This book was a joy! I enjoyed the history lesson (the colonial period was particularly sad because of the evil in man's hearts). If you want to know why a lot of Africa's presidents act the way they do, read this book. It's sad that the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree in a lot of cases. Many of the African presidents we consider corrupt and inept are imitating behaviors and mindsets they saw in "white" colonial overlords. The continent has suffered and continues to suffer because of injustice, greed and lack imagination & love. The hero of the story is John Githongo. He's imperfect but in the face of government wrongdoing he became the face of integrity. He saw tribalism's limits and thought more on a nationally level; right was right and wrong was wrong. Tribalism is detrimental to Africa as racism is detrimental to America. I definitely recommend it, though it could negatively cloud your judgment of NGOs and their government partners. One last thing: As I read this book I realized this: things are the way they are because someone wanted it to be that way. There are no mistakes, or loopholes.

I'm a Kenyan and i can personally attest to the devastating effects of grand pilferage of public resources as clearly brought out in this masterpiece.The author clearly took her time researching on cold facts that are easily verifiable and locally relatable. What is utterly shocking is how coldly calculated,planned and organised these heists are.This book deserves to be studied by any serious Kenyan or anyone interested in knowing why Africa is " a scar on the conscience of the world ", in the words of former Britain Prime Minister Tony Blair. Corruption and negative ethnicity have and will continue to hold the Kenya and the entire continent hostage unless we the electorate rise up and elect leaders of prosperity and not leaders of poverty. Africa is so resourceful but unfortunately for one reason or another , we have allowed ourselves to be played time and time again by fraudsters we call our leaders who have continued pauperizing us since independence and continue to without a care in the world and when election time comes, they play a con game and make use of divide and rule stratagems and tactics based on useless ethnicity and tribalism to blind and deceive the electorate on the real truth that in Kenya it is really is not a matter of " 42 or so warring tribes" but a seemingly underground perpetual power struggle by a minuscule clique of unscrupulous and ruthless power brokers battling it out to grab as much public resources as possible when in the highest office of the land.The only real tribes are the poor and rich period ! I thank God for the internet otherwise this book would not have seen the light of day especially in my country Kenya. Kudos Michela !
This book is mostly about John Githongo, an idealistic man who is given the job of rooting out corruption in Kenya following the 2002 elections. Since the end of colonial rule only two men had held the Presidency of Kenya: Kenyetta and Moi. During their corrupt regimes tribal loyalties had led to corruption, to the ruling class enriching themselves at the cost of their country. The NARC regime just elected to office promised to step away from the past; under President Kibaki Kenya would move away from the old ways.Or would it? Githongo, personally appointed by Kibaki, found corruption and took steps to deal with it. However, he discovered that corruption went all the way to the top levels of the government. The story of how John Githongo uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars in fraud and lived to tell about it is fascinating. Even more eye-opening was the way in which foreign aid was handed to Kenya despite the corruption. This is a long-term problem: so long as foreign aid props up these regimes they will continue to exist, skimming off American and European tax money so that the Minister of the Interior can buy a gold-plated Mercedes Benz and Presidents-for-Life can import Saville Row suits, French champagne and Russian caviar.The only issue I had with this book but was an attempt to smear George W. Bush as being somehow responsible for corruption in Kenya when the book itself discusses steps taken by members of his administration to hold the government accountable. I'm sure it made this book trendy when it came out, but now just makes it look silly.

I have read this mystery innumerable times and still enjoy it. As a writer and a reader, I am always entranced by the narrative flow that AC managed to sustain in her books. The writing carries the reader along until you realize you've been standing at the kitchen counter for 45 minutes reading just another few pages. You think, this could never happen, but you just keep reading. The milieux and plots, while certainly not early 21 century, are by no means as dated as some of the other writers from the golden age of mystery. I think of Miss Silver--and I enjoy those books immensely--but the mores and romantic attachments are dated. AC seems to have lifted her writing to a slightly higher, more timesless place.
Definitely one of the weakest Poirot novels. It reads to me like a very elderly lady, which Christie was, trying to understand the swinging 60's London scene through her characters and getting it all wrong. Kind of sad and depressing to be honest. Skip it and go for the earlier Poirot novels.
Another Agatha Christie's masterpiece. The unforgettable and unsinkable Ariadne Olivier figures as a very important character, bringing much spark to the plot. Hercule Poirot, as always, is outstanding.A highly recommendable classic.
Back in the day, many years ago, reading an Agatha Christie was must reading. After reading John Curran'a book Agatha Christie's secret notebooks, I decided to re-visit Hercule Poirot. So far I have read 30 and the third girl ranks amoung the top 25. Red herrings, mystery,a story line that keeps you guessing and of course Hercule with his friend Mrs Oliver, (she is Agatha Christie's ulta ego). A missing girl, who claims she shot someone, or so she thinks, and her friends think nothing about not seeing her for days, including her family. When Agatha wrote this book it was in the '30's, and still today it is timeless. Did she kill someone, is she really missing, and why did she think Hercule was to old to help her?
I only wish there were more Hercule Poirot books because I think I've read them all. Oh, except for the "last one." I haven't read that yet. Saving it for special occasion. You know the one that was found after Christie died. The Third Girl certainly isn't her best - but what could compete with Orient Express or one of my own favorites - Murder in the Clouds.But this one is good because it brings back the apple-eating mystery writer. I always see her as a good way for Christie to voice her own opinions on the writing process.
A different rythem to this Agatha Christie/Hercule Poirot Mystery. Very interesting story and I really enjoyed it but there were sections were Poirot is musing about the case in his mind that seem to go on forever. Still I enjoyed the book and I'm glad I bought it but it is a slower read than usual for Chrisite.
Maybe I am stupid about these things but I was wrong about the killer to the last few pages. No Poirot, me. It was an enjoyable read and I particular like the Poirot books where Ariadne plays a major or at least synergistic role.
It's not one of her VERY best but it has long been one of my personal favorites because Mrs. Oliver is Poirot's "Hastings," & their combination is fascinating. If you want to find out about "Mod England" of the 1960's, there's a lot here about that too. Of course, there's the usual convoluted plot and interesting characters. And it was WONDERFUL to read big print & not strain to enjoy a novel!! Betty Willard.

His name is Larry Haun... His name is Larry Haun... Now that my fight club chant of reverence is over Larry is great carpenter and teacher of the trade the book and videos are both great I recomend them for any one looking to learn how to build or repair homes. Larry may have sadly passed but he will always be my Jedi master.
I am so glad I purchased this book. The author writes about pertinent facts in great detail. His instructions are clear and very helpful in all phases of residential construction. Larry Huan's 30 + years building houses can be plainly seen from the insightful drawings and related photo's on each page. The books title is evident through every chapter where the author tries to speed up the construction in the most proficient way possible. For more information on the author his video's are a great supplemental for this book (youtubedotcom).
I bought this book because we are building a huge garage this spring. Obviously we didn’t need the section on framing floors or a roof since we are pouring a cement slab and buying trusses. The book is actually an entertaining read though as well. We also watched the companion videos on YouTube. Larry Haun was a great carpenter.
Great book about framing tips and general structural carpentry.If you haven't seem Larry on HGTV or whatever channel it was, I highly recommend you watch his videos. He's an old timer who just knows how to get things done fast and, as the book says, efficiently. I've never seen anyone drive nails like he does. It's like watching an artist at work.Used this book and really no significant prior experience to frame all interior walls of an entire 1000sf third story addition at my place in Mass. The building inspector passed me first time and complimented the "framer" on his work (I hadn't told him it was me since I didn't want him to be looking for things to ding me on).

Ahoy there me mateys! This book showed up towards the end of journey into the FODMAP diet. I had already been (finally) diagnosed and was at the tail end of figuring out the list of many foods that cause me grief.  But I saw this title on NetGalley, thought "well more information is always good", and got a partial eArc from the publisher. I was mainly interested in the recipe recommendations and to see what other recommendations there were for combating bloat as all the doctors were disinclined or confused about how to actually treat the recurring systems that just wouldn't go away. None of the standard medication worked for me.So I ended up really liking this book as an additional resource. The particular sections that were invaluable dealt with supplements, fiber, and the research results of some of the recent studies. I do think this would be a great starting point into possibilities of bloating issues and wish I had this back in the beginning. There is even a quiz to that can help determine which conditions ye might have. So much suffering and useless medical tests could have been avoided. I do have to say that the recipes in this book were lackluster. Basically there are a couple of recipes for each type of diagnosis. So don't buy this for the recipes. But if ye experience unusual painful bloating and are at a loss as to how to get rid of it then this book might be handy. Arrr!

A leading critic of artificial intelligence research returns to the attack, attempting to lay the groundwork for an analysis of the true nature of intelligence. Building on his arguments in The Emperor's New Mind (not reviewed), Penrose (Mathematics/Oxford) begins by refuting the assertion that true intelligence can be attained--or even adequately simulated--by the strictly computational means to which current computers are ultimately limited. Much of his argument depends closely on the application of G”del's Undecidability Theorem to Turing machines--deep waters for laypeople, although the fundamentals of his argument are accessible to readers without sophisticated mathematical training. Having disposed of the central tenets of current AI research, Penrose then turns to an even more fundamental question: the actual foundations in modern physics (i.e., relativity and quantum theory) of the phenomenon of consciousness. Here much of his summary depends on fairly complex mathematical reasoning, although the key points are summarized for the general reader who has been willing to follow him so far. Penrose feels that a new physical synthesis, reconciling the paradoxes of quantum theory and bringing them into harmony with Einstein's gravitational theories, is ultimately necessary to explain the noncomputational elements of consciousness and intelligence. He speculates on the possible role of cellular structures called microtubules in creating a quantum phenomenon on a macroscopic scale within the brain, but grants that more research is needed to establish any connection between physical and mental phenomena. His conclusion steps back to a philosophical overview of the subject, paying homage to Plato, among others. A challenging examination of a central problem of modern philosophy, with no final answers but plenty of food for thought. I rate this book highly for its many interesting insights---great food for thought. I think Penrose' assessments of models of consciousness by other physicists are on the mark, including his critique of decoherence theories. He is probably on the right track in treating the collapse of the wave function as a real phenomenon, in which case he is correct is saying "what is going on will have no chance of being properly understood until we have a much more profound appreciation of the very nature of matter, time, space, and the laws that govern them." (p. 395)I was not persuaded by Penrose' own theory at all. The only connection between quantum mechanics and consciousness is that they are both mysterious. Moreover, it is the qualia of consciousness that is mysterious, not the fact that we are non-algorithmic.
Penrose is my favorite science author. He's not for everyone -- he's not afraid to use mathematics, and his diagrams (for me) are often unintelligible, but his pursuit of an understanding of the mind at the quantum level is worthwhile, even noble.
You think when you skim it "oh this is too mathy" but it isn't. You can understand everything, without any advanced math skills at all!

It's really a five star book discounted here by one star because those lacking physics and mathematics will find some passages hard work, even though the author is being as kind as possible in a book of this calibre.The book is a neat sequel to his "The Emperor's New Mind", extending the central theme that our little-understood human consciousness allows us to think way beyond the computational and mindless world of artificial intelligence.In doing so, we have a marvellous survey of classical and modern physics, including the mysteries of the quantum world.Sir Roger raises the question 'Will we ever be able to truly understand our own Nature-provided brain and its processes in terms of our own science?', and argues that, somewhere out there beyond our present reach, there is a unifying Platonic view of the Universe.This book is a tour de force on several planes. Highly recommended.
Penrose's writing is somewhat thick. It is worth slogging through it, however. Consciousness is the X factor in experiments. It is a large part of quantum mechanics. I liked this book. It is not light reading, though.
I studied physics and math and love popular science. Still, I found this book obtuse and non-engaging. Gave up after 3 focused attempts at reading it.
This is not an easy book to read or to follow. Still, it's required reading for someone like me who is interested in the Penrose-Hameroff theory of consciousness. I am always grateful when academics like Penrose write books for the general public.
Excellent alternative view to mainstream philosophy. Vast improvement over the emperor's new mind, especially in terms of having taken criticism on board. It can be read independently, even though it can also be read as a sequel of sorts. If mind and consciousness are interesting to you, and you like hearing about theories in physics, this is a great book.
