I'm not a child therapist or student of child development. I was looking for something with a little more meat than what's found in most parenting books, and this book delivered. I can understand almost everything and it offers terrific breakdowns of different areas of development at each stage, with quick snapshots. I'll be using the book frequently in the future when I have questions, concerns, or curiosities about my children's path to adulthood!
I brought this textbook as a requirement for one of my classes. The book is easy to read, comprehend and understand. It's one of those books that you don't need your professor to decipher for you. The text is factual and has good examples to help one understand the readings better. To my surprise I actually enjoy reading it.
I got this book as a required textbook for my class in a PhD program. The book has excellent case examples for each chapter (so far). The authors do a good job of integrating practice into an understanding of theoretical issues. I have had child development classes before, but I feel like I have a better understanding of child development with my current class and this textbook. The one criticism I have is that some of the literature mentioned in the book seems a little dated.All in all, a good book to begin a comprehensive understanding of child development and the issues to look out for at each stage. Incorporating practice with theoretical issues adds an extra dimension to the book.
I read this for a class in ocial work and wished I'd read it sooner. Great explanations and information, so helpful for a new parent or a clinician working with children or teens.

I have said it before but it deserves mentioning again, Harry have gone a far way from the somewhat wimpy character that he was in the first couple of books in this series. I am really glad that I hung on to The Dresden Files and did not give up on these books.The books starts of at full speed with a rather dramatic event. Not the major fight and action loaded event that many authors use in order to get things going, and which often can give the user a somewhat “what’s actually going on†feeling, but rather an event which drops the reader straight into the actual main story of the book. In addition it is an event which turns a few things on their head at the same time.Harry is still the same sharp tongued and cynical kick---s wizard as we have become used to in recent books. Jim Butcher have managed to get to a decent balance of Harry being somewhat outclassed on a regular basis but at the same time kicking some serious behinds, also on a regular basis.This is really a good book. It never really slows down to the extent that you find it boring but at the same time it is not just non-stop senseless action and throwing of fire bolts. It also moves the main story arc, that goes through the book series, forward quite a lot.The ending have quite a few tragic elements in it though. Some of the somewhat predictable, some not so and one I could really have been without. Actually the book ends in a rather dark tone. That still does not stop me from liking this book a lot. I hope the next ones is as good as this one.
I just love all the Harry Dresden books which is why I actually paid money to Amazon to receive this book. :). As a whole series, watching Harry grow from a gawky young man to adulthood while facing foes that many of us can only imagine was GREAT! Harry wasn't some kid who was magical and suddenly could do anything and save the world. He made a lot of mistakes along the way on his journey and saved a few lives while endangering others. His emotions were real and while they didn't always serve him the way he wanted, they did allow things to turn out (mostly) for the good. This was an incredible series of books and I will be sorry when the last one is out and I have to say goodbye to my friend Harry and the other characters I've grown to know and love.
When your most dogged detractor shows up at your door, half-dead, wrongfully accused, and asking for help, what would you do? If you’re Harry Dresden, you curse, take the poor bastard into your home, and you work his case. Turn Coat by Jim Butcher takes a few of the conventions used throughout the series and turns over on their ear, creating a tense who-done-it with style and sarcasm.To elaborate on the title of this review, the “Javert†archetype is named after the eponymous character from Les Miserables. A Javert-type character follows the letter of the law because he or she feels the law is the moral high ground. A Javert-type doesn’t question the law or those who decide what counts as the law. A Javert also does not believe in redemption; as Javert sings in the musical version of Les Miserables: “Once a thief, forever a thiefâ€.For Harry Dresden, Donald Morgan is his Javert. As part of Harry’s backstory way back in Storm Front, it was revealed that Harry had killed Justin DuMorne, his foster father and diabolical warlock, with magic, breaking the First Law of Magic. Dresden was given a reprieve and Morgan was assigned to watch Dresden to make sure the young wizard did not return to using black magic. To Harry’s chagrin in Dead Beat, he realized that Morgan didn’t have any personal animosity for Harry. Morgan was simply a burned-out cop (albeit a wizard cop) who’d seen too many warlocks who failed to reform.That prior antagonism gives Turn Coat a bitter sense of irony. The title of the novel refers to multiple physical and emotional turns in the series. The turn coat in the White Council is revealed and dealt with. Morgan turns a different page in his association with Harry. Someone close to Harry decides to turn from a noble path. It’s not a stretch to call this book’s climax a pyrrhic victory. The storyline’s resolved but everyone involved is left a little less whole than when the novel started.Turn Coat finds Jim Butcher fully in charge of his lead character. Dresden feels comfortable as a character and after 11 novels he’s not slipping into a state of rote inertia. This novel’s main plotline forces Harry to accept that doing the right thing doesn’t mean liking it or really achieving a meaningful victory. Sometimes it means letting an innocent man’s name be sullied and cursed so that the larger organization can survive. Butcher treads some troubling moral ground in Turn Coat, more so than he has in previous novels. All of the novels since Death Masks have presented muddier moral dilemmas for Harry to sift through. The obvious dilemma in Turn Coat is should Harry help someone who’s done nothing but torment him over the years. The other dilemma deals with the traitor in the White Council and how justice is meted out. An observation is made that bureaucracies care more about efficiency than justice. As Harry discovers to his disappointment, for bureaucracies it’s more important to appear strong and unjust rather than weak and just.Harry is at his most heroic and snarky here. Lasciel’s loss has passed from his mind and he’s returned to his usual acerbic self. The line “Wile E. Coyote, Suuuper Genius†had me rolling with laughter. Those moments of levity are needed for Harry and the reader both. Turn Coat brings Harry to the realization that the institutions he has served may not be worth saving.Harry’s supporting cast turns in well-rounded appearances. Thomas continues evolving as a character, straddling the line between monster and man (much like his younger brother). Molly and Mouse both have interesting arcs in this novel, with Molly skirting the darkness she first experienced in Proven Guilty and Mouse serving as a woolly dogasaurus referee. Turn Coat continues revealing tidbits about what Mouse is and what his capabilities are. And there is Karrin Murphy, Dresden’s closest ally. From at least Blood Rites forward, Dresden and Murphy have circled each other romantically, slowly picking away at all the reasons they shouldn’t become involved. It’s what two proud people do when their emotions tell them something their intellects think is a bad idea.I’ve yet to come across a Dresden book I dislike. Jim Butcher continues writing intriguing stories that simply beg to be experienced. Now that I’ve read Turn Coat, I realize that I’m reaching the halfway point of the series. All the best stories, the ones that settle in your mind, have an end. Turn Coat is a great standalone story but it also moves the meta-arc forward with tragic, violent motion. Sudden turbulent change is ahead, and just like in real life, that means more good people will simply be bodies on the floor.

It took me a long time to write this review, because I honestly struggle putting into words how much this book fundamentally changed the way I go about writing not just features, but any piece of news. I'm still a relatively green reporter, having been in the business for just under two years, and I picked up this book hoping to find some techniques to improve my (admittedly lacking) feature-writing skills. The writing advice offered by Blundell is good and practical, but where this book really shines is in describing how a feature should be structured and the mix of elements it should contain. I now keep a printout of Blundell's six elements - history, scope, reasons, impact, countermoves, and futures - in a file in my desk, and often consult it when I'm starting work on a new story. I've yet to read a better instructional book on news writing.
An excellent, thorough guide to researching and writing the feature print article. Although the advice in this helpful volume applies to both employees and free-lancers, there is less on marketing the piece than the craft of writing.
Blundell writes so engagingly that you don't even realize he's taking your feature writing to a whole new level. Written in the 80's, it's still a classic and we used it as a text for my university Publishing class. Best advice on craft I've ever read.
High quality "how to" on reporting and feature writing. An excellent gift for the budding (or struggling) journalist. Somewhat less useful for non-journalists seeking to blog or to write op-ed pieces.
There is a voice in this book, and you can just HEAR this guy as he admonishes writers and drills into their heads the step-by step guide to reporting and writing. The tone is firm with a direct approach to feature writing as the author is adamant that, "reporting and writing can NOT be divorced."I like the sharp conversational tone; it's like sitting in the classroom. He is very clever with the similes and metaphors to clearly drive his point.Although this book has made the rounds for years, Blundell offers refreshing ideas and unique insight to writing. He speaks of experience as a Wall Street Journal writer. This is HIS voice, and not a slew of other professional writers churning out a how to book.I like a quote of his when he tells us that the READER requires specific information and our first priority is to meet that requirement and also that the reader has a deeper and more universal need that has to be met or, he flees. The author said, "nothing is easier than to stop reading."You won't find the usual writing book addressing topics like these. A sample chapter is Raw Materials - generating ideas; Extrapolation (beyond the event lies a broader, more significant story); Synthesis (assembling promising story ideas from what looks like a junkpile of spare parts); Localization (thinking big); Projection (declining to follow the media sheep to a pasture already overgrazed) and Viewpoint Switching (thinking of a story as a piece of terrain with varying topography).Also topics titled Shaping Ideas; Story Dimensions, Planning and Execution, Organization, and you get great insight into Handling Key Story Elements that delves into the dreaded leads and endings.What is interesting in a unique approach to his section titled Wordcraft. He assumes that you the reader already know grammar, syntax and usage. So his goal is to show us how to achieve certain effects at certain places in the story.You will read some full texts on sample stories that are sprinkled throughout the chapters. Blundell also provides reading material for the writer. He says, "whole forests have died to fill the marketplace with other writing books." One suggestion is Zissner's "On Writing Well."This is a unique writing book and is meant to read completely. ....Rizzo

The reviewer from Laguna Niguel who says this book is boring apparently has been reading too many textbooks and therefore is only used to reading textbooks. Yes, the examples in this book are out of date, but so what? The full-text examples are still excellent articles after 15 years or so; great writing is always great writing even after it goes from being current events to being history. In 1984, I saw the transcript of Blundell's lectures on feature writing that became the basis for this book, and I still use this book in teaching my feature writing course and my magazine writing course, because nothing else comes close. Among many other accomplishments, this book gives students a SYSTEM for coming up with original story ideas and original story angles that most of them couldn't come up with on their own--in direct contrast to other books that use poetry or other gimmicks to try to make students "feel creative" and then be creative. Rather than being read once or not at all and/or being used only for reference, this is a book that should be read over and over again.
I haven't wanted to put it down, wish I had time to read in one or two sittings. The book has given me a lot of useful ideas that, if I use even some of the tips, will result in improvements to my writing. It was recommended to me by the editor of the paper I freelance for. He used it several years ago as a textbook in a college journalism class he taught.

Easy to make, great directions and wonderful flavor. My mother and I have gone back and forth with meal delivery kits looking for something delicious and different. This book delivers at a fraction of the price of one week of any plan. The flavor is excellent and the fact that it is Keto home run! If you buy one cookbook buy this one.
We haven't yet tried the recipes, but they appear to be good. The time-saving aspect, however, misses the boat.The book has no index, and, since items in the table of contents are not alphabetized, it takes a while to locate a food item listed in the two-week plan even after you figure out which section of the book the item is in. For example, try finding a grilled cheese sandwich.To be really time saving, the two-week plan should list carbs, fat, protein & calories for each food item and for the day total right below the individual items in the plan. This is important because, on 1700 calories a day, I would gain weight, and my husband would lose weight (which he cannot afford to do). To adapt the meal plan to our needs, I would have to put in 4-5 hours looking up and writing out macro counts for each of the 54 food items in the small boxes of the chart. Making an index in a single alphabet is just too much work.A good, time saving keto cookbook book would include a single alphabetized index, and macro counts for carbs, fats, protein & calories for each item written right on the 2-week plan.Another thing that I would love to have which I rarely find in keto cookbooks is the weight of individual servings. Not having the total weight or serving size weight, I have to weigh pots of cooked food in order to determine the weight of a single portion. We often forget to do this and then have to guess. Color pictures at least at the beginning of each section would also be an appealing addition.I hope you consider writing another edition of this book, since you are on the right track. I would definitely purchase an updated version if these things were included since having a an easily adaptable 2-week meal plan save would save us an immense amount of time.
I love that all of these recipes are keto friendly and require 5 or less ingredients. Everything seems pretty simple to make. I would have given it 5 stars except that it didn't have many pictures at all of the food which I would've found helpful. But overall, very good cookbook.

Love this book! Been wanting a book on Chesapeake Bay Retrievers since I love in Maryland and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are the state dog, I wanted to learn more about the breed. This book has helped.
Great book for our new Chesapeake puppy...needed easy to read tips on how to train. Especially helpful for puppy biting of our hands, lease training and other basic training methods. Enjoyed this book and have referred back to as needed. I bought the used one as it was for me and not a gift...great price. I do recommend this easy to use "owner manual".
If you just got a Chesapeake, this is a perfect starter book. Although it doesn't cover any one topic in great detail, it does cover most topics a new dog owner would want to know. Everything from grooming, feeding and behavior, it's all there. Good luck with your pup.

In the end I have found that success came with simplicity. Look for the big picture in the book and any other. Growing wealth is like growing a big tree, strong trees grow big over a long time.
Basic principles of this book are decent, however, the principles are not gold and it could be summed up well in 50 pages or less...not the redundant, ranting 300 page book it is.First 80 pages of the book are worthless and torture mostly focusing on the consumerism/doomed/horrible smog-infested society we live in, last two chapters most useful and can be read in a bookstore.I did not like many examples given; it seemed to focus on divorce excessively with ~ 80% of case report examples of "FI-ers" being divorced which I found rather odd and unnecessary to mention.Take home points of this book: Spend less than you earn, save, document every penny you spend, become a minimalist and only purchase things you need, the less you need the more fulfilled you will be, the less you will work, etc.Things to consider:1) The "FIer" lifestyle is not for everyone- I equate an "FIer" to the tiny home movement in principle.2) Book recommends that bonds should be the mainstay and the only thing in your portfolio. I strongly would discourage this. "Safe" bonds which I pretty much consider anything that that is not a junk bond or preferred stock bond, are not hitting the high yields that Joe Dominguez saw in his day and on many years aren't comparing to rises in inflation. While you can never predict the stock market, when looking at time tables- it always goes up. Traditionally, stock markets rise while bond yields go down some and visa versa. The best way for security and safety is proper allocation to each of these modalities: bonds (treasury bonds are great as mentioned in the book because you aren't charged state taxes, however, what the book fails to remind you of is that federal taxes are still fair game) and diversified stock portfolio most safely done by investing in mutual index funds with low fees (e.g. Vanguard). The older you are, for safety, the more bonds you should have in case the stock market plummets during your retirement years. For conservatives a 60% mutual funds and 40% bonds is recommended. For a retirement person, 20% stocks and 80% bonds should be considered. When you have all your eggs in one basket, you lose that safety net.3) Other things I disagree with in this book- everyone should have health insurance, you should not forgo this to "save" money; sure buy the less comprehensive plan if you are healthy and pay less and have a higher deductible but you are gambling when you forgo it all together.4) They also suggest in this book "rolling-over" your 401k and 403b accounts to bonds; however, these are pre-taxed dollars and you will likely get slammed- most retirement plans now give options to the "risk" or rather stock/bond ratio you desire. I would more likely suggest rolling money to Roth IRAs (post-tax and therefore tax free with capital gains) or just leave your nest egg to compound growth where they are at.Now I am ranting. Cheers.
The first 8 chapters of the book are great, chapter 9 should just be deleted. The original book recommended putting 100% in Treasuries. Since that is clearly a terrible idea now, the book grudgingly recommends index funds.The thing that drives me nuts is the book says that it took 25 years for the stock market to recover from the Great Depression. This is a lie, when you account for dividends and deflation it took 4.5 years to recover if you put a lump sum in at the absolute peak.If you’re going to try and scare people at least be honest. Also if you’re going to pretend that 100% treasuries was a great idea in the 80s at least mention that a 60/40 stock bond blend would have blown it out of the water.
As a Certified Financial Planner professional with over ten years of experience helping clients with retirement planning, I'm sincerely impressed by this book, and have to say that this is a powerful resource for anyone that is seriously interested in becoming Financially Independent (FI). My only feedback is that the book, doesn't emphasize enough, how difficult it is, when you have a spouse or life partner, to change deeply rooted financial money scripts and behaviors. That said, if you (and your life partner) are dedicated to Financial Independence, then this read, is in my professional opinion, a very worthy investment of "life energy" in deed. The content is good, but it is written as if someone just dictated a seminar that lasted a week. It is full of "take Mary for example, she did blah blah blah and blah blah happened" followed by 3 more examples. Yea, I get it. I got it before the example and now I am just annoyed skimming past the examples thinking about the trees that were killed for no reason. Overall, there is some good content in the book, but it could have been cut down 25% easily. After reading the first half of the book I learned to just skip over the examples and skim some of the paragraphs to keep my sanity to make it through to the end
This is the perfect finance book for someone who is now starting out and really for anyone that is trying to get a different perspective on money and how they handle it.However there are some flaws with it number one being that I don’t believe that financial independence or the crossover point as it is called in the book is that easy to maintain once it is reached as several of the examples in the book spoke of people having to readjust their lifestyle when life changed which is something that we all know will happen.Overall however I think tracking your money, seeing your money as your life energy, tracking your income versus expenses for a long period of time and using the three questions to see if you’re getting the best value both emotionally and in line with your values is excellent advice so I would recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationship with money.
