I am continually in awe and full of admiration for the Artic and north pole explorers of the early 20th century. Their tales of survival in incredibly difficult and life threatening conditions are simply amazing. All done with what we today call incompetent & primitive support and materials and inaccurate maps !The Greely expedition story and the role politics that played in their rescue (and almost doomed the survivors to death) is a very special story for you to digest.
I loved this book as much as I loved "Endurance." Very compelling, impossible to put down! Impossible that that these men were able to carry on, and yet, they did. I love all the details of the men's personalities, the weather, the food or the lack thereof. I'm ready to go back through it to pick up on anything I missed by reading so fast. You will think about this book long after you've finished it.
An excellent narrative of the perils navigating ships through polar ice; the hardships of living in a polar region for normal mortals not accustomed to these northern latitudes; the endurance of living on minimal rations and still keeping civil order, a real testament to the will of survival under most harsh and unfavorable conditions; the bureaucracy and red tape of Congress and department secretaries; and lastly the destructive nature of the media not only focusing but also without factual evidence exaggerating and lying about the negative living and survival conditions prior to their rescue.
Don't always write reviews for books I read but this one was such a great story that I had to.It's the kind of story I wish my boys would read, and will recommend to them, hoping that a little something from the examples set by Rice, Brainard, Long, et al will resonate.Incredible how primitive it was in 1881-83, in terms of clothing, materials, communications.Cannot conceive of how frustrating it must have been to try to get the rescue mission authorized through Congress, same as today, it's tragic how some view politics so importantly & above moral responsibility.
Superb! A compelling and harrowing story; a highly skilled author who doesn't give anything away and keeps you in suspense. Really good research. This is one of my favorite books in the adventure field.
This is an amazing case of truth being stronger than fiction. To see the remarkable fortitude of these men under such brutal conditions of weather and conflicting personalities is almost unbelievable. Add to that the obstacles of finally getting a rescue operation after such a terrible and frustrating wait underscores the nasty business of political forces.I was so glad to read an (almost) happy ending.
Excellent story of survival and challenges of exploring and being stranded while sailing in the arctic region in the 1920s. The hardshipsendured by this expedition were beyond anything we would ever like to find ourselves in. Enjoyed reading the story and the book pulledmany key exerts from diary entries from all the members of the expedition. Worth the read...

Does being funny get you girls?Growing up in Ohio, I was convinced that it did. I got this from a source I took to be representative of all women: Playboy centerfolds. Every issue, the Playmate Data Sheet would, with astonishing consistency, indicate that Miss Whenever's turn-on was "a sense of humor." (Turn-off? "Phony people.") I vowed to be a hilarious sincere person who would have sex with lots of naked people named Brandi. I accepted this view of humor-as-pheromone despite mountains of real-world evidence to the contrary. At Shaker High, the girls mainly went for jocks whose idea of a witty retort was a wedgie. And if I had looked a little more closely at Playboy's monthly "Party Pics" feature, I might have noticed that the bunnies at Hef's Mansion gravitated towards the laps of people like Lee Majors, the star of "The Six Million Dollar Man" and not, to my knowledge, a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table.What being funny got me, mostly, was a lot of free time. While the jocks were busy having tantric romps with cheerleaders, I kept myself occupied by reading Mark Twain, Woody Allen, and the many comic geniuses of The National Lampoon. Little did I know then that, over the course of a thousand dateless nights, a Library of America collection was being born. So, getting back to my original question: does being funny get you girls? No. It gets you to be the editor of a humor anthology.

With just a few exceptions, I was over a hundred pages into this book before I had my first belly laugh. From there, it picked up steam and made me very glad I bought the book. I think the problem is that the book is designed to be a chronology of American humor, but a lot of the older pieces just have not stood the test of time very well. Exceptions early in the book include pieces by Mark Twain, O. Henry and Peter De Vries. Starting on page 140 with Jean Shepard, the book is very consistent in its quality. I think the book should have been titled "The Best of Modern American Humor" and Andy - who I think is hilarious - should have ditched the earlier pieces. But - still a worthwhile read.
I love humor writing, especially in the form of short stories and essays. This book covers a great many writers in the genre and has some wonderful selections. Naturally, humor is a subjective art form, so what is funny to some isn't to others. Most of the stories I found to be very funny. Others had me scratching my head a bit - but I've seen those same selections in other anthologies, so perhaps you'll laugh at them more than I would. Regardless, I'm glad I have the book in my collection, and I'll definitely be reading them again and again. The book itself is very attractive. Great book jacket, nice binding, excellent paper quality and type. A good choice as a gift.
I'm a fan of humor anthologies and have a collection that includes books by E.B. White, Gene Shalit, and many more. This is the best because it was assembled by one of the funniest guys around, Andy Borowitz, the first winner of the National Press Club's award for comedy and the guy behind the Borowitz Report, the most hilarious tweet feed there is. I grabbed my copy as soon as it arrived yesterday and read for an hour, enjoying old favorites and finding new favorites. Borowitz begins with Twain but instead of the usual jumping frog or whitewashed fence he makes an unexpected but absolutely perfect and timely choice with Twain's declaration of his candidacy for President. I was delighted to see George Ade, Charles Portis, Frank Sullivan, and Peter DeVries included -- for different reasons, all four have been neglected and all four merit thoughtful reconsideration. Their selections are also superbly chosen. I was even more delighted to find that Orchid Thief author Susan Orlean could be so funny, to see many of my current favorites like Sloane Crosley and David Rakoff and Wanda Sykes, and to be introduced to authors who are new to me like Jenny Allen and Henry Beard and Larry Wilmore. Dave Barry's discussion of men, women, and relationships and Bernie Mac's description of African-American funerals are priceless. The piece by Donald Barthelme on the questionnaire about writers and drinking and the Molly Ivins about Texas politics, "the finest form of free entertainment ever invented" are among my favorites because they show how the simple recitation of actual facts can be funnier than anything you could exaggerate or make up. This book is a treasure trove of laughter and an ideal gift for anyone who needs to be cheered up or refreshed, which these means just about everyone you know.
I wish I could write half as well as these writers. To convey the subject and the story in such a way that makes the reader laugh out loud is a talent that is unique among writers. Great humorous fiction, great comedic films and comedians are often under rated and under appreciated. Don't get me wrong, we love our comedians and those who make us laugh. We do not, however, take them seriously. I think this is very wrong. What could be more important than to have a daily laugh that makes our sides hurt or even a laugh that makes one pees one's self a little? Wouldn't having Stephen Colbert for president have been a great thing? We really should have statues erected of all the court jesters of all time and not these stodgy old mounted warriors with swords and such. Thanks to Andy Borowitz you have created a new, go to book, for me when I need a reminder that there is hope for humanity. :^)
Some of the writers in this book were very funny, but a lot of the older ones I suspect were considered a lot funnier when their stuff was current.
Poor book
It took everything I had not to buy this for myself when it was released, but I knew my husband would know me well enough to get me a signed copy for Christmas. Clearly I over estimated him. I got one - just not signed. But it didn't disappoint. For three nights I got in bed and laughed - with the book of course. It introduced me to some new talented and funny writers (new in that I didn't know who they were) and reacquainted me with all my favorites. Barry, Sedaris, Onion, Carlin, Efron, Keiler. Love it and totally worth the wait. Ready for the next one and hoping it will be filled with more Borowitz.
Humor is subjective. Just did not find many of the stories very funny.

I'm at 5th grade teacher who read Ghost to my class earlier this school year. The kids ate it up, and literally begged for me to read more. I have just finished Patina. My students haven't even read it yet! And I truly think it's even better than Ghost!Patty is totally relatable to kids (boys and girls) of any race. Though, I really think it's notable that this is a book with a female of color as the main character. I usually really have to search to HARD find such refreshing, entertaining and thought-provoking writing.I love Jason Reynolds!
I'm a middle school language arts teacher, and my kids are in love with JA's track series. After reading GHOST, they BEGGED me to read PATINA. I will end the school year reading this book with them. (Although some have already devoured it. And I should mention these are "reluctant" readers.) I feel in love with Reynolds characters. If he ever quits his writing gig--which I hope he NEVER does--he could be a family counselor without obtaining a degree. He gets families and the complicated, messy relationships that make up this social unit that we all crave, need, and often pull our hair out over. Families, like the fictional ones in Reynold's books, aren't perfect and they come in different flavors. PATINA gives readers hope: they too can navigate life within a complex, imperfect, broken, and beautifully unique family. Thanks, Jason Reynolds, for writing books kids love and relate too.

This book was smaller than I expected. Basically it is a bunch of bullet points and definitions of major concepts for the MCAT. Sometimes when I read my actual review books from Examkrackers and Kaplan, I get lost in the little details and the concepts can become convoluted. This book helps me stay focused on what is important. After reading this book, I do return to the other books and the concepts become clearer. Now this book isn't going to be the only book you should get when studying for the MCAT, however I believe that it will help explain things in a simple and direct manner which can helpful.
Love this book! It's the only good New MCAT 2015 styled study guide I could find. Notice I said study guide and not full length review textbook. I am using the AAMC material, kaplan books, and this book. I love this book for 2 reasons1. This study guide is great because it lets me quickly run through the concepts that take forever to read through in my kaplan book, so it's a great refresher of concepts just like a personal study guide would be that you make for yourself on any other test. This also allows you to get a simple understanding quickly of each aspects of what's going to be on the MCAT.2. I love that it categorizes each section into the 3 sections that the MCAT will be on. For example the section that talks about the electrochemistry and curcuits also explains the physiological part of the nervous system which helps you bring the concepts of physics and biology together. The Kaplan books don't do this.When I need to dig deeper into a concept I go to youtube/khan videos and my kaplan books. My Kaplan books are nice because they are like a summarized version of my textbooks. They also came with 3 practice tests, and a bunch of online study material.I was skeptical of this MCAT Study Guide, but using it over a month of hard core studying I have began to rely on it and love it!!!The End
You. Must. Get. This. ... it became my phone-equivalent, and I never went anywhere without it. Obviously, it's a reference-at-hand, and it's purpose is to re-familiarize you with the content and enhance concept application. Definitely not meant as a primary learning resource so if that's what you're objective is, this book will not leave you satisfied. BUT still buy it to supplement your learning. Every page in my copy is bursting with colors, written-in information, and overly read.IN ANY CASE .. this should be a staple in your MCAT collection. I have the complete subject reviews of Kaplan, TPR, EK, NextStep and selective supplementary materials from each, as well as, barron's and Gold Standard, which are all amazing and extremely helpful... BUT THIS book linked them all.
Basically, it's an annotated AAMC outline, a great reference/addendum to your standard prep/material. The problem is that there are lots of errors, and the paper it's printed on is very cheap/thin. A lot of the images are fuzzy/low resolution. It's about $20 too expensive.
TAKE A CHANCE ON THIS BOOK !!! LOVE this MCAT book! it's a great all in one reference that works with the official AAMC book, I have several other MCAT books but, none of them follow the AAMC as well as the Medquest MCAT Fastpass study guide.
MCAT Bible highly recommend!!Small enough to take anywhere!!!

I highly recommend this translation of Dante's Inferno. For many years, Ciardi's translation has been the standard and it has much to recommend it. But Ciardi's rhymed stanzas are looser, wordier, and less faithful to the original than Thornton's blank verse. Thornton brings us closer to what Dante wrote. And the excellent notes at the end of each canto help bring this masterpiece to life for a modern reader.
With decades of study and meticulous craftsmanship, Dr. Peter Thornton has offered his translation of “The Inferno.†I do not know Italian, but I have read a couple of other translations of “The Inferno,†and I found this one the best for several reasons. First, the poetry is vivid. I felt like orange flames and the stench of Sulphur were my companions as much as were Dante and Virgil.The verse itself is a second reason I liked this translation. The meter – iambic pentameter, the ordinary meter of the English language – does not intrude into the poetry itself. That is, I wasn’t conscious of stretching of words or awkward diction for the sake of the meter.You can enjoy the translation without bothering to read the footnotes, but once you start, you are off on another journey, equally absorbing – this one through contemporary (to Dante) Florentine history, Christian metaphors and allusions, Roman legend and mythology, and Catholic scholars from Augustine on.Read the translation; savor the footnotes. There’s always room for a fresh version of hell.
THANK YOU !! I've been trying to expose my kids to more of the classics. But every translation of the Divine Comedy I've come across has been so difficult that I couldn't even get through Hell (felt like hell trying to read it). UNTIL NOW !!! Thank you Mr. Douglas Neff for this translation. It keeps all the flavor, tension, and character; and stays true to the original story. Reading this translation, I find myself more absorbed and engaged in trying to understand what Dante was trying to get across, and why he picked certain persons for certain levels, and doing research into some of the people, places, vices, etc. that he talks about, instead of spending hours trying to decipher the actual language of the translation. My 7 year old is totally engaged, while at the same time, my 15 year old and I are getting into some very interesting discussions (Dante put Pope Celestine V with those souls who neither heaven nor hell want, because he resigned as Pope . . . I wonder what that means for old former pope Benedict XVI / cardinal Ratzinger who just did the same thing). And none of us are getting ground down by having to stop and try and translate the language.I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get this book. You will not be disappointed. I'm now trying to find a comparable translation of Purgatory and Paradise so we can complete the story.
Dante's THE INFERNO is a classic. Written around 1321, the book predates most of the classics, except Homer's works of course. But even before Shakespeare, this book heralded in an uncommonly twisted and almost perverse story of Dante's descent into Hell and his description of everything he sees and those he meets. It's eloquently written. Not necessarily an easy read but it does tribute to the language and reminds the reader that our vernacular has so much more color than the reductio ad absurdum we see being used today. Dante's descriptions of the nightmare that sinners endure at each level is pretty graphic, sometimes bordering on horrifying, and who knows, he might even be credited with the first narrative on the subject of flesh-eating zombies which are so popular today. The narrative also gives the reader a feel for certain historical relevancies of that and earlier times and how Dante saw the world. This particular version of the book, by John Ciardi, provides excellent descriptive notes after each section, clarifying things mentioned in the story so the reader stays on track. Lastly, I could not help but wonder if the Vatican of that time didn't encourage the book to be written simply because of its thematic message of what happens to sinners, particularly those who sin against God and the Church or become apostates. It certainly provides compelling imagery to anyone who believes in Heaven and Hell. Add it to your reading arsenal - it's worth the read.
