I agree with other reviewers that Mr. Ashura clearly either did some major research or was tapping into real life experience of High School joy and angst in this book. I was in school just a couple of years before this setting, but found myself very personally involved in some of the characters lives and walking down memory lane. His descriptions of events were spot on in my estimation. I thought he messed up on the date of one thing in this book (which is perfectly fine for fiction) but after research I was mistaken.The first thing I noticed about this book was that it started much darker than the previous series (Castes and OutCastes) by this author. The first chapter set the tone for the villains for this book and it was very dark. By the second chapter I thought this was to be a novel for young adults and very uncomplicated. When I continued reading, I found that it was very enjoyable to a middle aged guy like me. I believe that this series will have enough story to interest all ages of readers. The story was very well written and seems to flow well. I read the entire thing almost in one sitting as I didn't wish to put it down. While we are really just being introduced to this cast of characters in this new series, the major players were well fleshed out for the most part and of course there are the mysteries for future works. That being said this book had an enjoyable fitting conclusion or really just a stopping point, which I love in a series. I really hate the cliff-hanger and wait a year to continue type series. I look forward to continuing with this series and I am anxiously awaiting the next book. The action is excellent and I am most anxious to see where the romance relationship is going. I also love the crossover from Mr. Ashura's previous series and would have never guessed that it could have crossed over with one of my favorite characters. 5 stars, well done and what I have come to expect from this author.

Nick's performance confirms that he, once again, deserves the credit given him as one of the top narrators in fantasy today.Fans of Rick Riordan, Suzanne Collins, and Brandon Mull will find a new home with The Chronicles of William Wilde. Those who loved Indiana Jones, the Goonies, and E.T. as kids will also get lost in this Urban Fantasy.This story is magical. Both literally and figuratively. Ashura has managed to unfold an adventure to us that bridges the generational appeal, promising to delight middle-aged audiences all the way down to high school audiences, much the same way that STRANGER THINGS has done. As a 40-year-old, I found myself living in a nostalgic time through the story, with all the 80's references, while not being able to take the ear buds out as the plot sped along. The magic system is just being introduced, and we get to learn with the characters. For a while, I wasn't sure who was on whose side. With a fair amount of twists and discovery, hints of teenage love, and plenty of adventure, William Wilde and the Necrosed promises a rollercoaster thrills to a wide audience. You will not be disappointed.
William Wilde and the Necrosed is a book that has magic, mystery, and action in equal parts. The setting is a large American city in the mid-1980s, and to make it as realistic as possible, the author clearly did some research, as well as draw from his own memories. There are plenty of references to 1980s pop culture, similar to what I and other readers enjoyed about Ernest Cline’s novels (Ready Player One and Armada). I enjoyed reading The Castes and the Outcastes trilogy by Davis Ashura, and I definitely like this first book in the author’s new series about William Wilde. The characters are likeable and well fleshed-out in straightforward prose, with plenty of amusing banter among good friends, which was one of the aspects I really liked about The Castes and the Outcastes. In fact, one of the characters from The Castes and the Outcastes shows up in this book, which is a real treat. I like Brandon Sanderson’s different systems of magic in Elantris and the Mistborn series, so I also like the unique systems of magic and fantasy world-building novels of Davis Ashura. Even though this is the start of a series of books, it has a satisfying ending to stand on its own, along with the promise of more magic, mystery, and action in future books.

Jessica Kisiel’s “Winning the Injury Game†is not just a book, it is an education! Jessica’s journey into her own misalignment, imbalances, back pain, muscle inequality and more drove her to explore the root causes of bodily chronic pain and how to manage it or get rid of it entirely.The book is more like a workbook which asks the reader to take an active role in their own recovery. Her explanations, diagrams and exercises guide the reader to help heal themselves. She has obviously done her homework and her research is extensive.She also debunks several commonly held beliefs, such as the benefits of “belly breathing†that just don’t add up.Jess helped me with my scoliosis pain and misaligned hips. Her personal sessions combined with many of the exercises in the book, helped my pain reduce significantly. Definitely worth reading and getting an education!
I’ve read this book twice it was so good. The author explains things in a way that are easy to understand. I’ve seen doctors and physical therapists for a issue I had. While helpful the book was better because you can understand the issue you have and what is needed to be done to correct it. Which in many cases the author explains can be due to alignment issues above the area causing pain. Highly recommend. My wife a yoga instructor is reading it now and loves the book

"Winning the Injury Game" by Jessical Kiesel is a must read! As a Certified Egoscue Method Practitioner, I find this book to be very complete and detailed. I like that it takes the importance of Postural Alignment , breathing, among other things and explains them in detail as well as the graphics that compliment the text. Jessica has done an excellent job detailing her own journey with pain and how she overcame it. I recommend this book. It is a great tool to have and refer to when one has chronic pain.

The book Black and White: From Snapshots to Great Shots is well written and lacking the usual acronyms you may find in forums and blogs. It took me weeks to figure out what OOF and IQ meant. Regardless, I know there were complaints about how this book (and DVD) were geared toward Lightroom and Nik Silver Effects Pro and their complaints are justified. However, I use both of them as well as Adobe Elements 10 and a few Topaz Labs plugins so I don't have the same complaint. John Batdorff presented the use of this software with some of his own images which he also described how he captured them and I thought he did it very well in both the book and the DVD but it helps if you are familiar with this type of software. My only complaint about the book and DVD is too much time is spent on 'whats in my camera bag'. I have one other book from PeachPit press that does the same thing and it's a waste of time. One thing I don't use Canon or Nikon gear, I use Pentax. In fact I have a Pentax K-5 and a K-7, along with a number of lenses that I have acquired over the past several years and I'm very satisfied with them. And I have no intention of switching to CaNikon because this sort of thing is at best a promo and that also includes the type of software being used. Finally, if you don't have this software this book and DVD won't do you any good. Personally, I like both software packages very much but don't go out and buy it because it's recommended. You will have to determine what your needs are and to have both packages will cost several hundred dollars, something to consider. Lots of stuff out there, do research!
I bought this book in Kindle format and I wish I'd gotten the actual book. One of the great features in Batdorff's book is the analysis of some of his own shots, helping you to actually see his techniques in action. It was difficult to see them in the Kindle version, however the book is a great resource for improving your black and white skills from the moment you click the shutter release to the time you walk out of a store with the print in hand. It is not overly technical and is illustrated every step of the way. For some the section on using Photo Shop will be a great addition. For those of you (like me) who do not have it, it is difficult to wade through trying to apply it to the program you do have. I am an exception to the "rule" and if there was a way to put four and a half stars up there, I would have. Black and White: From Snap Shots to Great Shots is an excellent book to have on the shelf if you're interested in improving your black and white photography.
I own a LOT of photography books, and I mean A LOT! This is the first one that I have read cover to cover............twice! I still use it as a reference on a pretty ongoing basis. The book is very clearly written and progresses in a logical manner covering everything from the what and why to convert images to black and white, to a detailed work flow for getting the look that projects your vision. The book is quite easy to read. The volume contains enough basic information for the novice and enough detail and tips to engage an experienced amateur. I found the chapters on how to "see" in black and white particularly useful, especially when this is coupled with the technical data for the sample photographs. John presents his workflow in a concise, logical manner. He carefully lays out not only what he wants to achieve and how to achieve that, but also why he takes a particular path with a given image. Check out his website [...] to see some of spectacular images he has created that appear as examples in his book. If you are at all serious about honing your skills in black and white photography, you must have this book! If you will use this book as much as I have, you should consider taking it to an office supply store for spiral binding. For a few bucks, they'll slice off the glued binding, punch the holes and snake through a spiral binding that will allow you to lay the book flat and significantly decrease the wear and tear on it!!
Believe it or not, this is the book that got me off my butt and back out taking photos... I even upgraded to the SONY A7. That's how inspirational this book was for me. Love it... it's practical, no BS, to the point, and enjoyable to read. Very practical which means you can get out there straight away and start using the advice in this book. Use it or lose it!

As the title of the book suggests, this is a good book for someone new to Lightroom as well as Nik Silver Efex 2. The author covers the whole workflow from capture to printing, and has advice on equipment selection as well as basic photography skills like composition and exposure. This will give someone stepping up from a point and shoot, or someone not familiar with doing their own post-processing and printing, a solid foundation. The book is mostly well written, and easy to understand.
A great book for the serious photographer. I am self-taught and serious about it; I expect this book will help me get even better in my "work." Highly recommended.
I'm very interested in landscape and street photography and will surely be making many images black & white. Not only did this book cover aspects of B&W photography but also exposure and thoughts about how to think up your images.

I bought this book because it was on one of those $.99 lists and I thought, "What the heck." This book took me back 50 years to some of my first pre-teen adventure books, e.g. the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book is written from the standpoint of the protagonist who is pretty much a current pre-teen (I have 2 and one teen) with a wry irreverent sense of humor, as have many of the characters, "We don't say the "c" word." It's not the "c" word you think. The book is fun and fast moving and if you have teen/pre-teens you will recognize a fair amount of their behavior while chuckling at them. The adults are also somewhat caricatures of the typical adult, but probably as many pre-teens see us.It's fun. If you are an adult read it with your pre-teen, early teen as something to do together or in the car on a trip. You may surprise yourself that you have really enjoyed it.

When you read about Percy Jackson’s adventures, like all other awesome books, you feel like you are the main character. You feel like you’ve beheaded a hydra, blown up the Gateway arch, and held a lightning bolt in your hand.The story starts with Percy warning us about reading it. Like something about if you find something familiar, then close the book immediately. Um, I read it on a Kindle, how can you close a Kindle?Then it goes on about his life. When his mom takes him on a vacation to the beach away from his abusive stepfather, she tries to get him to a camp to stop a minotaur from killing him. Yeah, a minotaur. On the way there, he finds his best friend has goat legs. Like a lot of other stories, Percy loses consciousness.When he wakes up, he finds himself in a camp full of half-gods, satyrs, a centaur, and a god of wine that always says peoples’ names wrong. Then he finds that the minotaur has sent his mother to the underworld and he has killed the minotaur. When he finds out he is the son of the sea god, Zeus gives him a death threat because he thinks that Percy took his most powerful lightning bolt.Then Percy has to go on a quest along America, fighting monsters, metal spiders, and medusa. And then into the underworld. When he does, he finds a terrible mistake…and a traitor. But enough about that! I don’t want to give you too many spoilers.I actually watched the (TERRIBLE!) movie about Percy Jackson before I read the book. After I read the book and watched the movie again, I decided that I would never watch the movie again. (Seriously, make a note: Never watch the Percy Jackson movie). The book is infinite times better, and in my opinion they ruined everything when they made the movie.Yes, I own all of the Percy Jackson books, and all of the Heroes of Olympus, the next series. Rumor has it that there is another series about norse gods and heroes. As Dionysus would say, “You’ve heard of Peter Johnson. Now, get ready for Magno Cheese.†(Magnus Chase)
My 10 year old son has read everything by Rick Riordan and absolutely LOVES the series. These books are good enough to tear him away from his iPod and keep him waiting by the mailbox for the next book to arrive! Now I'm reading them too, and we have dinner conversation about Greek mythology and American history. Recommended for any young person learning the joy of books!
I knew of the series because of the movies being released and being a big Harry Potter fan, similar genres. When my son and I finished the HP series we went looking for something else. The Percy series really hit the spot. No spoilers for the story, but the book also made my son curious about mythology.
This was a book that my son was eager to read. This was a required reading for 5th grade and he finished it pretty quickly.This is the beginning of the series and Percy Jackson is a very interesting book. I love that it's good for all ages, I enjoyed it as well.Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.
The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. It is fast paced, well-written, and full of loveable, believable characters -- even if they are children of gods. This whole series is an excellent read for anyone, and a choice pick for parents who are looking for exciting, fun, clean books for both boys and girls to read.As a school librarian, I could rarely keep this book on the shelf more than half a day. As a grandparent, I've gifted it to the grandkids, and even given copies to adult friends. It is one of those rare finds these days: a truly well-written, good book with a universal theme that still manages to be fresh.
While this book is intended for a younger set, I, an older set, still enjoyed the adventures of the accused lightning thief, Percy Jackson. This tale was interesting, convoluted and moved along at an enjoyable pace. One learns quite a bit about the Greek and Roman Gods as the pages are perused and you try to puzzle out how he is going to get out of the predicament he currently was in only to end up in one after another. It was a nice read.
I love mythology long before Riordan published his first Percy Jackson books. I love his books and creative ideas of setting mythologies into our modern era. When I saw that they were doing an illustrated version of "The Lightning Thief", I knew that I just had to get a copy. It makes re-reading all the more fun! The illustrations are beautiful, they are done by the same artist who illustrated Riordan's "Percy Jackson's Greek Gods" and "Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes". I hope that like the Harry Potter series, they will continue to do more illustrated version of the other books in the series.
