The examples of your work show very diverse styles. How did you become so versatile? Vincent Desjardins: I think in order to compete in today's competitive illustration market, an illustrator needs to be adaptable. But actually I think any versatility that I may have achieved is probably due to my career-long search for a style. I'd heard over and over again how important it is to develop a personal style and worried that my work was too all over the map. I've been doing my work digitally for over 20 years, where it's much easier to explore and take risks. If you make a mistake you can "undo" it, and you can save multiple versions of the same image. There are so many different illustrators that have influenced me that I often find myself creating challenges to see if I can do something in their style. KM: When my editor told me you were available to do the illustrations for Secrets of the Magic Ring, I was over-the-moon thrilled. How did you prepare for the project? VD: First off, I read the manuscript straight through. Then I went back over it for a second pass and underlined all of the passages that I felt had visual potential. When your editor forwarded me one of your emails where you said you were a fan of N.M. Bodecker, the illustrator of Edward Eager's books, I checked out all of his books so I could study the illustrations. Bodecker has a wonderful style. He was especially good at using patterns and stylizing things like trees and plants. KM: With publishers tightening their belts, fewer middle-grade books are now illustrated. What are your thoughts on this? VD: Of course, this is something that directly affects my profession, so as an illustrator it makes me sad. As an avid reader of children's middle-grade fiction, it also saddens me, especially when I browse the books in our library's children's classics section and I see the beautiful pen-and-ink illustrations that filled so many of the books from the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. I know that when I was a child, I would always go for the books that had pictures in them. When starting a book, I would look at all of the pictures first because then I found it fun to search for the accompanying text while I was reading. When I would get to the text that was being illustrated, I would always go back and forth between the picture and the text to see how the artist interpreted the author's words. I still do that. KM: Do you draw from memory? VD: Not entirely. I usually do a rough layout sketch of where I want the figures placed, and then I use various types of guides to help me flesh things out. For example, I will often search for images of plants and animals to use as drawing aids. Sometimes I will even search for things like women's hairstyles. For the dog, Clem, in Secrets of the Magic Ring, I looked at photographs of a breed of dog called an otterhound. For filling in simple background details--for example, the objects you might see in a laundry room--I usually just use my imagination and memory. This book is a sort of sequel to "Celia and the Fairies," this time the story is told largely through the eyes Celia's friend, Paul. Again, this a pretty breezy read told much in the same style and manner as "Celia." By the time I was done with this, I was actually surprised to find that I find Paul a slightly more likable, sympathetic character than Celia, who was mean to Paul a few times in the first book, despite being "friends." Themes include the difference of making the right or easy choice, friendship, and loyalty, and so on. There was quite a bit of point-of-view shifting in this book, compared to the first, which may bother some readers. This book would probably be a good book to read with your younger readers that enjoy tales of magic, with some light drama, and even a few laughs. Overall, it's not a bad way to spend a few hours of reading time.
What a wonderful delightful story with great illustrations throughout the story for young boys and anyone no matter how old or gender. I loved it !! Secrets of the Magic Ring(for boys) is the sequel to Karen's Celia and the Fairies (for girls) both are children stories but I am way over senior citizen age and I absolutely love both of these stories and all the memories they brought back to me while I was growing up.While reading Secrets of the Magic Ring I saw many different subjects being brought up for this age group. Family and friend situations for children, like how Paul's Mom and Dad handle a disagreement , a bully to Paul in school, how Paul handles his friend's question about "is Celia your girlfriend", his reaction to a mysterious boy that shows up, about how important telling the truth is and how Paul handled the Secrets of the Magic Ring.Celia and her grandmother are also in this sequel. Clem, Paul's dog is a hoot. What a character Paul's aunt became with her reactions and the delightful fun she is now enjoying due the magical ring plus Jasmine the woods fairy who has to figure out how to control and solve all the chaos that this magic ring has caused.Vincent Desjardin should be very proud of the illustration's he did for this story and know that his work will be remembered by the reader's of this book for decade's and decade's to come . Karen's great gift of writing and Vincent's great gift of illustration's compliment each other's talent in this book. Fairies are invisibly involved, portrayed as guardian angels of a sort.The story line is sure to please young crowds and the older still young at heart.A great, moral fairy tale happening in the 21st century.
I happened upon this book on Amazon for a class project that my son had to do on a book of fiction. Unlike some other recommended books, Secrets of the Magic Ring, immediately caught his attention. For the first time in a long time, he totally enjoyed reading it and couldn't wait to find out what each of the characters wished for and to my surprise he recognized the meaning of the story. The book project was fun rather than a chore.Most rewarding of all, he asked me to get other books from Karen McQuestion and immediately started to read them. This is testament to the author, she captured my son's attention from the first sentence to the very last sentence.I thank you.
This is a fun fantasy adventure for young readers with interesting characters, and several twists and turns, concerning a magic ring a young man finds when his backyard is being excavated to put in a pool. I don't want to spoil the surprises, but wishes don't always turn out as expected!
I just love this author can't seem to read enough of her books. They are so enjoyable and a easy read no matter how old you are.Of course there was mystery and plenty of it but still very enjoyable. The people in this book makes you believe that this has happened in real life, or would like for it to happen. Hey take a chance and read... once you do you will be surprised and like me want to read more of her books.
I really enjoyed this lovely tale of a young man and his friends as they discover a 'magic ring' with a bit of a bite ! This is suitable for anyone age 10 and up and the 'and up' group will certainly enjoy it very much. I bought this from Amazon.com and am glad I did.
It was a fun read for the Christmas break. And I wondered how they would solve the problem. Interesting ending.

I really wanted to like this book, but ultimately struggled to even slog my way through it. The subtitle says it all; This is ONE WOMAN'S journey. This woman touts herself as an expert, yet seems to have no formal training in eating disorders whatsoever. The author is a former (failed?) dancer and actress, and I felt that the depictions of her own struggles with an eating disorder seemed overly dramatized and disingenuous. I got the feeling that she didn't get the attention she wanted as a performer, so she exploited her disordered eating to gain fame via her book.To be more succinct about what I disliked about the book:The chapters are poorly organized and don't really form a cohesive strategy for dealing with an eating disorder. Her pedantic advice is clearly parroting motivational speakers that she looks up to like Tony Robbins. Most of the book delves into thinly veiled "law of attraction" territory (anyone read "The Secret"? Skelly clearly has!) without outlining any clear techniques to acheive freedom from ED. She does include an exercise at the end of each chapter that some might find helpful, which is the only reason I gave this book two stars instead of one. Also, if you are someone who is bothered by grammar and editing mistakes, skip this book. There are formatting errors and small editing oversights (i.e. using the word "identity" instead of "identify") that are distracting and unprofessional.I'm really disapointed in this title. A reviewer of another ED book that I read recently suggested this book, but unfortunately it fell short of expectations. One book on ED that I did find to be very helpful was "The Binge Code", which uses clearly organized, scientifically backed techniques for stopping a binge. I've found it to be enormously helpful so far. I also recently read "Never Binge Again" which was complete garbage, and I'd highly suggest steering clear of that one!
It's all too easy to feel completely alone. Like no one else could possibly understand the dark thoughts swirling around inside of you.And then someone else else puts the same exact thoughts on paper, and you feel...understood.That's exactly what Samantha has done with this book, and I admire her for that. It takes extreme courage to share your darkest days with the world, but she reached out. She shared that darkness, and in doing so she showed her light.And that's where most books of this nature stop - shining a light. But this book is different. Within each chapter, Samantha not only illuminates her struggles and her story, but she helps you down the path to recovery.She gives understandable, actionable steps that will help you dive deeper into what is hurting you and holding you back from living a life of health and happiness.This is a book for anyone who is looking for freedom from food and shame. Well worth your time.
The entire time I was reading this book, all I kept thinking was, “It’s like she’s writing about me and my life.†I’ve read many self-help books, especially in the realm of binge eating and weight loss, and the thing that I love most about Skelly’s book is that she’s not approaching disordered eating and body image issues from a place of fad diets and quick fixes. This is clearly a woman who truly suffered from this type of struggle and decided to lay all of her dark, painful cards on the table in hopes that doing so could help others overcome the vicious, life-consuming diet/binge cycle.Skelly isn’t about the “Band-Aid for bullet wound†methodology that is so prevalent in the billion-dollar diet industry, she’s about peeling back layers and digging deep to uncover and address the core issue of why you turn to food as a drug. Anyone who struggles with this issue and has been on the restrict/binge train for most of their life can tell you that binge eating is a symptom of a deeper emotional problem, and that is exactly what Skelly’s work targets.I really appreciate that this book goes beyond a memoir and provides mantras and action steps at the end of every chapter. It helps the reader go from just general consumption to ACTION, which is what you need to win this type of battle once and for all. It’s been a long time since I’ve come away from a book on this subject and actually felt hopeful and optimistic that I can overcome my issues and transform my life for the better, but that’s exactly how I felt once I finished Skelly’s book.
If you have any negative thoughts swirling through your mind about your body or the food you just ate in a fog, or the food you're fantasizing about eating, but won't allow yourself to eat, then this amazing book is for you. Samantha's work is raw and real and will give you the tools to understand why you continue to eat when your body is adequately fueled and how you can change that. This work will help you discover how to create a new mindset so that you can develop a more healthy relationship with your body and the food you choose to nourish yourself with.

It's not a how to book but a book full of small, very distinctive paper airplanes. There are directions for folding. There is a dragon and a tube shaped one ans they are all beautifully decorated.
You need scissors and tape. It's not just folding. It does have very easy to follow instructions and the colors are vivid.
The instructions are clear and well written. The kids love the colors of the paper for the planes and are having a great time with them!

I bought this book thinking it would be a comprehensive guide to California flora and fauna. As several other reviewers mentioned, the organization of the book (especially the plant section) makes it difficult to use. The bird section only shows a single bird picture, which makes it difficult to identify species where the male, female and juveniles have different plumage. There are also no distribution / range maps for any of the plants or animals. I went on a hike where I took pictures of ~20 plants and animals. The book only helped me identify 25% of them. For the rest, I had to use iNaturalist, Merlin, etc.Returning the book; it doesn't do its job.
This is not the version poctured. I have orderes this twice and feel the first time the picture matched, but I don't know how Amazon shares reviews since often it seems several different products share the same review. Anyways, this is the verion with three pictures on front. A mountain lion, poppies, a golden eagle, and a forest. Have to retract a star due to current mismatch, but the book itself is great, if not the version you might expect.Every Californian should own one of these. This is about half as thick as a bird book, but covers all other subjects one might want.It is not a complete reference for any subject it contains, but it is more than thorough enough to be a proper field guide.I, personally, have swapped to a bird app for hikes. I use this book to cover everything else as there is not yet anything remotely worth while in an app that covers all.It includes: Topography, Geology, Habitats, Conservation/Ecology, Weather, Constellations/the night sky, Flora/Fauna: trees, plants, algae, lichen, mushrooms, ferns, wildflowers, invertebrates: spiders, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, California's parks and useful information regarding them.The freshwater fish section seems a little lacking, covering game fish for some reason and excluding proper pages on things like pupfish, chubs, etc. Also the section on rocks/minerals. The other sections feel more complete as a portable guide.In any case, grab this book and then later buff up on the subjects you want a bit more about. It would not replace a book on any specific subject; but it could not itself be replaced by any publication for convenience, weight, and scope.
I wanted a field guide that had all the animals and plants in them just for California. I keep this in my car and have found great use of it to identifying different lizards, birds and was so happy I saw a Bobcat. Book was in good condition with an unbroken spine.
Almost every time I see some new plant or tree the trail, I try to look it up in this book. It seems to never have it. It tries to cover all the flora and fauna in a fairly slim volume. Instead of being a useful reference it just covers the very basics and makes itself not too useful by trying to be a "complete guide".
Fascinating (inexpensive) book about California natural history!I like it because I can pick it up for a few minutes and read about something specific or just choose a section at random. It has the highlights and then more detail, so it's easy to browse at random or really dig into something of interest.It's compact, so it's easy to carry in a jacket pocket or a knapsack, but I just keep it on my end table in my front rooms, so when people plop down on the sofa, it gives them something to look at!
I hike a lot in northern California. This is the perfect guide to identify birds, flowers, insects and animals that are specific to California.
