These short accounts of medical mysteries are like potato chips. You’ll find you can’t read just one. You finish the account of the young man who was infected with a schistosomiasis-causing worm while swimming in the Nile - then you just have to go on to see what “The Orange Man†and “The Dead Mosquitoes†are about.There’s a wide-ranging wealth of information here about people who manifested unusual, hard-to-diagnose symptoms, but whose problems were eventually pinned down and solved. Since most of these conditions are rare, you might not experience the problems themselves – but then again, you might. In which case, you can be an informed participant in helping your doctor reach a diagnosis. You won’t be put in the position of the woman who was repeatedly diagnosed by Freudian psychiatrists with having a passive/aggressive, attention-seeking antagonism toward her husband – when in fact she had Wilson’s disease, a genetic condition that causes a person to accumulate copper in various organs.The one drawback to these essays is the fact that some of them might be a bit outdated. They were written from the late 1940’s to the late 1980’s. While it’s amazing how currently applicable most of the information still is, there are a few exceptions. For example, Roueche wrote at a time when there was no specific vaccine for any type of hepatitis. That isn’t true any longer regarding hepatitis types A and B.Another feature of this writing that I initially thought might be a negative is Roueche’s tendency to track the details of each investigation in time and place. He will report that he called Dr. X at 12:15 on March 3, then proceeded to his office at 123 X Place and arrived at 12:45. For a moment I was irritated at this level of what seemed irrelevant detail about activities that took place decades ago. But then I got in the spirit of this approach. It reminded me of the style of the old “Dragnet†TV show. These details serve to pace the reader through each case, to get the feel of actually following along in the detectives’ footsteps as they track these very interesting medical malefactors to their sources.
Gentle, lovely, scary. An acquired taste for readers who later grew into gobblers of blood, gore, and zombies. When a Berton Roueche medical investigation appeared in The New Yorker of old, it was an event. Roueche was the fore-runner to at least twenty very fine writers now doing the same thing: breaking into the genetic vault to try to understand how we catch diseases,what we can do about not catching them, and learning how to recognize them These narratives read today seem comfortable and natural, as indeed they were on publication. Roueche may have been one of the earlier writers to find and identify and stick to a niche. As friends in Easthampton in the 60s, there was nothing eerie or Charles Addams-ish about Berton or his lovely wife Kay. But they were quietly and seriously curious about medicine and could go underground for lengthy periods of time to scope out what they might have suspected. And we,as readers, were nine times out ten fascinated by what had been unearthed. This, readers, is a "source" of much that followed that has proven not only gripping but also seminal. Roueche was a good writer -- good in the sense of putting down clear prose and good in the sense of packing it with suspense. Here's his opening to one of the chapters, "A Man Named Hoffman.""Around ten o'clock in the morning of Wednesday, March 4, 1964, a man named Donald Hoffman presented himself for treatment at the Student Health Clinic of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, some thirty miles northwest of Cincinnati. Hoffman was thirty-six years old, married, and a residentof Cincinnati, but, as he explained to the receptionist, he was currently employed as an insulation installer, in Oxford . . . and his company had an arrangement with the clinic. He was here, he added, because he foreman had sent him. That was the only reason. His trouble was nothing -- an itchy sore on the side of his neck. He had probably picked up a sliver of glass-wool fiber. It had happened several times before. It was a common complaint in his trade."First, note the precision of the presentation and the detail Roueche gives us. We even know the time of day that Hoffman showed up at the clinic. This is authoritative stuff. It sounds like The Voice of God narrators in one of those post-war docudramas about Nazis and gangsters that were paeans to J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Or maybe "Dragnet." "It was four o'clock in the afternoon, Wednesday, March 4th. We were working the bunko squad out of Littering. It was hot in Los Angeles."Second, okay, the poor guy has an itchy sore on his neck, maybe from glass-wool fiber, right? Wrong. After a lengthy examination of Hoffman, his place of work, the materials he schleps around, it turns out that he has ANTHRAX -- a rare disease of goats! Most of the chapters are rather like detective stories. The patient presents with symptoms that are only slightly odd but turn out to be much odder than they seem.I read some of the later stories when they first appeared in The New Yorker and was enthralled, informed, and sometimes amused by them. My favorite is "The Orange Man." The patient shows up at his family doctor's office and is a bright pumpkin-orange -- but he doesn't realize it. His complaint is a stomach ache! His wife has never noticed the change either. Further, there is no disorder that turns the skin a bright orange. (The man, as it develops, has two simultaneous disorders, one that turns you red and one that turns you yellow.)It's an enjoyable and educational collection. And let me put it this way. If you like Agatha Christie, you ought to like "The Medical Detectives."

The sum of it is a wonderful picture of what life was like many years ago in and around Lake Geneva. So much variety; so many good times. All captured by the author's thoughtfully assembled collection. Be prepared to be amazed; be prepared to have these insights in the past shape your insights into the present.

Great pictures! I've been going there since I was a kid, and still was a great book! Very interesting!
What a delight to go back in my own history of visiting Lake Geneva beginning in the early 1940's and seeing a picture of WI. Power and Light where my uncle worked, Horticultural Hall where many a pilgramage was made from Chicago via auto or the Northwestern train (loved the depot pic) to the annual flower show and a special treat to dine afterwards at the Gargoyle! Even better was to get an appreciation of the area in the time my grandparents(came during the Irish potato famine in the 1840's) and mother (baptized at St. Francis de Sales-1898) lived and farmed in the Irish Woods area off Hwy 50. Thanks for this beautiful gift to my memories!

I thoroughly enjoy this book. Just the right amount of topical information to let us know the history on all of the present day lake locations I love. I did not know the rich backgounds on so many familiar places where I have spent time. Some street corners and lake scenes look the same today. Others, only a trace of familiarity or none all. It is fun to look at the postcard to try to find those ties to the past that root me into the Lake Geneva of today. Wonderful variety postcards too!

The examples of your work show very diverse styles. How did you become so versatile? Vincent Desjardins: I think in order to compete in today's competitive illustration market, an illustrator needs to be adaptable. But actually I think any versatility that I may have achieved is probably due to my career-long search for a style. I'd heard over and over again how important it is to develop a personal style and worried that my work was too all over the map. I've been doing my work digitally for over 20 years, where it's much easier to explore and take risks. If you make a mistake you can "undo" it, and you can save multiple versions of the same image. There are so many different illustrators that have influenced me that I often find myself creating challenges to see if I can do something in their style. KM: When my editor told me you were available to do the illustrations for Secrets of the Magic Ring, I was over-the-moon thrilled. How did you prepare for the project? VD: First off, I read the manuscript straight through. Then I went back over it for a second pass and underlined all of the passages that I felt had visual potential. When your editor forwarded me one of your emails where you said you were a fan of N.M. Bodecker, the illustrator of Edward Eager's books, I checked out all of his books so I could study the illustrations. Bodecker has a wonderful style. He was especially good at using patterns and stylizing things like trees and plants. KM: With publishers tightening their belts, fewer middle-grade books are now illustrated. What are your thoughts on this? VD: Of course, this is something that directly affects my profession, so as an illustrator it makes me sad. As an avid reader of children's middle-grade fiction, it also saddens me, especially when I browse the books in our library's children's classics section and I see the beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations that filled so many of the books from the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. I know that when I was a child, I would always go for the books that had pictures in them. When starting a book, I would look at all of the pictures first because then I found it fun to search for the accompanying text while I was reading. When I would get to the text that was being illustrated, I would always go back and forth between the picture and the text to see how the artist interpreted the author's words. I still do that. KM: Do you draw from memory? VD: Not entirely. I usually do a rough layout sketch of where I want the figures placed, and then I use various types of guides to help me flesh things out. For example, I will often search for images of plants and animals to use as drawing aids. Sometimes I will even search for things like women's hairstyles. For the dog, Clem, in Secrets of the Magic Ring, I looked at photographs of a breed of dog called an otterhound. For filling in simple background details--for example, the objects you might see in a laundry room--I usually just use my imagination and memory. This book is a sort of sequel to "Celia and the Fairies," this time the story is told largely through the eyes Celia's friend, Paul. Again, this a pretty breezy read told much in the same style and manner as "Celia." By the time I was done with this, I was actually surprised to find that I find Paul a slightly more likable, sympathetic character than Celia, who was mean to Paul a few times in the first book, despite being "friends." Themes include the difference of making the right or easy choice, friendship, and loyalty, and so on. There was quite a bit of point-of-view shifting in this book, compared to the first, which may bother some readers. This book would probably be a good book to read with your younger readers that enjoy tales of magic, with some light drama, and even a few laughs. Overall, it's not a bad way to spend a few hours of reading time.
What a wonderful delightful story with great illustrations throughout the story for young boys and anyone no matter how old or gender. I loved it !! Secrets of the Magic Ring(for boys) is the sequel to Karen's Celia and the Fairies (for girls) both are children stories but I am way over senior citizen age and I absolutely love both of these stories and all the memories they brought back to me while I was growing up.While reading Secrets of the Magic Ring I saw many different subjects being brought up for this age group. Family and friend situations for children, like how Paul's Mom and Dad handle a disagreement , a bully to Paul in school, how Paul handles his friend's question about "is Celia your girlfriend", his reaction to a mysterious boy that shows up, about how important telling the truth is and how Paul handled the Secrets of the Magic Ring.Celia and her grandmother are also in this sequel. Clem, Paul's dog is a hoot. What a character Paul's aunt became with her reactions and the delightful fun she is now enjoying due the magical ring plus Jasmine the woods fairy who has to figure out how to control and solve all the chaos that this magic ring has caused.Vincent Desjardin should be very proud of the illustration's he did for this story and know that his work will be remembered by the reader's of this book for decade's and decade's to come . Karen's great gift of writing and Vincent's great gift of illustration's compliment each other's talent in this book. I happened upon this book on Amazon for a class project that my son had to do on a book of fiction. Unlike some other recommended books, Secrets of the Magic Ring, immediately caught his attention. For the first time in a long time, he totally enjoyed reading it and couldn't wait to find out what each of the characters wished for and to my surprise he recognized the meaning of the story. The book project was fun rather than a chore.Most rewarding of all, he asked me to get other books from Karen McQuestion and immediately started to read them. This is testament to the author, she captured my son's attention from the first sentence to the very last sentence.I thank you.
This is a fun fantasy adventure for young readers with interesting characters, and several twists and turns, concerning a magic ring a young man finds when his backyard is being excavated to put in a pool. I don't want to spoil the surprises, but wishes don't always turn out as expected!
I just love this author can't seem to read enough of her books. They are so enjoyable and a easy read no matter how old you are.Of course there was mystery and plenty of it but still very enjoyable. The people in this book makes you believe that this has happened in real life, or would like for it to happen. I really enjoyed this lovely tale of a young man and his friends as they discover a 'magic ring' with a bit of a bite ! This is suitable for anyone age 10 and up and the 'and up' group will certainly enjoy it very much. I bought this from Amazon.com and am glad I did.
