This book was recommended on the first day of my conversion class, but it is not appropriate for someone who is still deciding whether or not to convert (i.e. someone who is choosing a Jewish life). This book might be useful at the end of your conversion process, as you prepare for your beit din and mikveh, because it focuses mainly the ritual of conversion itself. This book is not about the things you need to know before choosing to convert to Judaism. By reading this book, I did not learn any of the things I needed to know before my rabbi and community declared me suitable for conversion. It also does not discuss the halakhah which you need to know in order to live a Jewish life; but these are things I wanted to consider while choosing to live a Jewish life. You can't choose to be Jewish unless you know what it is like to be Jewish, and those topics are not discussed in this book. (Possibly they are discussed in Diamant's sequel: Living a Jewish Life). However, once you have chosen to be Jewish, and are ready to undergo the ritual of conversion, this book does provide some peace of mind by explaining what to expect during the appearance before a beit din, circumcision, and mikveh.

This book is amazingly helpful for anyone who is considering Judaism or currently converting. It has helpful and sensitive advice for dealing with upset relatives (including how to deal with parents who may feel hurt that you are leaving the religion they raised you in), advice on choosing which sect of Judaism that is right for you, finding a rabbi, detailed information on the conversion process, advice on beginning to celebrate Shabbat and Jewish holidays, converting and/or raising Jewish children, finding your footing in your new religion and so much more. The chapters explaining the nuances of what being Jewish actually means is full of necessary information for anyone thinking of converting. I learned that Judaism isn't just a religion, but a people. Once you are Jewish, you are Jewish for life. Even if you don't believe in g-d or celebrate Shabbat. Even if you convert to another religion you will still be Jewish. It's like joining a family more than a religion. I find that unbelievably beautiful. This book and Jewish Literacy have been invaluable to me. I can not recommend them enough.

Comprehensive, yet easily read in just a few sittings, this great little book answers all your questions, including some you might not have thought to ask. Where one answer doesn't fit all, the author may offer a few broad-based suggestions before recommending a talk with a rabbi. This book is in my opinion a great "first stop" in the library for someone who wishes to know about conversion, even - or perhaps especially - for those who have not yet set foot inside a synagogue. If you, or a friend or other loved one, is exploring judaism - whether personally or for a child - you won't go wrong if you stop and read this book first.

A terrific book written for those who are contemplating conversion to Judaism. The author explores conversion for Reform, Conservative and (now limited) Orthodox possibilities. She discusses "blended" families and how to maintain relationships with ones family of origin, so no one feels slighted, or left out. She also discusses what prospective converts can expect from their Rabbi and other supports which may be available to the convert, formally and informally, within their Shul (Synagogue). This book is a fountain of information and I would recommend it highly.

I am in the process of converting to Judaism. My Rabbi required that I read this book. I will also mention that Anita Diamant is a local author. The book is excellent. Anita answered a lot of my questions. I particularly liked how she shared her experiences. It's a great read. I bought the Kindle version so that I always have it with me.

I love this book! I'm a covert in-progress, and this book really cleared up a lot for me. I even gave it to my mother to read, and she understands Judaism and my conversion much better, now. It is worth noting that Anita Diamant is Reform Jewish, and the book seems very much geared towards that branch of the faith. Just a note.

This book is written from a progressive Jewish perspective which the book happily admits. It addresses "Who Is A Jew" and who recognizes one as such from a progressive perspective and admits that converts who undergo liberal conversion most likely will not be recognized as Jewish by Orthodox community. It is an easy informative read about what converts go through with their own families, leaving traditions and customs behind, family strains and tensions, even psychological scarring, and even be treated like "the other" by Jews by birth. It makes a good case for converts, it is also a good read for born Jews to understand what a convert's perspective of Jewish life may be. As the book said, Jews, born or convert, are all Jews by choice.

This book does not "talk down" to the reader, yet does not assume that the reader is familiar with terms and wordings used by the Jewish faith. I recommend this book to anyone beginning the thought process of conversion. This was not my first book I read, but I wish that it had been & will recommend it highly. It answered all the questions I had been seeking answers to, & did so in concise form.
