I bought this book because it was on one of those $.99 lists and I thought, "What the heck." This book took me back 50 years to some of my first pre-teen adventure books, e.g. the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book is written from the standpoint of the protagonist who is pretty much a current pre-teen (I have 2 and one teen) with a wry irreverent sense of humor, as have many of the characters, "We don't say the "c" word." It's not the "c" word you think. The book is fun and fast moving and if you have teen/pre-teens you will recognize a fair amount of their behavior while chuckling at them. The adults are also somewhat caricatures of the typical adult, but probably as many pre-teens see us.It's fun. If you are an adult read it with your pre-teen, early teen as something to do together or in the car on a trip. You may surprise yourself that you have really enjoyed it.

When you read about Percy Jackson’s adventures, like all other awesome books, you feel like you are the main character. You feel like you’ve beheaded a hydra, blown up the Gateway arch, and held a lightning bolt in your hand.The story starts with Percy warning us about reading it. Like something about if you find something familiar, then close the book immediately. Um, I read it on a Kindle, how can you close a Kindle?Then it goes on about his life. When his mom takes him on a vacation to the beach away from his abusive stepfather, she tries to get him to a camp to stop a minotaur from killing him. Yeah, a minotaur. On the way there, he finds his best friend has goat legs. Like a lot of other stories, Percy loses consciousness.When he wakes up, he finds himself in a camp full of half-gods, satyrs, a centaur, and a god of wine that always says peoples’ names wrong. Then he finds that the minotaur has sent his mother to the underworld and he has killed the minotaur. When he finds out he is the son of the sea god, Zeus gives him a death threat because he thinks that Percy took his most powerful lightning bolt.Then Percy has to go on a quest along America, fighting monsters, metal spiders, and medusa. And then into the underworld. When he does, he finds a terrible mistake…and a traitor. But enough about that! I don’t want to give you too many spoilers.I actually watched the (TERRIBLE!) movie about Percy Jackson before I read the book. After I read the book and watched the movie again, I decided that I would never watch the movie again. (Seriously, make a note: Never watch the Percy Jackson movie). The book is infinite times better, and in my opinion they ruined everything when they made the movie.Yes, I own all of the Percy Jackson books, and all of the Heroes of Olympus, the next series. Rumor has it that there is another series about norse gods and heroes. As Dionysus would say, “You’ve heard of Peter Johnson. Now, get ready for Magno Cheese.†(Magnus Chase)
My 10 year old son has read everything by Rick Riordan and absolutely LOVES the series. These books are good enough to tear him away from his iPod and keep him waiting by the mailbox for the next book to arrive! Now I'm reading them too, and we have dinner conversation about Greek mythology and American history. Recommended for any young person learning the joy of books!
I knew of the series because of the movies being released and being a big Harry Potter fan, similar genres. When my son and I finished the HP series we went looking for something else. The Percy series really hit the spot. No spoilers for the story, but the book also made my son curious about mythology.
This was a book that my son was eager to read. This was a required reading for 5th grade and he finished it pretty quickly.This is the beginning of the series and Percy Jackson is a very interesting book. I love that it's good for all ages, I enjoyed it as well.Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.
The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. It is fast paced, well-written, and full of loveable, believable characters -- even if they are children of gods. This whole series is an excellent read for anyone, and a choice pick for parents who are looking for exciting, fun, clean books for both boys and girls to read.As a school librarian, I could rarely keep this book on the shelf more than half a day. As a grandparent, I've gifted it to the grandkids, and even given copies to adult friends. It is one of those rare finds these days: a truly well-written, good book with a universal theme that still manages to be fresh.
While this book is intended for a younger set, I, an older set, still enjoyed the adventures of the accused lightning thief, Percy Jackson. This tale was interesting, convoluted and moved along at an enjoyable pace. One learns quite a bit about the Greek and Roman Gods as the pages are perused and you try to puzzle out how he is going to get out of the predicament he currently was in only to end up in one after another. It was a nice read.
I love mythology long before Riordan published his first Percy Jackson books. I love his books and creative ideas of setting mythologies into our modern era. When I saw that they were doing an illustrated version of "The Lightning Thief", I knew that I just had to get a copy. It makes re-reading all the more fun! The illustrations are beautiful, they are done by the same artist who illustrated Riordan's "Percy Jackson's Greek Gods" and "Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes". I hope that like the Harry Potter series, they will continue to do more illustrated version of the other books in the series.

About the Author
Alison Ford is an Associate Professor of Special Education at Syracuse University. She works collaboratively with the Syracuse City School District to prepare teachers, develop curricula, and design program models. Her recent work has focused on the development of community-referenced curricula and strategies for teaching students with severe disabilities in the life of the school. Roberta Schnorr is a doctoral student in the Division of Special Education and Rehabilitation at Syracuse University. She has served as the coordinator of the Syracuse Curriculum Project at the University, working directly with a number of school districts involved in curriculum development efforts for students with severe disabilities. She has had extensive experience as a special education teacher. Luanna H. Meyer, Ph.D., is Pro Vice-Chancellor at Massey University College of Education in New Zealand. Luanna H. Meyer's research has focused on inclusion, cooperative classroom management, challenging behavior, and multicultural education; she has authored more than 200 books, research articles, and book chapters. In her previous position as Professor of Education at Syracuse University, she also directed the Inclusive Elementary and Special Education Program. The work in her chapter for this book was supported by and carried out while she was Director of the Consortium for Collaborative Research on Social Relationships of Children and Youth with Diverse Abilities and the New York Partnership for Statewide Systems Change at Syracuse University. Linda Davern, M.S., is a doctoral student in the Division of Special Education and Rehabilitation at Syracuse University. Her past positions include that of research assistant with the Syracuse Curriculum Project, public school teacher, and adult service worker. Her primary research interest is focused on integration efforts in public schools. Jim Black, M.S., is a Training Specialist in the Syracuse City School District, where he is involved in developing curriculum and instructional practices that prepare students with disabilities for active participation within integrated school and community environments. He is currently the president the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps. He is also a doctoral student at Syracuse University where his research has focused on issues such as the social validity of work performed by persons with severe multiple handicaps and paraprofessional training. I teach pre-service teachers in the special education field. This book is old, but it's the best curriculum (really the only curriculum) I've found that teachers (OR PARENTS) can simply pick-up and immediately begin using for individuals with moderate to severe needs. It's simple, easy to use, follow, and understand, and includes examples, ideas, assessments, and IEP resources for curriculum (AND SKILL) development. It's an absolute must for your resource library and a wonderful supplement for general education teachers (AND PARENTS) who need to modify the curriculum (or teach their child) to be as independent as possible and successfully included.
This was assigned in a graduate level course but I cannot express how useful it has become in practice. I love the life skill themed curriculum that is expressed here, from useful money skills, reading skills, time skills, learning household tasks and more. It is easy to use, and can be helpful when writing IEP goals.

This text has stood the test of time and gone through at least 10 editions...It is still the best straightforward, practical resource on teaching children with moderate to severe disabilities. The field of special education has changed greatly since the first publication due to new legislation such as NCLB, ESA, etc...However, this text offers teachers the best balanced approach to teaching because it emhasizes the development of academic AND functional skills....I hope it is around forever...

This book is packed with detailed (research proven) notes on tons of cut flowers. It is an amazing reference book for cut flower growers and I wish I had purchased it when I first started growing on my urban flower farm. Don't think of it like a normal read though, it is a thick encyclopedia of cut flowers (best germinatuon, harvest, storing, planting techniques for each variety). I took off a star for the super lame damage to my book. I bought it new, but someone crammed it in the packing sleeve and bent the front corner. I also took a picture of the sloppy binding job. If I purchase something new then I expect better quality upon arrival. For shame Amazon.
Excellent info, but only reason for only 3 stars is that the paperback version is soooo much smaller font than I thought. Can I exchange it for a larger version? Maybe a hard copy would be easier to read font size.

this book is for the serious cut-flower grower detailing over a hundred annual and perennial plants used in the cut flower trade, seeding, cultivation, and fertilization requirements, post-harvest handling tips, and recommendations on best varieties to grow. while the photos are unfortunately not in color, the details of the text make up for it. this is a vital reference for anyone serious about pursuing cut flower growing. text is concise without being overly dry. very handy and useful!

Easy read and nicely illustrated with simple drawings to explain many of the finer (and confusing) points of cricket. Over the years I've had a number of my English friends try to explain the game of cricket to me, but all in vain. Invariably it ended in complete confusion. However, having read and studied this little book, the curtain has lifted on some of confusion just a bit. Yet, though reasonably enlightened, I think the real problem lies in the fact that the game of cricket was never meant to be understood fully by the American psyche. It's totally British and can only be fully understood and appreciated by those raised with a sense of the game's history and traditions.Nonetheless, this is a fine little book and one which will certainly give you a better understanding of this most English of games---cricket!
Great book. Quick read with a thorough explanation of the game. As someone who knew almost nothing about cricket before reading this book, I feel as if I could now watch a cricket match and understand most of what is happening. One important thing this book does is avoid getting too technical. Yes, it explains what many of the common terms mean, but it avoids going too in depth into statistics and strategy that would lose many readers unfamiliar with the game. If you know very little about cricket and want to better understand the game, this quick read is the book for you.
For a quick reference guide, one can hardly do better. There is not an overwhelming amount of depth to the book, but as a 'now what exactly was that bit again' kind of work, it's brilliant. The author has a nice, light tone but still manages to make cricket really approachable, even for someone who either doesn't know or even doesn't want to know about cricket.
I am a newby to cricket and was having a hard time finding any books on the rules of cricket, this book is perfect. I appreciate that it is not highbrow nor do they talk down to the reader. It has been a pleasure to read and has answered my questions, (along with Google). I had to look up what the "follow-on" rule was. Test cricket is something else!
This is a very readable book. As an explanation of cricket it goes a long way toward explaining how an apparently boring game can possibly become interesting. After reading I was motivated to find a cricket match on YouTube. The explanations were very helpful but I still find the game, the commentary and the very long times of inaction baffling.
Even an American can understand this explanation
As an American wanting to better understand the game of cricket, this book was invaluable. With so many Cricket Clubs in the Philadelphia area (they're now really just country clubs) it is sad they cricket is no longer played on a regular basis. Haverford and Pennsylvania used to be the two cricket powerhouses of American collegiate cricket, nowadays not so much.
If you are new to Cricket, this is a must-have book along with Cricket Manual: The Official Guide to Playing the Gameby Andy Tennant. The only two you will need!
