This book is a must for anyone who works with ggplot2. There are so many excellent graph images, that I often flip through the book when I'm trying to figure out how to create a specific plot, but may not know what it is called.
If you're ever fumbling around with data in R, you're probably familiar with the built-in, unattractive graphics. ggplot2's been increasingly recognized as a necessity for getting the most out of your imagery. It offers nearly complete control over your graphics output, building them layer by layer.I spent a solid year learning and exploring R as a graduate student before I cracked open Winston Chang's R Graphics Cookbook and started learning ggplot2's little oddities. ggplot2 is itself almost like another language within R, but it's thankfully a very simple language -- far more simple and far more flexible, I feel, than the built-in graphics options.Since you'll be printing your graphics step by step -- your boundaries before your lines; your lines separately from points; etc. -- it's easy to keep track of where every impact on the output image is occurring, allowing you to easily tweak the code and get immediate results. E.g., if annotations are not lining up where you want, or font size needs to be reduced.Chang's cookbook is separated by what feature you need to either edit or create, making it easy to jump to what the reader needs. Full sections are devoted to bar graphs, line graphs, scatter plots, data distribution graphics, customizing annotations, axes, legends, color options, and cetera. Nearly 400 pages of text and images showing different ways of customizing and displaying every piece of your graphics. It's not a book you read cover to cover -- just the resource that 'cookbook' implies, meeting the reader's specific needs.If you want to just jump into the code and see what you can do with your own data, there's no better place to start. Almost no time is devoted to unnecessary exercises or teaching you the fundamentals of the R programming language. Exploring the far reaches of the Internet is a free alternative that's likely just as helpful, but Chang's book serves as a great reference, and contains almost everything you need all in one.
This book is the third that I have recently used to get up to speed on the R language and environment. The other two texts include "R in a Nutshell" and "R in Action" (see my review). The main catalysts behind my decision to purchase another book on R was my need to get up to speed with using the language to create graphs, and that not only are plotting functions that come with base R not unified behind a common interface and set of options, there exist limitations with base R plotting functions. Of course, there are other plotting functions across the over 2500 packages that have become available to the community, but the ggplot2 package that is the focus of this book is well regarded and grown in use to become one of the most popular R packages since its release in 2005.What Chang presents in this book is extremely practical. My recent pro bono work to move a client away from Microsoft Excel to this powerful open source platform and industry standard used for both small and big data analytics is partially testament to the usefulness of this book. While I have needed to peruse R package documentation as part of this work, it is not a stretch to say that a majority of what I needed was contained in this book, either as starting points or complete examples. The explanations are very well written and organized, and the fact that all of the pertinent graphs are in color was very helpful when it came time to understanding how ggplot2 can be used for tasks such as plotting multiple lines in one plot, and the data setup that is necessary to perform these tasks, which is a bit different than base R plotting functions, but worth the effort to use since ggplot2 employs universal usage patterns.While "R in Action" might be better at easing the reader into the R language and environment, this book starts with enough R basics in its first two chapters, such as installing packages and loading data, that most will find it sufficient for getting their feet wet, and the author's introduction to ggplot2 in the appendix combined with Chapter 15 (Getting Your Data into Shape) are not only well done, but very succinct for busy professionals. After discussing bar graphs, line graphs, scatter plots, and summarized data distributions, the author presents annotations, axes, legends, and controlling the overall appearance of graphs, followed by discussions on facets, miscellaneous graphs, and outputting for presentation. If you are new to ggplot2, you will probably need to touch a majority of these chapters to some degree in order to get up to speed, but information is easy to find. Very well recommended.
Great book! The book is very well organized, which enables fast learning.The reason for missing a star:After 3 chapters, I notice that there are a lot of similarities among of the plots. It would be immensely helpful if the author added a brief introductions on ggplot: the philosophy of the developers and the common features of different geoms. To me, it works like a photoshop, things work in layers and the order of layers affect the output. An overview of ggplot is helpful is because before you plot anything, it is a good idea to have a holistic picture in mind what layers I would be needing and which is the best way to organize the layers. Recipes are easy for instant hands-on, but to figure out the principles based on discrete recipes is a demanding job for average users.Updated: in the end of the book, there is appendix A, which explains the philosophy of ggplot. -This is exactly what I wanted. I realized this after finishing the first 6 chapter. It really helps.
I have Hadley Wickham's book on ggplot2 ggplot2: Elegant Graphics for Data Analysis (Use R!), which is a great introduction to advanced R graphics. However, since that book was published in 2009, a few updates in R and ggplot2 have made some of the tricks I used for plots obsolete and I've had to refer to the online ggplot2 documentation to update my code. The R Graphics Cookbook makes this task of finding best practices for ggplot2 much easier, and provides some really concrete examples. This R Graphics Cookbook and the ggplot2 book make for a powerful combination.

After compairing this book with "The Savage Garden" by D'Amato and "Pitcher Plants of the Americas" by McPherson I think this book offers some interesting background information on the history, ecology and evolution of CPs in general that add to the other two books mentioned. It is written without too much botanical jargon while still offering good detail that is easy to follow and understand. Additionally, the book offers good information about habitats, trapping mechanisms, and features of each of the major different kinds of CPs out there. It also has lots of great photos that really add to the book. The biggest drawback this book has is the quantity and quality of cultivation and propagation information. It has some in there, but is not half as good as what is found in D'Amato's book. Better still are the "Grow Carnivorous Plants DVD series" done by Sarracenia Northwest if you main interest is learning how to grow and propagate CPs.

This book covers all the basic aspects of Carnivorous Plants from their taxonomy, through ecology, physiology and evolution to how to grow them. I would say it is the one essential text for all enthusiasts. The text is illustrated with many amazing photographs and micro-photographs. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It even makes a fascinating coffee table book for the uninitiated.
I bought this book to accompany my son's carnivorous plant collection. It was his 14th Birthday gift and this was an excellent addition to the plants that were bought.
This book is fantastic. I was looking for a book with with the ecology of carnivorous plants, their physiology, and their cultivation. I got all the information I needed. :) Great book with great pictures.
This is a collection of difficult to find, but essential information, with stunning illustrations! It is an English translation of a book which was originally published as a scientific treatis in a foreign language (German). A bit stilted, but very readable.

I read this with my 2 boys who are 11 and 9. They loved this book and the story of Shiloh. Once we would start reading at night, they didn't want to stop. They are usually pretty egger to get reading time over with, so that tells you something about this story.

I once had a dog that my dad brought home for my little brother by 8 years. He would never get me a dog no matter how I asked, but got my little brother one soon as he mentioned it. The dog imprinted on me and i took care of it. Bought its food. Played with it. Ran him. The whole nine yards. I worked hard, just like Marty, for that dog. Unfortunately, my dad forced me to get rid of him just 3 months in. Glad to see a story that resonated and turned out good.
I purchased this book for my 11 year old grandson. He needed a book to read at school when his work was finished. He is captivated by the story. Everyday he comes home from school telling what is happened in the book. He even told me that his teacher asked him to stop doing his work so fast just so he could read Shiloh. I was intrigued by the variety of reviews this book received. I've read Felice before and knew I enjoyed her writing style, her voice, and what she brings to the genre--fascinating, nuanced, yet accessible characters--but I felt "Hold Me Together" took it to a whole new level.Setting aside the story for a moment, there are a couple of technically difficult things she accomplishes in this book. The story is told exclusively from the heroine, Holly's view, yet the reader comes away with a clear sense of who the hero, Gavin, is. We understand his goals and the depth of his love...and understanding of his new bride. He knows her better than she knows herself...or dares to admit to herself. Next, Felice brings a separate personality to each brother, without putting the reader in that person's head. She does it deftly through the eyes of the heroine. Gavin, Brody, McKenna, Luke, Travis and Abel all stood out. As did patriarch Hank, and neighbor Marcie. Everyone was separate, distinct, and fully formed.The story challenges boundaries and comfort zones...and that's the fun of reading erotica, right? If you want mainstream, read mainstream. Felice takes us on Holly's journey, and gives us enough insight into her past, and Gavin, and the brothers, to make it believable and workable and utterly fascinating. Yes, she walks a fine line, and no, this is not your mother's Harlequin, but, frankly, it's a heck of a lot more compelling. This story will stick with you.
I was really torn by this book. [Potential spoilers ahead.] The premise is interesting, and the sex was often hot, and there was enough to like for me to give it three stars. Basically, it's about a husband who tells his new wife, on their WEDDING NIGHT, that he plans to share her with his brothers. But there's definitely some stuff missing. The book kind of feels like it's jumping from brother to brother. Kind of like it's just a bunch of sexual vignettes. There's some narrative from the heroine, but not enough, and what there is is confusing. And in no way am I okay with the husband springing the whole "sharing" thing with her on their wedding night. That's just wrong, no matter what his reasons are. That's like a next-level lack of trust. I'd kick him in the nuts and file for divorce, in that order. Oh, and the dad somehow figured out she's sleeping with all his sons but he had literally no indication of it, no way of knowing, other than maybe a look or something at the dinner table to clue him in. But it wouldn't tell him she's sleeping with ALL of them. That's a huge leap. And when he finds out, he turns into this weird religious zealot that's a 180 from who he was before, and most of his sons sit there like cowards. They were happy to have sex with her, but not willing to come to her defense with a "hey, this was OUR idea, not hers." Some of the brothers are complex and interesting but that really took the shine off them and made me not want to read their books.
I'm torn about how to rate this book. The writing was well done and the story unique.That said, where is it OK for a husband to tie up his wife on her wedding night, have his brothers assault her and then subject her to each of them one-on-one during the following weeks, including one brother who's into spanking and one who can only enjoy sex by raping her!!!She is supposed to accept and embrace their lifestyle because "she loves him" and wants to be part of the family! And supposedly her body responds to their repeated assaults (NOT IN REAL LIFE-TRUST ME).Has anyone ever heard of an abusive relationship. The first thing an abuser does is convince the victim that it's for their own good, and that if they don't agree, the problem is within them!This is sooo not acceptable on so many ways I truly can't begin to list them.
This is an amazing series!. You can not go wrong with some sexy sweet kinky cowboy's!. The characters in this book is fantastic!. A spunky Holly who marries one of the kinky Cameron Brothers. Six Cameron Brothers each one sexier then the next ,-Luke, Travis, McKenna, Brody, Abel, and Gavin her husband. When Holly married Gavin she knew he had a kinky side but until their wedding night she did not know how kinky!. On their wedding night Gavin ties her up then lets her know he wants to share her with his Brothers now. Can Holly handle that Gavin wants to share her or will the marriage end before it even begins?This is a super amazing book and each book in this series has been amazing!. You will so love Felice Fox's kinky cowboys!
I am intrigued by the concept not that I want to be Holly. I really liked take me for longing and the just sext series. I wanted to give this a try. I am very curious how Holly will feel when a new woman is introduced.
This is the first in her series and the one that I had started to read until it reached a point where this man, who had recently married, was going to have his wife to have sex with all his brothers. SICK, SICK, SICK
This was a difficult read for me. Hard to imagine the concept trying to be portrayed in this book.
Unless you are open minded to this kind of sex I wouldnt read it.I quit after one chapter since I dont believe in that kind of sex.
