It is a story which is so complex and convoluted that it takes a historian to even begin to do it justice. Fortunately, this book's author is not only an accomplished historian, well versed in his subject, but also a gifted writer. The result is a remarkable book about an almost indescribable and incomprehensible period in the world's history.So, if you've ever wondered about the hyperinflation in Germany following the Great War (WWI), and by extension what the REAL consequences of inflation, hyperinflation, deflation and depression might be, this is the book you've been looking for. In fact, I've only read one other book which even comes close; that being `The Fiat Money Inflation in France: How It Came, What it Brought, and How It Ended' by Andrew Dickson White. But this book is much more timely, much broader in scope, much more comprehensive, and much easier to relate to our more modern times.In it, you'll learn a lot and find the answers to many puzzling questions. Among them: what caused the inflation, what were its impacts, and why it was allowed to continue; which groups and social classes fared the best, which the worst, and why; how the inflation resulted in the redistribution of wealth; what happened to landlords, shop owners, government employees, members of unions, free workers, and pensioners, as well as the middle-class; what the man or woman on the street had to do simply to survive; who prospered, who lost everything, and why; what the government did and didn't do and what the impacts were on people at all social levels, and on industry; how the hyperinflation was finally ended, why the resulting deflation and depression was worse in many ways, and why; and what those living through the deflation/depression period had then to do in order to survive and, in some cases, prosper.There is also much anecdotal evidence as to just how much misery both inflation and deflation can cause. For example: the well dressed elderly man who couldn't afford two cents (American money) for a bag of apples; the little old lady who supported herself by selling her crucifix chain one tiny gold link at a tme; the foreign students who bought rows of houses out of their allowance; the substitution of paste-board coffins for wooden ones; the life insurance policies that eventually were worth less than their annual premiums; the banks that did away with smaller savings accounts because the paper required to book them was worth more that the money in the accounts; the man who said it was better to have a prostitute in the house than the corpse of a dead baby; the beggars who, in October 1923, purportedly wouldn't accept anything smaller than a one million mark note; and finally, that even with the first "billiard" [a thousand million million] and five billiard notes being printed in November 1923, people still clamored for more.Apart from the Weimar Republic: This book is essentially a case study in inflation and its aftermath which should be of interest to anyone contemplating or concerned about the current state of America's, and the world's economic future, and the direction America is headed. In reading it, it is well to keep in mind what Gunter Schmolders articulates (pg. 248), "With inflation alone can a government extinguish debt without repayment, or wage war and engage in other non-productive activities on a large scale: it is still not recognized as a tax by the tax-payer."In any event, if you do read this book, and if you are anything like me: You'll likely conclude, as I did, that everyone talks about inflation, but no one, especially the politicians who cause it, really knows what they are dealing with or what the consequences may be.

This book’s strength is the details of how hyperinflation impacted everyday life for citizens of post-WWI Germany. It’s weakness is that it doesn’t offer much background and context - the reader is expected to already have considerable knowledge about the Weimar Republic, how it came to be, what was going on politically in it and around it, and where it was headed. This is not an introductory text.The frequent mentions of how far the mark had fallen against the dollar and the pound at various points in time are important for the historical record, but feel repetitive as a reader. The author spends about every third page throwing out lists of numbers that eventually become so large as to be meaningless.
I got this book in October 2010 based on a recommendation from either BullionVault.com or another website devoted to providing a dissenting view to mainstream economics. It was first published in 1975, just four years after the Nixon administration had severed the last tie between gold and the U.S. dollar by closing the international “gold window†and terminating the right of foreign governments to exchange dollars for gold. At that time the prospect of an American hyperinflation seemed far off, even as inflation was rising fast, and those scratchy old silent-film clips of forlorn Germans pushing wheelbarrowfuls of banknotes to the bakery to buy bread were quaint and unreal-looking.As I type these words the price of gold is US$1,818 per ounce, an increase of 4400% since 1971, and last week Switzerland, long a bastion of monetary probity, gave up on maintaining the value of its franc and pegged it instead to the moribund Euro, joining the other major currencies in a death-spiral of competitive devaluation. For those aware of what hyperinflation is, the possibility of experiencing it for ourselves is becoming ever more plausible and imminent. Adam Fergusson’s book gives a detailed picture of how hyperinflation—the death of a paper currency—played out in a modern industrial economy in the 1920s. It’s not a pretty sight.I never knew much about the Weimar hyperinflation, but assumed that it had something to do with the payment of war reparations imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. And while Fergusson’s topic is not really the cause of the hyperinflation, he does eventually come out and say that war reparations probably had nothing to do with it. Instead we see a fledgling republic facing severe social and economic problems, but whose leadership throughout remains stubbornly timid and ignorant. The leaders of both the government and its central bank, as well as newspaper editors and other leaders of opinion, were almost unanimous in asserting that the inflation had nothing to do with the runaway printing of banknotes, which they saw as an effect rather than as a cause of rocketing prices.Hyperinflation inflicts severe suffering on almost everyone except those able to profit by making bets on the collapse of the currency. The suffering, though, is very unequally distributed, and the injustice of the whole process is one of its most striking features. With a whole generation of children malnourished, women selling their bodies for a pork chop, and retired civil servants dropping dead on the street from hunger and cold, you also have farmers hoarding bumper crops, unwilling to sell for worthless paper money, and industrialists in a frenzy of factory-building to make use of cheap credit. Some of the best parts of the book are extracts from the journals and letters of housewives describing what they see around them. They witness mob violence and exchange their pianos for potatoes.In other ways though I found the book to be a dry read, and I felt that it was really addressed to people who were already students of this period of German history and had a grasp of the people and events of that time. The author assumes a knowledge of the time and place that in my case was lacking, which made the reading tougher going. I also found that his style lacked fluency, which made things harder as well. A sentence taken at random: “The uncertainties to which these postponements gave rise in large measure accounted for the wild fluctuations of the mark during the year.†Another writer would have put this is a more readable way.All of that said, this book was for me very readable because of its relevance to the events unfolding around me in the world. The enormous federal budget deficits in the United States are starting to look like the Weimar deficits, and although printing presses are no longer used to create money, dollars are being created by the trillion—a figure that became familiar in Germany in the early 1920s. When I go shopping I’m struck by how much less my money buys than even a year ago, and I fully expect that prices will only accelerate upward from here.But does that mean we’re headed for actual hyperinflation? According to writers like James Turk of GoldMoney.com and John Williams of ShadowStats.com, yes we are. Williams, a longtime statistician with the U.S. federal government, thinks it will be in the next year or two.But are our governments as timid or as deep in denial as the Weimar republic? I’ll leave that question with you. Another thing I’ll leave with you is a favorite quote from another writer, Henry Hazlitt, an American journalist on economics and finance. In 1946 he wrote these words: "Inflation discourages all prudence and thrift. It encourages squandering, gambling, reckless waste of all kinds. It often makes it more profitable to speculate than to produce. It tears apart the whole fabric of stable economic relationships. Its inexcusable injustices drive men toward desperate remedies. It plants the seeds of fascism and communism. It leads men to demand totalitarian controls. It ends invariably in bitter disillusion and collapse."If you’re looking for a refutation of Hazlitt’s points, you won’t find it in When Money Dies.

PREFACE The field of power electronics encompasses the application of fundamental concepts in several disciplines: electronic devices and circuits, signals and systems, motor drives, and control systems. A course in power electronics should tie together all these diverse fundamental concepts into a consolidated core and add the considerations of power utilization, quality, interfacing, and design issues, which are special to the field of power electronics. This book is written with the above focus in mind with a conscious effort to simplify mathematics by use of MATLAB™ and to concentrate on developing a robust understanding of the subject. This book is intended as a textbook for a course on power electronics for junior and senior undergraduate students in electrical engineering programs. It could also serve as a self-learning book for practicing engineers. The prerequisites for this book are courses on electrical circuits and systems, electronic devices and circuits, and mathematics courses in calculus, differential equations, Fourier series and transformations, and linear algebra. This book, intended for a one- or two-semester course, is divided into four parts. Part I presents an overview of the field of power electronics and the review of important mathematical concepts such as determining the average and rms values and the harmonic profile of waveforms, which are essential for understanding the rest of the chapters. Part II provides an understanding of components used in the design of power electronics circuits in the generic categories of power diodes, transistors, and thyristors. Design of current sources, inductors, and transformers illustrated using design examples. Concepts are introduced for power losses during switching transitions, and on-state and off-state of semiconductor devices. This part also introduces the driver and protection circuits for each device discussed. Part III discusses the classes of switch-mode converters: dc-dc, dc-ac, ac-dc, ac-ac, and the resonant converters. The focus is on topologies, performance measures, and performance characteristics. Part IV covers the application systems such as power factor correction, electric utility interfacing, converter control, power supply, electronic ballast, and motor drives. This part also presents practical design issues such as temperature control, selection of heat sinks, protection, packaging, shielding, and layout. Each chapter contains several, design examples to reinforce the concept learned, which illustrate the decision choices and selection of components. MATLAB® has been used extensively in these examples and also in the elaboration of the converter operation. PSPICE® simulation examples are included wherever possible. Chapters 1 and 2 provide review and focus on the characteristics of components used in power electronic circuits. Chapters 3 to 5, on semiconductor switching components, may be covered at a faster pace if students have a strong prerequisite in semiconductor devices. Chapters 6 to 11 form the core of the course. Chapters 12, 14, and 15 discuss the design requirements of some specific illustrations and, therefore, can be covered at a faster rate. Chapter 16 on thermal and other design issues, in my opinion, must not be excluded. Chapter 13 presents the development of average and statespace average models of power converter systems followed by the derivation of the transfer function. It is left to instructor's discretion whether to cover it in the undergraduate course or not. This textbook has several problems with the layout and editing that make it very difficult to understand. One of the areas that needs improvement is the diagrams and figures, which are printed with such poor quality that they are difficult to read. Also there are numerous instances were equations are printed with incorrect subscripts and supporting information; therefore, I think that this book would not be a good buy for students or anyone else for that matter.

I've been gardening for years, but new to the Houston, TX area which is a whole new ballgame due to the .. shall we say .. idiosyncrasies of its climate, especially these past few years.Since we inherited a largish backyard that no one had ever taken care of, not even planted a tree or bush, it was a challenge to start from scratch. The first year I made a ton of mistakes! Then I joined a Master Gardner class and they recommended this book, among others. For the price I find it is loaded with ideas as to how to choose plants that are compatible with the Houston area climate, will grow quickly, survive the recent harsh winters and look good.It's not a definitive book on gardening, nor does it try to be. Just lots of pictures of plant configurations that will work in various conditions. You're bound to find something for that overly-shady area, or that will work in times of draught and the hot Texas summers. Our backyard is full sun, the front is full shade so I was glad to get some new ideas for both.Nice book, looks good on the coffee table and it will give you some good ideas when you next visit the local garden center.
This book is full of gardening information and how to create excellent landscaping designs for the yard. I bought one for myself a long while back and I got this one for a son who is now interested in creating a better looking front yard.
This book is the best landscape book I've seen. I especially like it because it has numerous landscaping scenes and it details what the plants are in all of them, it doesn't show examples and then not tell you what the plants are in them. Very useful. I take this to nursery's when I visit them. I'd definitely buy it again.

This is a nice book. However, the ingredient list is extensive. I'd like much better to see ingredients that most people have on hand, or can easily get. Sapindus mukorossi berries,mango seed butter, fossilized amber essential oil? Really? No offense to Sandra.
The book I received is missing a section. It appears to be a new book, and the parts that are there are informative, but pages 115 through 127 are missing! They are not torn out, they are just missing. It's like the book was bound and put together without that section. I contacted the seller, who continues to advertise the book as "new" and in "perfect condition" and asked them to check their stock to see if they had a book that included all the pages, but they refused and blew me off, so now I'm not sure what to do. I think I will try to purchase another copy from a different book seller and hope for better results. Other than the missing pages, the book is just what I was looking for. The recipes are easy to follow and the resulting salve seems to have the pain relieving qualities I was looking for. I look forward to trying more of the recipes.
My order was fulfilled in a satisfactory manner and the info in the book is good if you have knowledge of making beauty products at home already. I would recommend ordering Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health as a companion book as well as The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! It has helped me develop and learn about the topical applications I am interested in creating and more about herbs that pair well with cannabis. This book is like the Joy of Cooking in that one recipe builds on another and you can cross reference different recipes to make something that suits exactly what you want. I have much more to learn and am looking forward to it.
Very good book, well organized and very practical. Gives a good overview of some very useful pain-relief and soothing methods of using cannabis in ways other than smoking. Only a few edible recipes, so if that is your thing, I would suggest a different book. Gave as a gift, as I do not use cannabis myself, but my friend was very happy with the pictures and content.

I already had a copy of this book and bought another for one of my graduating high school students. He's exceptionally bright and the most comic book literate student I've ever had the pleasure to teach.The encoded reader knows the X-Men beyond the movies and can use that knowledge as a foundation for grasping various elements of philosophy, clearly presented by the authors. However, knowledge of the X-Men isn't merely a sneaky tool used to teach philosophy. On the contrary, the authors do an excellent job showing the applicability of philosophy to comic book characters and issues, which in turn have implications for our world. Readers, then, can expect to learn a bit about philosophy, to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the X-Men and other Marvel mutants, and to see the relevance and value of philosophy for gaining a broader, richer, more discursive understanding of reality. Additionally, it's an enjoyable read.
An X-cellent guide to the depths of the "X-Men" comics and films, while touching upon poignant philosophical milestones within both universes.
I am not reviewing this...I just did this to submit the rating system on here. I don't think this is ever necessary!
I bought this as a Kindle e-book. Kindle for Android is great, this book isn't. I didn't need to read more than 10 pages of this book to realize it was useless. So far it has only talked about abnormality (he refers to homosexuals grouping together as "queers with queers") and the only examples of any mutants it refers to are inaccurate and based solely off the X-Men movies. So far, all the assessments have been off-base by citing the commercialized and distorted X-men movies as fact for the Marvel Universe. I am not even going to finish this book, and I already wish I could get my money back. Lesson learned: Never buy a book because of its title.
For those of us who cannot really understand Descartes or Kant or Leibnitz or Spinoza or Hobbes or Kierkegaard, much less so connect their teachings to life in this postmodern world, this book is a bridge from the past to the future. What does one do when one knows one is a comic book character (Deadpool)? What does one do when you wake up without memory, or your genes have expressed a new part of themselves overnight (Wolverine, Beast)? This book asks these questions and more.As Socrates put it, the unexamined life is hardly worth living. Read this book and one will hardly be able to keep oneself from examining!
First of all, I would like to respond to one of the reviews below:Where that reviewer asks if the book's authors read the comic books, I would ask whether he/she read the book itself. Characters that appear exclusively in the comics (like Layla Miller) have entire chapters devoted to them, and one chapter's author even denounces the movies in favor of the comics. Not sure how he/she missed that...Anyway."X-Men and Philosophy" is a must-have for Marvel fans. It explores every nook and cranny of the X-men universe and makes dozens of superb philosophical connections -- some of them expected, like the question of "what is normal and should we want it", and some more surprising, like the discussion of whether mind-reading is ethical. Just take a look at the table of contents and you'll see the wide spectrum that is explored in the book, all of it interesting.The great thing about the book is how accessible it is. It's not just for people who are interested in philosophy, but for any smart person who has an interest in X-men. I felt that I was reading a book that explored X-Men from an intellectual point of view, including science and religion as well as straight-up philosophy. It's also incredibly engaging and personal. All or most of the chapters present concepts that apply not only to mutants but to us ordinary folk as well, and there are a lot of personalized examples that help a layperson relate to and understand what's being discussed. I felt like I was reading about myself as well as Kant and Magneto.Ultimately it's a book that reaches a great balance between scholarly philosophical discussion and colloquial easy-reading, and is interesting no matter what the reader's experience with philosophy. The writing is consistently witty and the subject matter is everything an X-Men fan could want. 5 stars!
Housel, Wisnewski, and the rest have done a bang-up job of linking philosophy and the Marvel comic book series X-Men. I found that popular culture and philosophy books are a great way to get into philosophy, which is an otherwise dense (albeit eternally interesting) subject. I learned more about the X-Men than I had previously thought possible. Not only is this book a good read, but you can learn a lot. There's lots of stuff from the comics as well as the movies, and something is brought to the table for everyone.I also really liked the rendering of Dr. Wisnewski into an X-Man, which appeared in his chapter of the book.

I have Kindle Unlimited, which I would recommend all avid readers look into, and rarely buy books anymore. However, I now own this entire series because these books are addicting. Buyer beware. If you start you will probably be into buying them all.
I have enjoyed reading this series.I like the way it is written, and I like the story.I like the fact that one of the characters loves horses and loves riding, but does not want to show. And there are also characters who really enjoy showing. It is a nice balanced view that there can be more than one way to interact with horses.
I am enjoying this series very much. The characters have all made major live changing decisions. For the good. Cannot 2ait to read the whole series
As the holiday season approaches, so does the trip for the show season for Greer, Lockie, and Cam. Talia is left behind to manage Bittersweet Farm, and the fall-out from Victoria's scandalous new project. As I've come to expect from Ms. Morgenroth, the book is well written, and the story keeps evolving, leaving the reader anxious for the next installment in the series.
This whole series is an interestingly developing story, particularly about the world of horse training and rider training. It is taking a little too long to get from one installment to the next, but this one was probably the best yet. Interesting characters, good side stories, good development of conflicts and solutions of some of them. A little too much repetition, but I am waiting for the next issue!
As time for the show season comes so do the holidays. Locke,Greer and Cam are off leaving Talia behind to deal with what happens at Bittersweet Farm, and unfortunately Victoria and her scandalous new book are part of it. The story keeps evolving and does not disappoint in this well written book. Looking forward to Book 6.
Barbara Morgenroth writes for all ages. I've always loved horses and reading. The thing that impresses me about this author is that she can keep her stories interesting without explicit sex or gore. I am not narrow-minded at all, however, one of the first things that I noticed about her writing is that a ten year-old could read them without getting an early education. They show examples of positive behavior and kindness and compassion for animals that everyone needs to understand.
I'm an adult and I LOVED all 5 books! Your characters your horses your setting your description of food and meals! Such a warm and heartfelt story...I'm so sad to have finished the series and can't wait for book 6. I never want to stop reading about these wonderful horses and people.
