About the Author
I was born in Paris, France. Thanks to an open minded family, I attended school in Paris, London, Barcelona, and several cities in Germany. I hold degrees in modern languages and international business. A couple of years after college, I did the best thing a young person can do to widen his or her horizons and gain an understanding of our world and its wonderful diversity: I set out on a 20 month trip around the world, photographing extensively. From 1976 1981, I lived in Tokyo, becoming a permanent resident of Japan and teaching at Sophia University. During this time, I also worked as a freelance photographer and pursued my research on the origins of Sumo and its ties with the Shinto religion, resulting in Sumo Le Sport & le Sacré, published in 1984. My years in Japan have had a profound influence on my life, my philosophy, and my photography. I immigrated to the United States in 1982, settling on Southern California to create Graphie Int l, Inc. a firm specializing in software rights acquisition, as well as creation and management of corporate subsidiaries of European firms. Constant exploration and photography of the Southwest resulted in the publication of Land of the Canyons in 1998. In 1999, I permanently switched the company's focus to book publishing under the PhotoTripUSA Publishing imprint, spending a great deal of my time on the road writing and photographing my award-winning Photographing the Southwest series. In addition to my duties overseeing the publishing of new award-winning books and authors, I do a fair amount of world travel and sell my photography at a limited number of high-end art festivals, where I greatly enjoy interacting with patrons. The author provides detailed descriptions of photo-worthy sites, including how to get there, best time of day, ease/difficulty of access, best equipment to use, permits/permission required, and much more. Just buy it! I also ordered Vol. 1 - southern Utah.
I purchased Photographing the Southwest, Volumes 1,2, and 3 for our RV trip to the Southwest so will leave this review for all three books for anyone considering purchasing one of them. I rarely leave reviews but these books deserve reviews. I am an amateur photographer hoping to improve and travel with my husband in a 24-foot RV. Although I buy lots of travel guides for my Kindle when we travel, these guides were the best. Although not intended as travel guides necessarily, they were the best at providing us with detailed descriptions of the most interesting and beautiful natural places to go. On top of that, they provided great photography advice and, important for us, detailed information on how to get to each place, including information on how difficult it would be, such as dirt roads, so we could decide if our RV would make it or not. (There is even a chart in the back of each book that summarizes interest value, difficulty of access, etc.) I cannot overstate how much I love these books. They really are brilliant. My only disappointment is that the author has not done books for the entire country!
For those like me who enjoy hiking and taking landscape photographs, this book and the other that covers Utah is all you need to explore locations seen by few. If only I can give it 10 stars. . . . . .
Excellent book with allot of great locations. The reason for the 4 star is the direction for the hikes are sometimes difficult to follow. Good for locations but need to do more research to hike etc.
This is the revised edition and has updated information that is very helpful when you journey across Arizona. Very helpful location, lighting and researched landscapes. The photos are well done and have inspired me to go to these places and have not been disappointed at all.
Well-written description of best points of interest for photography. Even includes best times of day for photography and useful travel info. The images included in the guide demonstrate it is written by a reliable authority in photography. Good for trip planning and I will be using this guide on a photo excursion to Arizona next month.
The photographs and suggestions for different locales to shoot are awesome. This is the real thing.

This book is about those paths, and how to find your own."Unless you understand, in a deep sense composition, and, of course the camera's settings in a creative way, this book is not for you. If you are an experienced "expert", then this book could be for you - - - a way out of the usual into the truly creative world. A great photographer's book should contain great photos as examples, and this book does. Truly superlative work from , Michael Freedman himself and Richard Avedon. Art Kane, Paul Strand, Trent Parke, Ernst Haas, . . and many more.Like all of Freedman's 104 books, his beautiful and concise words convey deep messages that can be acted upon when you next pickup your camera. But I would recommend that you re-read the words at least 3 times and view the illustrative images many times because the messages they convey are subtle and very deep.
If you're looking for one of those hardcore how to books that lists the specs like ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc. this probably isn't the book for you. It's more a photographers distillation of how to think about things different to go beyond the usual to something a bit more creative. I enjoyed looking at the pictures and reading the thoughts of Michael Freeman. It gives you a glimpse into how a photographer thinks to get that extra something into a shot.
Beautiful layout presenting excellent and easily accessible information (suggestions). This volume serves as a ready reference for any level photographer wanting/needing a jog to their creative genius. Highly recommended.

I’m not generally drawn to list books: 50 of these or 100 ways, and so on. And books purporting to be about creativity or to teach one to see creatively? All with which I am familiar border on the trivial, or at least elementary, including the currently reigning volume.So, what could a book of fifty “paths†do to help photographers enlarge their creative propensities? Could this actually be a successful, informative, useful book? The short answer is, "Yes."Firstly, Michael Freeman is the photographer most able to articulate in both objective and subjective terms what goes on in a practiced photographer’s head writing today, or, perhaps ever. Secondly, the book turns out to be a useful appendix volume to his outstanding series of “The Photographer’s …†volumes, the first being a top best seller: “The Photographer’s Eye.†Thirdly, it is just plain intelligent in looking at his approaches to thinking about images.While this book can be at least as useful to a new photographer as the other creativity volumes out there, one will more deeply appreciate it with some years of experiences shooting and thinking about photography in many aspects and about images. Each section looks at images from a particular point of view, but, unlike most elementary books, Freeman has an essay that may go anywhere in his dealing with the topic.In many sections he pulls images from other top photographers’ bodies of work and uses their words to build his own argument on ways to consider the creative possibilities: Ernst Haas, Alex Webb, Pablo Inirio, to name three out of the twenty three. His essays often incorporate references to literature, music, philosophy, aesthetics, and other areas of creativity and thinking about it. One link to these other areas I’m sorry he didn’t mention is synesthesia, that some artists claim has been important to their visual work. Wassily Kandinsky said that in his mind colors and shapes were inseparable from music; Bill Allard has the same link between music and the image. I suspect that some few of us have a prewired edge on at least some aspects of creative activity with synesthesia.With or without it, though, Freeman’s text is a paean to literacy across all of the liberal arts fields as being a reservoir for inspirations for photographic creativity. Evocations in one’s imagination, the flow and rhythm of words in prose and poetry, and so on. Ernst Haas considered his photography a poetic, spiritual endeavor. Too, deep, real creativity comes from intimate, masterful knowledge of the history and craft of one’s field, and photography is no different. The master painters’ geometric techniques to evoke the finest nuances of harmonious space management in their visual works, while difficult to reproduce in small format photography, are a useful set of organizing sensibilities behind the viewfinder. Freeman uncovered the most delightful tidbit on the origin of that most hackneyed, trivial, and nearly useless of all photographic rules of composition, The Rule of Thirds; for that answer, one must read the book! (The answer is actually rather early.)Freeman assumes that a photographer reading this book has already mastered awareness of the elements of design, the fundamental and color contrasts, camera and technique, and the fundamentals of image composition, the topics which tend to be covered in the more elementary books. The fifty ‘paths’ are each four to six pages and are not overtly grouped, but there is some flow to them that results in some two or three in sequence being related. Freeman cross references other paths that are related in the texts. One compositional technique losing favor owing to the preponderance of small to tiny sensors, most numerously in smart phones, is controlling depth-of-field, which tends toward infinite despite the aperture, the smaller the sensor.This book is useful to any level of photographer, but most useful to the experienced one - especially one who has availed one’s self of his “The Photographer’s …†series, and/or Harald Mante and other authors on design, such as Maitland Graves. It is a wonderful place to look for something new or untried during those times when one is in a creative slump or is searching for inspiration to solve a photographic problem. Freeman is the only writer/photographer today who writes articulately at the advanced level, giving the experienced photographer, amateur or professional, useful, productive avenues to consider the photographic endeavor in ways not covered anywhere else.This book does succeed, is rewarding, and worth buying.

This book may not be required (it wasnt for our neuro labs in medical school but highly recommended by the instructors) but it is a great atlas that reviews practically everything that you would need to know. The best assets of this atlas are the coronal and horizontal section pictures which are of great quality and its pal-weigert stains which as a medical student i will attest that it is rough to learn. This books helped a ton and I did very well. It is also a great tool to use to review pathways as it devotes pages just to pathways as well. The glossy high quality paper and images makes it very useful in a wet lab such as a neuro lab working with brains but I wouldnt reuse it after and so i bought a second just for my studies while the other stayed in the lab. Even though neurology is one of my favorite areas it gets tough and the mri, ct and all sorts of images really help. I cannot recommend this book enough even if you feel like it is too much i guarantee that you will use it more than any neuro text that would be required. I used this along with BRS neuroanatomy (which lacks images besides basic ones) and I soared through neuro and neuro labs. do yourself a favor and at least by a used copy, if even as an adjunct to wet lab.
This atlas has netted me some points on my exams, so I have to give it praise. I was scared about the black-and-white issue that people were talking about, but this book does have SOME color, just not on most of the cross sections. The tracts are indeed hard to follow, but once you figure out how to actually read the tracts, you're off to the races and this atlas helps you understand the amount of ridiculous detail needed to ace medical school exams (e.g., know the positions of the tracts at different levels of the spinal cord in cross section, in relation to one another, how they are topographically arranged, and the arteries that supply those areas)Although the structures are heavily abbreviated in the tract diagrams, I find it is very helpful in testing your knowledge; you will know that you have studied enough when you don't need to look at the legend. Giving away the structure names may encourage passive learning anywho! Best of luck! I haven't used any other atlas, so I can't comment on that. Works well for me.
This was a great atlas for the lab component of my medical neuroscience course. It did in fact contain good images that "stepped through" the brain in different sections. Overall, it was very useful.My complaints include the lack of color (not that the actual brain is very colorful, but a black and white image is a far cry from an actual section), the thickness of cuts (i.e., I would have liked to see thinner slices such that you have more sections per "step through" of the brain), and the mediocre quality of drawings (e.g., in the spinal cord section).
This book is quite distinct from other books we used for neurology.Many of the images from this book are not schematics; rather, it uses real MRI or histological sections.In addition, it has some very good schematic diagrams as well.I found the coronal and horizontal sections to be especially useful, because they come with the real images + real images schematized with lines.They also provide an online website code in the book, which allows you to look at everything in the book on the website.This is especially useful for the sake of compiling notes on your computer... I would imagine that professors teaching neuroanatomy would find these images very useful as well.
I bought this as a Kindle Book, which seemed great initially. For reading it is pretty easy - although I have been unable to change the highlight colors and the search function is really slow compared to iBooks and Adobe apps. Often my professors refer us to specific pages to read and in the kindle version I cannot look up those pages, which makes groups a little tough at times. (In the Netter iPad app, which I realize is not an e-book, the images are still labeled by the textbook pages. This was my first "ebook", so maybe it skewed my expectations.)People love this book, but I am not impressed yet. The images are nice, but finding information in the text is a challenge. Even using the index, which is not great, I often spend several minutes to find one structure or concept. I thought that the search function would deal with this, but it often brings back limited results and they are text only. Perhaps I just need to own this book for more than a few weeks...Overall, I would caution a buyer about buying this atlas as an ebook. Try to find a friend who already has it and try to use it.
This book was very helpful to me in learning all the complicated neural tracts. Very detailed and the multi-colored lines helped visually. I used it in med school but my bf, who was in his 5/6/7th year of neurosurgery residency at the time, was still referencing it so, it obviously was very helpful for more advanced neuroanatomy review purposes.
I bought this thinking it would help my understanding of neuroanatomy or at least help with some of the pictures, but it's just okay. It's very cluttered and it seems like they just crammed as much info in there as they could. The pictures are okay.. The drawn pictures are standard (chicken scratch compared to Netter) with colors that remind me of faded curtains in a house from the 60s. I will say some of the real sections compared with drawings are actually pretty good; it's really the only good quality of the book.
I like the book. It is simple, but in neuro/addictions I was only able to rent a PDF and no hardcopy. Compared to $$$$, I have been collecting basic texts for the same thing combined for $.

I recently had an ergonomic assessment completed at work and they gave me a handout with computer desk stretches that I really enjoyed doing. I noticed the stretches were copied from a page out of Bob Anderson's Stretching book and decided to look it up. Amazon recommended this book to me as well and I immediately jumped on it. Yes these stretches are basic and you could probably do them without the book, but having a tool like this to help guide you through the stretches is really helpful. It gives you stretching routines and when to do them throughout the day. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and plan to use it daily. If you have a desk job this is an absolute must! :)
Good reminders to keep stretching! Sitting all day is so bad for my body and the book reminds me to get up and stretch.
Just get the larger Stretching book. This is just a smaller version with fewer stretches.
This is nice book to have around! This really help when you need to show a client what they can do to help themselves. I use this whenever I need to show someone what they can do to help themselves it is also nice to have visuals to help them out. I think that you need permission from the Author to print things. It have nice images as well as showing where the stretch is going to work and what muscles it helps with.
Like most people who are into physical fitness I had read Bob Anderson’s classic book on stretching many years ago. Now that I am at an advanced age with some medical issues and cannot do many of the standing stretches (except in the pool) and decided to purchase this excellent 101 page soft cover (Stretching in the office by Bob Anderson, illustrated by Jean Anderson) book.The introduction covers computer and desk problems, when to stretch, where to stretch, benefits of stretching, how to stretch and go by the feel. There are numerous stretching routines in this fully illustrated book. Almost all of them can be done in an office setting whether standing or seated. Some of these routines include: good morning (startup) stretches, neck and shoulder movements, lower back stretches, stressed out stretches, spontaneous stretches, on the phone stretches, sitting and standing stretches. There is also a section on stretches and movements for repetitive strain injuries. The hand, arm, shoulder and neck stretches are excellent. There is also a section explaining in detail how to do each of the stretches. The end of the book has a section on using the stretch ware material.This is a book for anyone who works at a desk or has physical limitations but desires to achieve more flexibility and just feel better. The illustrations are beautifully drawn and easy to follow. This book along with Bob Anderson’s original book on stretching is in my opinion the best books around on the importance of stretching. These books are the most useful I have found for stretches that make all the difference in joint health. This one is smaller and easy to keep around at the office for ideas on how to use small amounts of time to stretch or how to give relief to a particularly troublesome area which is aching. So easy to find the right exercise or set of exercises.
My 6'8" son is at a desk all day which--even modified for his height--creates stress on his spine so when a fitness friend specifically recommended Anderson's books, I ordered this one on Amazon and gave it to him for Christmas. The exercises are easy, diverse and can be done without being distracting. In fact I ordered Stretching for my daughter and Stretching for 50+ for me, too. All arrived on time and in mint condition. Would recommend all three books.
Great book! Well organized with pics and instructions on how to perform each exercise. In addition, there's a 2 page "index of exercises" with pictures, that you can tear out or copy and use it in the office (or whereever) without taking the whole book with you.

In recent years, however, America seems increasingly aware of those who defy such easy categorization. Yet, rather than being welcomed for the challenges they offer, people "living the gap" are often stigmatized by all the communities to which they might belong. These hybrids befuddle courts because existing classifications do not fit them. Ruth Colker here argues that our bipolar classification system obscures a genuine understanding of the very nature of subordination. By rejecting conventional bipolar categories, we can broaden our understanding of sexuality, gender race, and disability. Professor Colker is a bisexual woman with a wandering eye. Being not-quite lesbian, and not-quite disabled has pushed her to ask questions about the murkiness of categorization. In this book, she dedicates a chapter to the "bi's" of race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. This is mainly a legal text, but I think non-legal readers will still be entertained. I wasn't bowled over by this book, but I think it is great that someone is speaking of multiracials and bisexuals in the same breath and looking at the grey areas across categories. This book is a must have for various "bi" activists.
