Rigor is a term that is heard a lot in the teaching field these days, yet not many teachers really understand what it is. I think most teachers have some fuzzy idea that "rigor" equates to "harder" or more homework. In this book, Barbara Blackburn first clearly defines the terms, then shows that increasing rigor is more that just adding more problems or more homework. Using her background as both a public school teacher and a college professor, she provides a number of clear and easily implemented ideas to increase the rigor in your classroom. One of the things I like most about these books (I have read two of Barbara Blackburn's books this summer)is that they display an awareness of the problems faced by teachers and provide real-world, easily implemented solutions to adding rigor to your classroom. This is a great book and a real eye-opener. I recommend it to anyone in teaching or education.
I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to improve student learning and is looking for ideas of just how to do that in their classroom. This would be a great book for beginning and experienced teachers alike. As I read I took many notes of other ideas to further explore on my own. It provides you with opportunities to apply in your classroom. I will be sharing this book with my PLC group at school for sure.
I teach kindergarten so although this text is thorough and has some amazing ideas, I will not be able to do most of them. On the other hand I will and can use the author's templates for personal reflection and growth.
It is a quick read with many good suggestions and though provoking questions for a teacher to ask himself/herself, I feel like I am adding to my own journey as a teacher and human being. I loved this audiobook so much that I wrote this review in hopes that word will get out how incredible this is and it will become available in print form because there is so much interesting historical content I wish I could read it as well as listening, although the narrators are AWESOME. - I enjoyed every chapter and I am such a fan now.I’m listening to it with my husband now as he is a feminist, but like most, doesn’t know all the dirty details women have been experiencing through the ages and people should know.I wish this book was required reading.
I heard both the authors being interviewed on “ the edge with Mark Thompson†and loved the idea of it. I got my copy dove right in. I’m drawn to books on history and even more so one that touch on little discussed topics. I did not care much for the style of how it was presented but the facts where great in a horrible way. Then 23mins into the book there was an attack on so called “Bernie Brosâ€. I am a huge Bernie supporter and I observed how that made up term was thrown around during the 2016 primary in the most ridiculous ways. I find it sad that the authors would use this pejorative term "Bernie Bro". It shows a real lack of critical thinking and also blindness to how and why it was used. Our maybe they agree with the term. I can read authors that I disagree with but I have no urge read anything from ones who write about history yet ignore the history in front of them.
I thought I knew a great deal about women's history, at 71 I've lived through most of it. But no, indignities is not the proper word. Horrors are more like it. Equal Rights Ladies or we'll slip back again! It takes real talent to make this subject funny and they have. I NEED this book in hard copy. Thanks

I love this book beyond words. Very eye-opening and informative. I learned a ton and laughed a ton... which was cathartic...being a woman and all.

The speakers talk very very fast, and just one mode - sarcasm -. Difficult to listen to for long periods. At least that’s how it was for 15-20 minutes, haven’t gone back to see if the rest is more dynamic.

Having been in the building business all of my life, and always having an interest in timber frame construction, I watched the progression of the project very closely.Through the years I have had some pretty good crews, but very few had the same dedication and pride in their craft and the company they represent, as every member of the Arrow Timber Framing crew have.Bert, Josh, and Matt did a great job of helping me through the design and building process. Their computer software is amazing, as you can see early on what the project will look like, and they are able to show you options in your design immediately.A lot of decisions about the design, timber size, truss makeup and things that make the project just right, both aesthetically and structurally, would have been easier and more comfortable for me, if I would have had the book in hand in the early stages.The text and the pictures are great. Bert and his crew at Arrow Timber Framing are simply the BEST!

We have ties to Texas and are naturally crazy about bluebonnets, as well as admiring anything Tomi de Paolo does, so when I saw this as an Amazon suggestion, I bit on it. We also are rather into Indian lore. It is a brief little story with a moral, but I was in tears by the time I finished previewing it! Not quite what I had expected to hand on to the grandkids whose story books so far have had "happy endings".I can only hope they'll grow up to be as unselfish as the heroine of the book.
After reading the legend I feel it is not for young children as it is too intense. I did not give it to my grandchildren as originally intended.
This book was very good for preschool ages 3-5. The book was easy to understand and the children listened while it was read to them.
The Story of Bluebonnet was exactly as described and arrived quickly. My class enjoyed the story and making bluebonnets afterwards.

I am continually in awe and full of admiration for the Artic and north pole explorers of the early 20th century. Their tales of survival in incredibly difficult and life threatening conditions are simply amazing. All done with what we today call incompetent & primitive support and materials and inaccurate maps !The Greely expedition story and the role politics that played in their rescue (and almost doomed the survivors to death) is a very special story for you to digest.
I loved this book as much as I loved "Endurance." Very compelling, impossible to put down! Impossible that that these men were able to carry on, and yet, they did. I love all the details of the men's personalities, the weather, the food or the lack thereof. I'm ready to go back through it to pick up on anything I missed by reading so fast. You will think about this book long after you've finished it.
An excellent narrative of the perils navigating ships through polar ice; the hardships of living in a polar region for normal mortals not accustomed to these northern latitudes; the endurance of living on minimal rations and still keeping civil order, a real testament to the will of survival under most harsh and unfavorable conditions; the bureaucracy and red tape of Congress and department secretaries; and lastly the destructive nature of the media not only focusing but also without factual evidence exaggerating and lying about the negative living and survival conditions prior to their rescue.
Don't always write reviews for books I read but this one was such a great story that I had to.It's the kind of story I wish my boys would read, and will recommend to them, hoping that a little something from the examples set by Rice, Brainard, Long, et al will resonate.Incredible how primitive it was in 1881-83, in terms of clothing, materials, communications.Cannot conceive of how frustrating it must have been to try to get the rescue mission authorized through Congress, same as today, it's tragic how some view politics so importantly & above moral responsibility.
Superb! A compelling and harrowing story; a highly skilled author who doesn't give anything away and keeps you in suspense. Really good research. This is one of my favorite books in the adventure field.
This is an amazing case of truth being stronger than fiction. To see the remarkable fortitude of these men under such brutal conditions of weather and conflicting personalities is almost unbelievable. Add to that the obstacles of finally getting a rescue operation after such a terrible and frustrating wait underscores the nasty business of political forces.I was so glad to read an (almost) happy ending.
Excellent story of survival and challenges of exploring and being stranded while sailing in the arctic region in the 1920s. The hardshipsendured by this expedition were beyond anything we would ever like to find ourselves in. Enjoyed reading the story and the book pulledmany key exerts from diary entries from all the members of the expedition. Worth the read...
