Here's a great tutorial style book for those interested in digital painting. Fantasy Workshop is a compilation of tutorials that have been published in monthly ImagineFX issues. If you are already a regular subscriber, you'll see very similar tutorials in Fantasy Workshop.The tutorials are split into three categories, namely Characters, Scenes & Stories and Manga. At the end is a short FXpose section, which like the magazine, features illustrations from individual artists.The tutorials are presented in a step-by-step manner with plenty of screenshots and well explained captions. Each artist will talk about their workflow, tips, techniques and shortcuts to creating digital art. More specifically for example, they will talk about how they create realism through texture, and also why they created it that way.Since the book is about mastering digital painting, you'll see tons of examples on how to recreate paint effects using software. By examples I mean they will show the digital tools used, menus, and settings. The software used are Painter and Photoshop but the art techniques are usually easily achievable in either software.There are also a few pages where the artists answer fans' questions relating to creating art.This is a recommended book for anyone into digital painting. I am a little disappointed with this book. It is not terrible, but it is not loaded with hands on instruction or technique either. What it is is a bunch of reprints of "tutorials" previously found in the Imagine FX magazine. Sometimes these tutorials refer you to a CD, published with the magazines, but not included with this book. Not such a bad thing really, however, it is the lack of real "instruction" thats the issue. Mostly this book is just a bunch of artists talking in vague terms about how they accomplished a project. More detailed explanation would have been nice. Its really not much of a workshop at all. However, there are some gems in here, and some great artwork that can be inspiring, but for someone looking to break into digital painting/rendering . . . well, I'd still say this is a worthy purchase, but it won't live up to its claim of "Mastering Digital Painting Techniques." (I know, I know. Only time and skill will accomplish this. But they do claim it in the title. ;) ) However, for the price, it is still a nice to have. I personally found other books more informative, such as Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results
This book is okay I would say... not a very interesting read but in the end it still is informative. Also they use different artists to explain certain subjects which is refreshing but also may not apply depending on their style, which makes total sense. I would recommend this book in the end and I got a great deal for it.
This book is well worth the price, especially considering it is a compilation of some of the best articles from the very expensive ImagineFX magazine. The range of artistic styles are broad, and I've found that even the workshops containing artwork that didn't depict my specific style had wonderful tips that have helped me nonetheless. The first time I started reading it, I couldn't put it down for hours. I then went to the ImagineFX site, to realize just what a great resource it is and how many great articles they've produced over the past few years.Please keep in mind though, that you must know at least the fundamentals of drawing or painting (traditional or digital) in order to make good use of this book. You won't be able to draw or paint a figure any better than before if you don't understand anatomy and composition, but if you have a decent understanding (and there are plenty of other books and resources out there to help you with that), this will complement your skills greatly and take them to the next level.
This book is not for beginners. It is best suited to those who already have a fair degree of mastery in Adobe Photoshop and want to gain new ideas and techniques from established masters in digital painting, in fantasy, science fiction and even advanced Manga artforms.The book is written in separate "chapters", each written by a different digital artist and following the creation of a piece of digital art from start to finish. I found the creative ideas of each piece inspiring and techniques used to create them extremely useful. In my view, the best way to use the book is to flick through it, find the project that best approximates to the image or effect you want to create and then follow the well-illustrated, step-by-step guide to how that piece of digital art was done.I found it good value for money and a source of inspiration and assistance that I keep close at hand for my own work.
