Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of November 2016: Over the course of a single day in New York City, two teenagers who have nothing in common randomly meet and fall in love. Now I know that sounds absurdly cliché, but somehow in Nicola Yoon’s hands, it doesn’t read that way. Natasha is a practical young woman trying to keep her family from being deported in a matter of hours. Daniel is a poet at heart, but on this day he is dutifully making good on his familial commitment to a college interview. The two are inexplicably drawn to each other and somehow their paths keep converging. The novel is told in alternating points of view, and one of the special touches of Yoon’s book are the chapters narrated by people who are unintentionally part of Natasha and Daniel’s story, mirroring our almost spooky interconnectedness. The Sun is Also a Star is a thought-provoking story of possibility, fate, and the illogical beauty of love. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

Gr 8 Up—It is Natasha's last day in New York City, where she has lived for 10 years. Her family, living as undocumented immigrants in a small Brooklyn apartment, are being deported to Jamaica after her father's arrest for drunk driving. Natasha is scouring the city for a chance to stay in the United States legally. She wants the normal teen existence of her peers. Meanwhile, poetic Daniel is on his way to an interview as part of his application process to Yale. He is under great pressure to get in because his parents (who emigrated from South Korea) are adamant that he become a doctor. Events slowly conspire to bring the two leads together. When Daniel and Natasha finally meet, he falls in love immediately and convinces her to join him for the day. They tell their stories in alternating chapters. Additional voices are integrated into the book as characters interact with them. Both relatable and profound, the bittersweet ending conveys a sense of hopefulness that will resonate with teens. VERDICT This wistful love story will be adored by fans of Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park and by those who enjoyed the unique narrative structure of A.S. King's Please Ignore Vera Dietz.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH

This is definitely a young adult novel. It reminded me of the movie Serendiptiy but with teenagers. I think it would have been better if the characters were adults with a bit more history to compare their "love" too. I really enjoyed reading it though and I flew through it. It's actually a pretty short book (the font is large and the "chapters" are often 1-2 pages and sometimes even less), but it was also hard to put down.
I loved this book SO much but I find it hard to write a long review for books that I love for some reason so I’m simply going to share my feels through lists. What I liked:The Characters:Yoon really has a talent of making her characters so vibrant and fleshed out that they practically jump off the pages. It’s such a diverse cast of characters that it just wasn’t your plain Jane- cyst gendered white individuals. The writing:To my surprise- I really enjoyed Nicola’s writing style. It flowed so well and even if it technically a “slow†part of the story, I still had to force myself to stop reading because I didn’t want the experience to stop. The format:This novel was told in alternating pov’s between Daniel and Natasha which switched every other chapter. Occasionally, there was a extra little chapter written in a pov from someone that you wouldn’t even expect to be important to the story. For example, one of the chapters was in the point of view of a security guard that Natasha comes in contact with for just a mere two pages. You wouldn’t think that the stranger’s point of view had any way of propelling the story forward, but chapters like those were probably my favorite of the book and it just made it so much more unique than it already was before this format was introduced. The story:A huge theme of this book is Immigration. Natasha was born in Jamaica but is at risk, along with her family of getting deported back after her father’s DUI. Yoon does an amazing job at really humanizing immigration so you can actually understand what they are going through, which I think is really important. The romance:Daniel and Natasha fall in love in under 24 hours. While this is technically insta-love, it doesn’t exactly feel like it. They get so much accomplished in terms of getting to know each other in that short of a time that it feels like they have known each other for a span of years.Nicola has also made the characters so opposite from each other but so much alike at the same time so that they fit together like pieces of a puzzle. This was such an incredible story that I won’t be forgetting for a very long time.
Nicola Yoon weaves a charming story about two young lovers.Natasha Kingsley is running out of time. She is an undocumented Jamaican immigrant facing deportation to a country that no longer feels like home. Daniel Bae, a first a generation Korean American, is torn between pursuing his passion and living his parents' version of the American dream.By random chance, Natasha and Daniel meet on her final day in the U.S. And what follows is a sweet love story that will help readers believe that love is more than a hormonal reaction.Once I started reading this story, I could not put it down! Daniel is a hopeless romantic, while Natasha is a pragmatic scientist. Their banter left me laughing and crying. I haven't read such a delightful love story in a long time.Nicola Yoon's refreshing writing style will enchant readers. And kudos to Yoon for opening her novel with a Carl Sagan quote. After posting this review, I will definitely re-listen to "Big Blue Dot."5/5 stars
It was between this book and #BadMan (ha!) and I’m glad I chose something a little lighterâï¸! Bright, breezy story about two high school students: a Jamaican girl on her last day in NYC before she and her immigrant family are deported; and a Korean boy on his way to an interview for the college of his parents’ dreams...the two spend the day together, she a realist, he a dreamer, and together teach each other a different way of looking at life ☀ï¸. I thought the teenage characters were believable and interesting and I loved the narrative structure told through different POVs and informative interstitials. It’s YA, but I think it’s a good recommendation for all audiences!
4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy YA and are looking for diverse representation in your reading.Natasha is being deported today. She's being deported because her father made a mistake. Because of his mistake, her future is ruined. Daniel is on the path that his parents want. Go to Yale, become a doctor, marry a nice Korean girl. Daniel would rather be a poet. He lets the wind blow him where it will before his interview for Yale. The wind blows him toward Natasha.Nicola Yoon. Gets me every time. Her books are light and fluffy, but they also carry deeper things beneath the surface. This book is more emotional and complex than Everything, Everything. The depiction of two children of immigrant parents is absolutely vivid and intricate. I love that this book is written from multiple perspectives, and as always with Nicola Yoon, the chapters are short and you just fly through it. I enjoyed reading from both Natasha and Daniel's perspectives, but I will say that I REALLY love teenage male protagonists. So much sarcasm! :P I also liked how this book contains segments about their parent's history, perspectives of people they interact with, etc. The way it's all woven together is really lovely. I cried a bit, and I felt happy and sad for all of the characters. It's just a really thoughtful portrayal of growing up, families, immigration, etc. etc. With the way it ends, I would love to read a follow-up. :) I hope that she writes more books soon! :)

From The New England Journal of Medicine
This book contains expert summaries of various aspects of plant-based, or meatless, diets. It provides not only ethical, moral, and religious viewpoints from different periods of history but also modern perspectives on health promotion and disease prevention. The editor, Joan Sabate, is a physician and nutrition specialist who for several decades has been a principal investigator in observational and intervention studies of health promotion among Seventh-Day Adventists. He has recruited an international group of authors and many of his colleagues at Loma Linda University for this collection. That the 26 contributors include only 2 physicians may indicate the need for this book, since the overall impression the book leaves is that vegetarian diets are safe, palatable, healthy, and at times curative. The material is presented succinctly, with good use of tables, and is referenced appropriately. Vegetarian diets may be classified as lacto-vegetarian, ovo-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or vegan, respectively, if they include dairy products, eggs, both dairy products and eggs, or no animal products at all. The macrobiotic diet is an extremely restrictive vegetarian diet that is not nutritionally adequate and leads to malnutrition, especially in children. The book's synopsis of growth studies involving children and adolescents who are vegetarians provides data on children from birth to 18 years of age. Lacto-ovo- or lacto-vegetarians, as most Seventh-Day Adventists are, have normal physical growth, whereas children who are vegans may have slower growth even if they are in good health. In a discussion of nutrients of concern in vegetarian diets, the authors conclude that appropriately planned vegan or lacto-ovo-vegetarian diets can be nutritionally adequate. There is concern about the adequacy of zinc intake in vegan women and about low intakes of vitamin B12 and iodine in vegans in general, but these needs can be met by fortified foods (such as breakfast cereal and salt). White and Asian vegan women may need to take calcium supplements in order to ensure that their intake is adequate, and those who live in northern climates may require vitamin D supplementation in winter, or year-round if they are elderly. Tables of health-promoting phytochemicals (beyond the traditional nutrients) provide information about the food and herbal sources of approximately 20 compounds, ranging from carotenoids to tocotrienols. The author of the chapter on phytochemicals recommends that whole foods rather than phytochemical supplements be consumed for the best protection against disease, since the safety and health benefits of concentrated extracts of fruits and vegetables with high levels of phytochemicals are unknown. The discussion of vegetarian diets in relation to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and disease-specific guidelines (for heart disease, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cancer) concludes that these recommendations promote the eating of more unrefined grains, fruits, and vegetables and the reduction of the intake of saturated fat and cholesterol (present in all animal products and in no plants) -- a diet that overlaps with vegetarian eating patterns. The author of the chapter on dietary guidelines concludes that ``present knowledge suggests that diets rich in plant foods with small or minimal amounts of animal foods may be the remedy for modern life-style diseases.'' Dietary guidelines for vegetarians could be developed with the aim of promoting the consumption of a variety and abundance of plant foods; primarily unrefined and minimally processed plant foods; optional dairy products, eggs, or both; and a generous amount of water and other fluids. The concluding chapters on the historical context of vegetarianism and its relation to religion and spirituality are intriguing and provide new insights. Although the term ``vegetarianism'' was coined in the mid-1800s, the practice of abstinence from eating meat dates back, in Western society, at least to Pythagoras in southern Italy in the 6th century b.c. and to Zoroaster in Persia and Daniel in Babylon in the 7th century b.c. Prominent advocates of vegetarianism in America were Sylvester Graham, the leader of a 19th-century religious movement that called for temperance and the reform of health and hygiene practices, and John Harvey Kellogg, a 20th-century Seventh-Day Adventist who was trained as a physician and operated a Seventh-Day Adventist Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan. He developed meat substitutes and other vegetarian health foods, including the breakfast cereals that have immortalized the family name worldwide. Elaine B. Chock full of scientific information of interest to vegetarians and vegans.
Most vegetarian advocates are prone to selective citation of the scientific literature, quoting those studies that support their ethical beliefs, but omitting mention of the science that is contradictory. Sabate's Vegetarian Nutrition does not do this, and is a fair review of the literature. Each area of concern is addressed with a complete review. Does eating meat cause disease or do other factors in the vegetarian lifestyle than abstention from meat confer health protection? Are vegetarians and vegans at greater risk for nutritional deficiencies? Sabate explores these and other questions with thoroughness and integrity.Paul Bergner, Adjunct Faculty in Nutrition, Naropa University

I'm starting law school in the fall so I've been reading up on what's in store for me. Acing was a great first read because it told me not only what's in store, but also how to approach it all. Chapter 2 was pretty cool because it showed how to brief a case and gave an example. Chapters 4 and 5, about legal citation and research, aren't really worth reading until you're actually at law school and have an assignment. Another thing I like about the book is that the authors try hard to ease anxiety that you feel as a 0L and will feel as a 1L. All in all the book is a really quick read and its information, while not going as in-depth as other books, was still great for someone who knew nothing at all.
I would put this book in the category of books that you buy because you're terrified of 1L and want to read everything you can get your hands on that might improve your chances of success.Would I read it again? Not really. Is it a decent book? Yes, it isn't bad by any means, but I can't point to anything that I felt improved my understanding of law school or improved by ability to do well on exams.
gave an account of the 1st year of college.. but it is an old copyright. This book focuses on the socratic method. I am going to attend a college that has a more realistic approach. However it was good, gave me a lot of information. I now understand what i didn't. I was hoping it would have scared me to not do this ... what am i crazy? (grin) ...I'm going for it, i think ... buy it used ... if you do. And it was beneficial.
ok
It helped some but not extremely necessary.
Good Product
Has some helpful ideas.
Great book, I think it really helped.

Review
"These poems of spiritual yearning and discovery composed by the young Rilke one hundred years ago feel very fresh and moving in the beautifully transparent, supple versions of Anita Barrows and Joanna Macy. With their psalm-like directness and emotional urgencyk, they nourish and quicken the life of the spirit." --Chana Bloch, translator of The Song of Songs

From the Back Cover
At the beginning of this century, a young German poet returned from a journey to Russia, where he had immersed himself in the spirituality he discovered there. He "received" a series of poems about which he did not speak for a long time - he considered them sacred, and different from anything else he ever had done and ever would do again. This poet saw the coming darkness of the century, and saw the struggle we would have in our relationship to the divine. The poet was Rainer Maria Rilke, and these love poems to God make up his Book of Hours.

These are some of Rilke's earlier works, and I have loved seeing the brilliant beginnings of his work through these poems. There is a necessary darkness in some, and then there are those with such illuminating insights I have to pause and ponder his words wanting them to sink deeply into my spirit. His mysticism is what draws me to him. As an artist and mystic poet myself, I appreciate all aspects of his process and revel in the beauty of his writing. This book is essential for those who seek a deeper understanding of Rilke's journey. Love Without Distance: A Heartscape of Art and Verse
I agree with K. Marsh's assessment. This alleged translation is a narcissistic, disrespectful, multi-ideological perversion of Rilke's poetry. Barrows & Macy employ Buddhism, feminism, and Deep Ecology (the adjective indicates ecology has been reframed) to reinterpret Rilke through their lenses. And they do so with pride in their Commentary section. I'll cite examples, but let me cut to the chase: You read this book knowing that at will they have deliberately rewritten or omitted lines, changed the order of lines, exchanged lines between poems, and merged poems to create a better single poem. And they rewrite the meaning of lines not as translation but to correct Rilke's thinking and his not quite ready for prime time ideas and render them into better Barrows & Macy concepts, or at least clarify for Rilke what he meant to or should have said. Imagine the audacity of this line, p. 243, "We omitted the last seven lines, which lost the thread of the preceding image and repeated the thought that is in I,4. After all, Rilke was writing these very quickly!" And, yes, he was. The first cycle of the Sonnets came quickly, in a week, as if he were taking dictation. Should we not preserve the precise, intact delivery from what he called his angel of inspiration??? So, they missed the whole point of the Sonnets, rendering their translation stillborn. On P. 251, we get "No, this not a mis-numbering. We have altered Rilke's ordering of the poems so as not to interrupt the sequence that immediately precedes and which seem all of a piece." Seems? Can we not respect Rilke's ordering? Might we allow his sequence to reveal itself, to break through your conceptual walls? And this travesty, p. 242, "Rilke wrote of the circles that they 'sich uber die Dinge aiehn,' literally 'draw themselves over the things.' Clearly what he intended was the things of this world (see the introduction)." They missed this about Rilke too: When asked to explain what he meant in a particular poem, he responded with, "Everything you need to explain the poem is in the poem." A critical humility is needed in translation, especially with Rilke's journeys into the mystery of existence. Barrows & Macy have that mystery figured out by their ideologies, and thus can correct Rilke's many forays into the multidimensionality of the great darkness. They get it right, as on: P. 248: "Taking our cue from line 7, we omitted the last two thirds of the poem." P. 249, "We have omitted two lines that didn't fit in the cup." Let me translate that one..."that didn't fit our cup of tea." On page 254, "We have combined most of 4 with the last lines of 5. The two themes of this book..." They made a new poem (goodbye nuance) by changing and mixing lines acceptable to them. We want what Rilke wrote. Let's get to the feminist ideology through gender modification (not legitimate and sacred feminism): In their first edition, they wrote, as I remember (I discarded that edition) words to the effect that they changed all of the offensive masculine pronouns--and thus history is revised by them. (Visionary that he was, I don't know if Rilke envisioned a pronoun war in the latter part of the 20th century.) And they try to soft peddle gender now by calling it, in an Orwellian term, deconstructing gender. The first volume also said that they spared the reader all of Rilke's images of pregnant men. How could you be a translator of poetry and not see a metaphor in front of you? That metaphor was one of the key ones in his poetry--that all life is gestation. All life is a becoming. And it's just elementary Joseph Campbell that metaphors point to something beyond concepts, that which is rendered by good Rilke translators as the "unsayable." In Letters to a Young Poet in his 20s, Rilke saw the age of feminine recognition and power coming, and said that relationships could become a kind of sacred friendship not sullied by masculine-feminine misconceptions. He knew that masculine and feminine were energies of beings not to be confused with physical sex organs. Anne Morrow Lindbergh in her Gift from the Sea saw Rilke's views on relationship as groundbreaking on masculine and feminine.Translators must have latitude to find accurate words moving from German to English to convey the essence of a poem, but when Barrows & Macy quote the literal translation and then say Rilke missed the mark and we know what it should be, it is outrageous. Again, it has to fit ideology, not the whispers of the angel in Rilke's ear. But they don't like metaphor anyway: P. 254, "We omitted the middle section of the poem, which employs a different metaphor." They're strict! Here's my problem with the Barrows & Macy translation: What the Commentary reveals that has been corrupted in the poems not only leaves such a bad taste in my mouth, but also does not allow me to read other poems without a haunting sensation that other lines and poems have been tampered with. How much sabotaging of Rilke's Book of Hours is not acknowledged? It is impossible to hold this book in my hands.
This is the best way into reading Rilke. The youthful freshness, the clarity of language and image, and the spiritual zeal expressed through a devotee-like persona, all are uplifting and hopeful.Too bad that his later verse leaves the divine in wrapped darkness and angst. He was oriented powerfully toward the divine, oh so powerfully, but could make no personal leap and therefore could make no spiritual claim on his readers. A modernist, finally, who gave us art while desiring so much more. The translations here bring this early poetry to life without wooden pedantry. It's all fresh and direct.
Rilke, in its original German text is inaccessible to most readers. Furthermore, I as a physician as well as most other people, do dot have time to take courses in German and literature to fully appreciate him in his original works. Furthermore, most literal translations tend to lose their poetic beauty. Just as I would not attempt to explain complicated medical issue in medical jargon, just to be precise, I do not expect the translators of Rilke be so literal that both the thoughts and beauty being expressed remain opaque to all but linguists and critics. Sometimes "Ivory Tower" critiques are useful to a limited few, ignoring the possibility that the many want to have access to these intelligent, beautiful, and sophisticated works. I thank the Macy's efforts not only to clearly express Rilke's thoughts and feelings, but also for the changes that morph the poems that change from literal silkworms hidden in cocoons of inaccessibility to beautiful poetic butterflies through the generous work of the Macy's efforts in their transmutation.
Rilke is the best. He has the perfect balance of God and nature and thought about God in a way that is fresh and unique even by today's standards. Reading this will always put me back in touch with my spirit.
Rilke's weaves words together into works of art. His poems offer much to think about long after the reading. The poems seem to increase in wisdom with each re-reading, as the reader grows more thoughtful.
Beautiful, beautiful poetry. Was it Rilke who originally said, "Poetry is the soul's natural prayer..." ? One of my favorite Rilke quotations is that we "must always be beginning..." I tell my students this and emphasize that we who are in fact poets and writers, must be especially aware of this. But isn't this also true of pray-ers and mystics?
This is a book of beatific poetry, beautifully translated, prefaced, introduced, annotated and with commentary by the two translators. The poetry is worth all their effort, and will provide many opportunities for joyful contemplation.

Book has beautiful illustrations, but I was very surprised by one of the pages. See attached pic. I’mnot ready to explain gay marriage to my 6 year old.
I gave this book to my grandchildren because I am a quilter, and love to bestow my quilts on those I love. I understand it's meaning and message, and hate to give it a bad review, but be warned. My grandchildren were in tears after the 2nd Grandma died. Not for sensitive children who love their grandmas.
The original version of this book is wonderful. It was a favorite read aloud story of my elementary students and myself for years. When I ordered copies of the 25th edition for my grandchildren I was not aware that the original was changed. I will not read this version to my grandchildren because of the ending.
my daughter in law who is having a baby is Jewish. i made a quilt for the baby and i tucked this book in with it. it was perfect accompaniment. the story is beautifully told...about family, traditions, and the circle of life. the quilt was made with clothing from the family members "basket of clothes". the quilt is then handed down through the generations...becoming a part of the important celebrations...from wedding canopies, to tablecloths for the sabbath dinner, to wrapping a new baby within it's love. the book was poignant...and i hope my quilt will be passed down through the generations as well as it surrounds her with love throughout the years..
Beautiful story of the love and traditions woven throughout a family's generations. This book is illustrated in a way that invites the reader into their family. What a wonderful book,,,a treasure!
This book inspired me to create a quilt for a friend's daughter whose wedding is in January. I have asked the members of her family and friends to contribute to the quilt and I have a friend who is a quilter. So, yes, I enjoyed this sweet little book.
Patricia Polacco is one of the greatest storytellers of our generation. She has put down snippets of not only her life, but of her ancestors, into delightful stories that transcends all age groups. THE KEEPING QUILT is about Polacco's Great-Grandmother Anna, who immigrated to New York City. The only two things that she still owned from her native Russia were her dress and a babushka. Anna's mother eventually takes parts of her dress and babushka along with old clothes belonging to other relatives and makes a quilt that will remind everyone of their homeland. This quilt serves as a source of comfort and memories for future generations. This is another book that I bought my daughter for her birthday. She will read this book to her second graders perhaps inspiring a new generation to write down the memories of the past.
The book was in good condition. The story is good, too. There four quilters in our family. My mother's quilts had stories in them. So I love the book.
