, and lifesaving nuns. One of the saddest moments in the novel, however, is the howling of Murphy the dog before the long denouement. It's worth thinking about what the physical bells represent (something that wakes you up, the truth mired in muck?), as well as Nick's final "sermon" and act of destruction.I had a hard time imagining the physical layout of the Imber buildings around the lake, so I've created a map and attached it. If anybody has corrections or another proposal, send them and I'll update my map.
This is a book about religion and sex. The holy and the secular. Love and discord. Community and solitude. Hope and despair. This classic work by British novelist Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) is rightly considered one of the greatest English novels."The Bell" is the story of a lay community and their guests who live at Imber Abbey, all of who are well-meaning men and women, but each of whom is beset with personal problems. Attached to--but separated from--the lay community is an Anglican Benedictine convent, whose members vow to never leave the grounds. Enter the bell. The convent's tower once had a bell, and the legend of its disappearance is a central thematic part of the novel. The community has commissioned a new bell, which arrives and is "baptized." I shall reveal no more!"The Bell" has everything you want in a novel: an entertaining plot, wholly-developed characters that seem to pop off the page, poetic language (every word is important), and for the English majors in the crowd lots of imagery and symbolism to be analyzed and enjoyed.
Murdoch indulges her obsessional musings (not worthy of elevation to the appellation of "philosophy") about love and God with tiresomely repetitive observations about innocence, purity, idealism, and reality. The omniscient narrator jerks us around until, by the climax of the book, I simply didn't care at all and couldn't wait for the book to end. "The Bell" was published in 1958, and for its day was both painfully contemporary ("he worked like a black") and ahead of its time (in suggesting an extreme ideal of universal bisexuality). Murdoch conceivably considered herself in the living of her own life to be "advanced" in this regard. One very odd detail is Murdoch's use of the word "rebarbative". Did she have an editor? Can anyone read this book and not wonder at her using this distinctive and rather odd and precious word many, many times. Early in the book the narrator offers the observation that one of the characters learned this word at school and adopted it with particular fondness. Is her choice to have the omniscient narrator repeatedly use this word meant to indicate an identification with that particular character? Who knows? And who cares?

Because I liked the edition of SKETCHES FROM A HUNTER’S ALBUM that was translated by Freeborn, I ordered his version of FATHERS AND SONS for a class of mine this spring — and quickly regretted it. Part of every discussion was spent in making basic sense of the text; not only is his translation clumsy but there are lots of printer’s errors. An example: “Arkady got on with Katya. Odintsova with Bazarov and so it usually turned out that both pairs, after spending a short while together, went off each on their separate ways….â€Maybe the most unusual and annoying quirk of Freeborn’s is his frequent and completely unnecessary use of the word “literallyâ€:- “his pipe literally jumped up and down in his fingersâ€- “She literally ‘went into hiding’….â€- “he had literally felt himself sitting on hot coalsâ€- “You’ll literally forget my physiognomyâ€But the biggest problem with Freeborn is his lack of good judgment when it comes to choosing the right word. Whether he wants to be different or simply doesn’t know better, he makes some strange decisions, the most obvious of which is his use of the word “mister†when it should be “gentlemanâ€:- “He’s a mister of genius!â€- “You’re a dangerous mister.â€Once I got to that, I understood why the book was selling for $5.03.
“Fathers and Sons†by Ivan Turgenev, published in 1862, takes place in “Old Russia†with its horse-drawn vehicles and serf-society, but it is as current today as it was groundbreaking then. The older (the Fathers’) generation is seen as behind the times, too conservative, or too liberal. Nihilism was popularized by this novel. The younger generation portrays itself as worldly, sophisticated, and hip. The sons are often highly critical of the fathers. The social politics foretell the eventual revolution to come 65 years later.Though most of the characters are “old moneyâ€, landed pseudo-aristocrats and Russian military in background (and reasonably well educated – at least the men) thus giving the reader a view of Russian life from their perspective, the thrust of the novel illuminates the age-old differences between the generations and the gaps between science and superstition.“Fathers and Sons†is not a sweeping epic tome that launches you into the great endless Russian landscape. Rather, it’s short, about 220 pages, and yet is filled with adventure, great characters, a little humor, personal triumphs and tragedy, to say nothing of the sounds, smells, tastes, travels, food and drink of the day. Thus, it is tidy and centered only on the story of the particular fathers and sons. It’s a sumptuous brief novel which reads exceedingly well and quickly. The translation is modern and apt. Each of the 2 sons (who are great friends in their 20’s at the time of the novel) are as different as can be. At first for during the initial 40 or 50 pages or so, I began to think the 2 young men (the sons) were “more†than just pals. I was wrong about that and glad for my mistake. Their growing pains and pleasures, constrained by culture and protocol of the time, seem normal and universal by the end of the story. One — Arkady Kirsanov – eventually marries happily and the other – Yevgeny Bazarov, the nihilist …. well, you’ll have to read it to find out.Not one page disappoints. “Fathers and Sons†is true treasure to discover and devour. It’s a 5 for sure, a classic.
One of the best Russian novels of the nineteenth century, and a great place to start for anyone looking to dive into Russian literature. Set in mid-nineteenth century Russia, the novel tells the reader a great deal about life and society of the period, as well as the intellectual movements affecting Russian life and society. Moreover, and what makes this novel so enjoyable and easy to read for anyone, it contains universal themes about love and relationships between parents and children, and how those change as children grow and come to view their parents differently. I've read it probably a dozen times and love it as much each time. I can't recommend it enough. I assign it to my classes and students always like it too.
This is my second novel by Turgenev. I enjoyed "Sketches from a Hunter's Album," better. The beginning of this novel, was intriguing while the author illustrates the plot of the characters. However, it becomes quite tedious with his introduction of additional characters whom do not play an integral part of the story. One can assume based upon the title that the author wishes to portray Father & Son relationships in a mid-19th century setting, yet both of the relationships which the author foretells does not end with any real purpose or conclusion. This was a disappointment. Nevertheless, the central theme revolves around the generational continuity between children and their parents even in the amidst of societal philosophical differences. It is in these differences which remains consistent from one generation to another. A phrase in summary with a perspective that regrets that look like hopes and hopes that look like regrets result when youth has subsided and old age has not yet come.
Overall I enjoyed this sometimes I find Russian literature a tad "dry' but this story had a bit of everything to appeal to most readers I felt. The relationship between a father and his son I felt as applicable today as it was in the past. The older and younger generation, some dynamics don't appear to change overmuch. All of the characters on offer were well portrayed but it was the abrasive Bazarov who finds he is not as immune to what happens around him the most interesting.Enjoyed the clash of ideals, culture and class. Another offering from the Boxall 1000 list and well worth the time.

I would like to say that this is a very good book and one of the best of those books that I have studied for Autodesk Inventor. It covers basic and advanced steps in modeling. Also I like their approach "Process-Based", this tells that this book does not explains only features of Autodesk Inventor but also tells in details the process to create parts and assemblies. Definitely this is my preferred book for Autodesk Inventor and I would suggest to anyone that is new to Autodesk Inventor because it is very easy to understand. It is frustrating to see the mistakes with titles by this author, particularly because she seems to put a lot of research into many other details of her stories. My daughter read this book first out of the series and has declared that she won't read any more because the errors in title address were so annoying to her. Given who the main characters are, the errors are most prevalent in this book. The address for Lord and Lady Heatherton are correct, but then the author constantly calls Lucas Calvert, Earl of Annesbury, Lord Calvert. WRONG. His name is Calvert, his title is Annesbury. He would be addressed as Lord Annesbury. (For some reason, this does happen once in the book, but then is wrong every other time.) Also incorrect is calling him Lord Lucas Calvert. If you wish to introduce the first name, it should be Lucas Calvert, Lord Annesbury. Also annoying..and incorrect, is the author's habit of addressing the Earl's mother as Lady Pamela. She is Pamela Calvert, The Dowager Lady Annesbury. Or, less formally, Lady Annesbury. The only time Lord/Lady FIRSTNAME LASTNAME, or Lord/Lady FIRSTNAME, is used is when the individual is a child of a Duke, Marquess, or Earl (in this case, all daughters, but only an eldest son...it's complicated), when there is no other title that supersedes it as either a courtesy title from a lesser title of the father, in the case of an eldest son, or a title by marriage, in the case of a daughter. There is a lot to know about titles...too much for me to explain it all here, but it honestly takes very little time to research this information online. There are numerous websites with pages/posts devoted to correct peerage title use. Debretts even has a website.Another issue that I have is the author's tendency towards language that is slightly too modern. I have mostly ignored it, but the word "maybe" is driving me crazy. At the time, they would not have used "maybe" all the time. They would have used "perhaps", or even "mayhap". Further, they would not have used contractions as frequently as written by this author. All that being said, I really do enjoy this author's books...but I had to give vent to the frustration that has been building throughout the series. The author creates an engaging story and compelling characters and is thorough in many areas if research. If one can overlook the errors in title address, then this is a great read.
I don't like to leave negative reviews, but since there are currently no reviews less than 4 stars, I think it is helpful for readers to see a divergent opinion. I read lots of regency romances, and this is the second book by the author that I have read. I did not really care for the first, but I thought I would give this one a try after all the glowing reviews. I stopped reading at 65% because I wasn't enjoying the story and found it boring. I like to read this genre for escape and comfort reading, so I found the grief of both characters to be a downer. I like there to be sparkle and banter and fun, and there was absolutely none of that. To me they did not have any chemistry as their whole relationship had a sad cloud hanging over it. I also don't care for stories like this that feature children and parenting so prominently because, as a parent, I am looking for escape and would rather not read about other people's kids. This is just my personal preference- but give me balls and gown shopping over nursing sick kids and breaking up fights, please. So, this fell flat for me but I do see why others enjoyed it. The writing and storytelling are solid, but it doesn't measure up to what I am looking for in a romance.
How do you find another great love when youVe been blessed to have already found and lost the love of your life? Virginia and Lukas experience all of the emotions you'd expect finding the answer to that question, and I found myself laughing, sighing, and crying with them. This is a lovely story with a very satisfying ending. Oh, and you won't have to skip any pages to avoid peeking in someone's bedroom. Thank you, Ms. Britton, for a very entertaining afternoon.
Romance is not my favorite genre. I keep saying, but then I find myself unable to put down Britton’s books. I’ve finished each of the four so far in one sitting, and I’ve reached the point where I can’t decide which one I love most in this series. The Earl and His Lady, like all of Britton’s books, is character driven, and it is those characters that really make this book worth reading. Both Virginia and Lucas are introduced in other books of the series, but I loved getting into their heads, seeing what they think, what drives them, why they do what they do, as they try to navigate their new life together. It is Britton’s ability to make the characters feel alive, real, that pulls the reader in and will leave you hanging on until the end.
He is a widower with a kind but broken heart. He needs an heir. She is a new widow with two children who are being threatened by their uncle. To protect her children, the widower offers her marriage. And to protect her children, she reluctantly accepts. His lonely heart responds to her, but she still grieves her first husband. Will this family ever truly be his. This was such a beautiful love story. It does not disappoint in any way.
A pleasure to read a regency romance that is without sex descriptions. The story was moving and the main characters realistic worthy individuals. The topic of grief was handled well and accurately.
I have pre ordered this jem right after I have read the gentelman doctor. It is a very satisfiying pure read. And a great instruction about how to treat a grieving woman.

I downloaded the first three John Milton books, the Audible versions. There is a LOT to like in these books. They move right along, the characters are more than ciphers and have distinct personalities, and the hero is a great fighter and tactician but isn't perfect and can be damaged. The problem is the constant ignorance about guns. He talks about Glocks having safeties. In this book, the hero buys a SW .45 (he calls it a "point four five) handgun. He says he got it for less than $500 and it came with clips that held 13 rounds each. Okay...so it's a semi-automatic. Smith and Wesson do make a 1911 now (which is what he describes) but then he calls it a revolver again and again...even while maintaining that it holds 13 in the clip and one in the chamber. Oh, and he starts calling it a Springfield, not a Smith and Wesson. He says Milton bought the handgun at an El Paso gun show where one table had a sign saying "no background check, no paper." No...you can't do that at any gun show. I'm a 61 year old with extensive firearm experience, who has worked with local, state, national (FBI, Homeland) and international law enforcement officers. We all know that there has not been more than a handful of crimes (and zero mass shootings) committed with a firearm purchased at a gun show. If you go to one anywhere in the US, signs are up everywhere forbidding private sales between citizens without a background check. Sure, it may happen in the parking lot but there is usually police presence there to make sure it doesn't. BATFE agents roam the aisles and the parking lots as well. Milton says every kind of firearm he has used in the military and his life as a assassin is available. No, it isn't. No fully automatic firearms are for sale at these shows. Those firearms require a Class 3 license to buy or sale and that requires a TON of paperwork, months and months of checks, the top LEO or a judge has to sign off on it, you have to pay a special tax and, after all that, there are many, many States that will not allow a citizen to own one even after all of that and a ton of cities as well. I've gone to over 50 gun shows and have never seen a Class Three firearm for sale. Not even in Texas. I love the flow of the books and I will try to download more but the gun mistakes just keep piling up and it is very distracting. Makes me wonder what else he is getting wrong. [Not Dawson's fault, but the reader is great with most accents but terrible with the Texas ones in this book. The Texas guys sound like Carmen on South Park had a kid with a Mississippi governor from the 1920s]
In the third action-packed book featuring Mark Dawson's rogue assassin on the run, John Milton, Dawson delivers an exciting, fast paced, no-holds-barred story that keeps pages turning. John Milton is back again and is on the run from Control [his former employers] and finds himself in Juarez, a town with a reputation for being called the City Of God, because not even the Devil himself would dare to visit. I really liked the first novel THE CLEANER and SAINT DEATH does not disappoint as we learn more about John Milton and his motivation to turn from assassin to a man that just wants to help people that need it.In “Saint Death†Milton is working as a chef in a kitchen and it is while he is doing that that he is witness to an attempted assassination; Milton intervenes, taking out the group of assassins and saving their target, a journalist who has been writing a blog about the local cartel [and they don't like that}.What follows is Milton's attempt to get the girl over the border to safety while being pursued by the cartel and their most dangerous killer, the Santa Muerte aka Saint Death. And if that isn't enough, the Intelligence group Milton is trying to evade has tracked him down to Mexico because he was fingerprinted at the police station after foiling the assassination attempt on the young journalist. The final scene is a big shootout between the cartel, and six intelligence/special forces agents as they come to a head in trying to kill John Milton. The Saint doesn't leave much room to breathe. I love the kind of books that just keep you wanting to read to get to the end, and honestly, I haven't come across a series of books in a long time that can do that. The stories are simple enough with low complications so that you don't get too bogged down in big details or over-the-top complex plots that you'll soon forget if you put the book down for two days. The end of the book leaves you wanting more as John Milton has escaped/evaded capture, but he's on the run in a stolen car and heading back to the States.Action-packed, a real roller coaster ride with characters that are compelling and real, Mark Dawson's John Milton is as real as bad-ass heroes get. I'm looking forward to keeping up with this series!
Another good action thriller from Mark Dawson. This offering takes John Milton, an on the run former assassin for the British government, to Ciudad Juarez. While working as a cook in a restaurant, Milton interferes in the attempted murder of two bloggers and a young girl telling her tale of surviving the drug cartel. While two of those are killed in the attack, Milton makes it his personal job to see that the third makes it out of Mexico alive. As with many good thrillers there are parallel plots involving an honest Juarez cop, a bounty hunter and Milton's former employers who are still trying to kill him.In The Cleaner, Dawson told the story of the poverty in London's East End. In Saint Death, Dawson weaves the factual disappearances of women that has plagued Juarez over the past few years into his tale. While reading The Cleaner is not really necessary to enjoy this novel, it does help the reader in understanding why British Intelligence is trying to capture/kill Milton.

I'm very pleased with this book, and have installed a number of the apps on my Kindle Fire. I have several kindle devices, and have learned via this book, how to customize my fire and maximize the usefulness of all my kindle devices. Thank you so much for teaching me how to entertain myself and my family, and how to do a ton of other things with my Fire!!! 😊
This is a nice e-Book if you are looking for a nice gamut of usable apps that are risk free for your Kindle Fire. You will be able to find a nice collection of apps to enable your to provide you with any information that a full on desktop/laptop can provide. Worth the perusing and its always there ( for now).
This book is definitely worth the $0.99 I paid for it. Found a few cool sites, and learned some tricks and stuff I was not aware of. Liked the links to the various travel sites, and the translation site as well.
Hello Mr. Ed Jones,Just finished reading the 200 Free Apps book.I recently purchased the Kindle Fire HD and I am so unequite for this tablet but I wanted a tablet(already have a pc) to start learning how to navigate one because two others that I had purchased I found hard to even do anything on or get accquainted with them so I returned them.Anyway, when I purchased the Kindle, I thought I would google tutorials for beginners on it and went Amazon came up with those books: I jumped on them, especially at the price offered. I was surprised they were digital but excited too as they downloaded right to my Kindle and I was able to take advantage of the tips, and other information in them. I also read the other one: Tips and Traps... Which was my first purchase.Thank you so much for the simple way you express how to get use to my Kindle and what to do with it. I was able to even download from my Amazon account the books to my laptop and finish reading them there. On my first day, I was able to download a movie and watch it as well. This time, I did a lot of research and googling to find out what to do once I got the Kindle so I would not be in the dark as to how to operate it.I also have to admit; I love the set up on the Kindle Fire HD and find it more user friendly than any of the others I had purchased and sent back!!Again, I just wanted to thank you for the two books I read and the massive amount of very useful information that anyone, beginner or experience can use!!I will also sign up for your email updates on the Kindle Fire HD.
This is a good book, just not for me. I did read it and it does have a lot of good apps, but I was looking for one subject only. It did help but I didn't find very much on what I wanted
If you are looking for worthwhile free apps you definetly will be glad you got this booklet. Aside from listing many very good free apps with notes on use, it provides lots of useful tips on getting material not normally used on your Kindle Fire on board and working. You will spend a couple of hours reading and trying new apps (they are free and it tells you how to delete them) so feel free to experiment! I found it a very useful resource.
While I didn't expect too much from what I had thought would be a catalogue of apps, I was pleasantly surprised. The introduction was the same as throat book I read, that is where the similarity ends. The apps were discussed individually, with a few having honorable mention for compatibility with the app being elaborated upon. It was wonderful to learn of the purpose of each app. It was also surprising to learn how many of the apps are at more extensive in covering less thought of features that greatly increase their inherent value. In all, this book is worth the price, both for reference and catalogue like qualities.
I finally stumbled onto the exact kind of "how to" ADVICE BOOK I have been looking for. The author explains how to use an App by steps, "do this" then "do this". That is the only way I can figure out the procedure, but I have to say, I 'm getting better because I keep reading "doable" content like this one. While reading the book I was also laughing at myself because at my age I am becoming obsessed with Apps; I even thought about the one that simulates flying a plane. I thoroughly enjoyed this short, to the point Kindle help book. It's a keeper. SES/ Houston

From the Back Cover
Twenty years after shocking the world with the Black Dahlia murder, could Dr. George Hill Hodel have returned as a killer unlike anyone had ever known?Former LAPD detective Steve Hodel has devoted the last decade to examining the fascinating and mysterious life of his father, Dr. George Hill Hodel. His findings indicatethat Hodel was one of the most prolific serial killers in history, beginning as a young manand continuing to kill undetected throughout his life, including his possible involvement inChicago's "Lipstick Murders" and the series of killings in 1960s California by the man who called himself Zodiac. In Most Evil, Hodel compiles never-before-seen visual, cirucumstantial, and forensic evidence that reveals his father as a serial killer who may have been responsible for some of the most infamous murders of the last century.

#71,850 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
I've read all of George Hodel's books over the years. What he wrote in the first turned out to be true. People were skeptical at first, but facts have come out that show it's not just likely, more like obvious, if you follow how Hodel has put all his ducks in a row.I was skeptical about this book. The Chicago and Manila murders seemed likely. But not Zodiac. But just like he did with the first book, he keeps layering facts. He's come out with another book, with additional evidence and there is new info on his website--layer after layer. So skeptical or not, I have to say that Hodel is building another solid case. It must be a bit difficult for him emotionally when he steps away from his roles as author and investigator. When he's back to being George Hodel's son, it must be awfully wrenching.
I'm not 100% convinced but Steve Hodel makes a good case showing the parallels between the Black Dahlia Killer and the Zodiac. As the primary witnesses age and pass on, a definitive 'he did it' is unlikely barring a DNA match that could show Dr. George Hodel was involved. I'd recommend reading Black Dahlia Avenger first to get a handle on the prime suspect. Robert Graysmith's Zodiac book gives better overall look at the evidence in that case and comes to a completely different conclusion. Graysmith had never heard of George Hodel's very real connection to the Dahlia case, as those files were sealed at that time. Had Hodel been publicly named a suspect in the Dahlia case it's very possible he would have been looked at for Zodiac as well.
Most Evil is one of my all time favorite true crime books! I was a child living in the Los Angeles area when the Black Dahlia murder occurred. I remember it being in the LA papers. When the Zodiac Killer roamed the San Francisco Bay Area, I lived in Marin County and was scared many nights when my husband was away. I have read Most Evil more than once and will probably read it again. Thank you Steve Hodel - you have a number one fan.
After thoroughly enjoying Mr. Hodel's page-turner, "Black Dahlia Avenger", I was very eager to dive into "Most Evil" and was engaged from page one of this riveting true-life thriller.Once again, Mr. Hodel affords the reader the luxurious intimacy of fly-on-the-wall status as he presents his readers with compelling facts that strongly suggest his late father, Dr. George Hodel, was indeed the infamous "Zodiac" killer. Countless photographs from the "Zodiac", "Black Dahlia" and other cases (as well as from the author's personal collection) enrich the details Mr. Hodel puts forth. We are also given a history of Dr. George Hodel's involvement with the "Black Dahlia" (Elizabeth Short) murder (which the author meticulously spells out in "Black Dahlia Avenger") in order for us to better understand his father's tie to the "Zodiac" case. This is no campfire story. Mr. Hodel (with Mr. Pezzullo) presents his case in layman's terms so the reader feels he/she is being treated to an engrossing story over a multi-course gourmet dinner and a fine wine.True crime story lovers who appreciate exhaustively-researched books will get a great deal of enjoyment from "Most Evil" (as did I). Treat yourself and make this your next purchase!
Steve Hodel makes Sherlock Holmes look like an amateur! While he has been derided for naming his father as the most notorious serial killer of the 20th Century, he has supported his investigation with unlimited circumstantial evidence and while it is "circumstantial", it is so completely explained that there is no doubt in my mind that his father, Dr. George Hill Hodel was the infamous murderer of The Black Dahlia while also being "The Lipstick Killer" ("stop me before I kill more!"), San Francisco's "Zodiak" killer and perpetrator of other unsolved killings.Though it appears on the surface to be a ridiculously fanciful thesis, Mr. Hodel, a retired homicide policeman has in my opinion, solved these crimes, tying them together with a motivational thread and accompanying the text with copious illustrations. This book is impossible to put aside.Bravo, Steve Hodel. This could not have been pleasant for you.
That's not hyperbole -- I feel he truly has. The moment I read that his father was influenced by James Joyce, the word play in the Zodiac letters came chillingly into focus. This alone, coupled with the (thankful) rarity of George Hodel's madness and the huge canvas he was painting on (which Steve Hodel has highlighted by giving us his father's aesthetic perspective) makes it highly unlikely that there could exist *two* people as crazy and brilliant as the BDA and Z. It would be easy to chalk off the correspondences he highlights as simple coincidence mistaken by pattern perception, but the background and structure behind the theories makes that assessment highly unlikely. This is a brilliant analysis. I do wonder if his father persuaded Steve to become a detective. Perhaps that is why he is Daedalus who made the flight through brilliance without his wings burning while his father (Icarus, with the father/son roles swapped) did not. George Hodel was an insane genius -- happily, his son is a sane one. That is evidenced by this book.
