Lots of good information to get me started in the hobby of mosaics. It’s a start. As I get further into the hobby, there are books available with more intricate patterns and ideas.
When they say beginner's guide that is exactly what they mean. The projects are very simple and not too sophisticated.
Not at all what I expected. Wanted something that explains how to start--this just barely touches that.
Good basic book as reference.
Took a bit longer to come but is a good book

Throughout, she includes little-known historical digressions, such as one about the Fenian Raids, which occurred between 1866 and 1870, when a group of Irish soldiers attempted to invade Canada from Vermont and establish an Irish republic. Husher, who has written stories and articles for the Boston Phoenix, the Randolph Herald, and other publications, provides an interesting sort of travel book: a cross between travel essays and tourist guide. Arranged by geographic area, each of 12 chapters includes a description of a location in Vermont (or near Vermont), Husher's personal memories and descriptions of the spot, and historical detail and directions. One chapter highlights the Randolph fireworks and then goes on to describe Randolph's business district by recounting the story of a series of fires and the community's reactions to them. Other chapters include descriptions of the Dowsers Hall (and its labyrinth), the Bread and Puppet Museum, and the historic sites of the Fenian Raids. It is a very personal account of Vermont and will attract visitors to and residents of Vermont who have time to read before seeking adventure. This book describes a number of fascinating ordinary places that are tucked around the state of Vermont. What makes the places fascinating is Husher's historical details- -for each place, she tells the story of how the site came to be and what made it famous. Some of the sites, like the Donohue Sea Caves are eons old, while others like the Bread and Puppet Museum were developed only recently. Some are famous, like Champ, the monster of the deep, while others are virtually unknown, like the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870.Although Husher probably didn't intend to make a statement about art, I found the juxtaposition of the state highway rest area art and the Bread and Circus Musuem quite telling. She describes how a group of artists, including some famous ones, in the 1970s created a series of sculptures to be displayed to ordinary people at rest stops. Since this was to be people's art, it was made in ordinary media such as concrete. Funny enough, even though people drive by these creations every day and walk right past them at the rest stops, nobody seems to notice them, and the concrete is rotting away in the elements. Is this a tragedy? For whom? It seems to me that if the art is so unengaging that people don't notice it even when it's placed right in front of their faces, it's not art at all but a sad Emperor's new clothes kind of waste of space. In contrast, other art described in this book, such as the puppets at the Bread and Puppet Circus are so compelling and interesting, that they draw people in to see them in such a far-off corner of the state as Glover. Likewise, the sculpted granite headstones in the Hope Cemetery in Barre were created by artists who work in a medium that would last for generations. That's because they were doing their art on commission, responding to the wishes of their patrons and communicating through their art to their entire community. The abandoned highway art seems more like taunt the audience- -give them something incomprehensible and ugly, but since the audience won't appreciate it anyway, don't bother to make it last.

The creative insights in the book are wonderful and her wry comments about people, places and things are worth their weight in Vermont granite. I have been to several of the sites written about,(before reading this book)and have an extended appreciation of them now. Her style of writing makes her subject matter larger than the sum of it's parts. Enjoy !!
Have been to Vermont many times but now I'll have to return. The author did a very good job of showing the much lesser known history of this great state. Deserves a revisit!
Got this out of the lending library for free. Some of the descriptions were a bit too detailed- I guess I was bored and had no use for a lot of the information in the book.

It is a set of brilliant essays on art and life that incidentally describes unusual landmarks in and near Vermont.Husher sees things that most people miss. She makes connections. She recognizes odd juxtapositions. She awaits surprises and is not disappointed.In this book the ordinary becomes utterly fascinating, and the eccentric becomes the norm.It's fun. It's beautifully written. It has a lot to say about art, and it is a work of art itself.
This is a well-written, relaxing read that takes pleasure in common things. Far from being a guidebook in the usual sense, it guides the reader into a state of mind that helps him view his own world with more interest, even if he never visits Husher's Vermont.

I love to bake and to have choices, and this book allows me to do both. There is a lot of tips and helpful hints, plus the “scaled down equipment†that you will need. There are sweet and savory recipes, so many to choose from, I can’t wait to start baking. If you love to bake and don’t want to make “full†recipes, I would suggest on getting this cookbook.
I received this book as a gift as I had high hopes for small batch baking. I have now made a number of the recipes most of which were not satisfactory in my opinion. I am NOT a novice baker, I have baked for years and am used to complicated recipes as well as simple. Thus I thought these should work but each one I have tried I questioned the measurements.for example, the vanilla cupcakes and the strawberry buttercream layer cake. Great ideas, poor in application. Both of the cakes turned out incredibly dense and greasy I believe she adds way too much butter as neither turned out light and fluffy and there was an excess of grease, especially around the cupcakes. The frostings also were loaded with butter and did not hold up light and fluffy like frosting should. I might expect something like this in an alternative ingredient recipe but this is using standard baking ingredients, all which I used and followed her instructions to the letter, only to have disappointing results. The flavors were ok but nothing to write home about.I think the people who have reviewed the book haven't made the recipes at all thus the reviews are misleading to those who would want the purchase the book. Had I known these things I known these things I would not have put it on my gift idea list.I am scared to try any other cakes or what are supposed to be fluffy baked goods because she will probably want nearly a cup of butter for a small batch!Now, the scone recipe was decent and the blueberry muffins I would make again, but I am hesitant about just about anything else as I've had too many fails vs successes and this is not, I repeat to user error as I am not new to baking.I also have now tried two of the biscuit recipes and they were good, no problems but due to the experience of greasy everything else I always cut out at least 1 TBS of butter and they worked out just fine. Besides, on biscuits you add more butter once cooked anyways!And, if you like baking books with actual photos then this is also not for you, you would think in this type of book photos would be had but there are none other than the ones at the beginning of each chapter. Huge disappointment.So if you are interested, save yourself the trouble and find another small batch book or just try from her blog but do so with great caution and concern. OR try halving a recipe yourself, you'd probably get better results than her talking about how expertly she did this when in fact, its quite horrible.Would I recommend the book? No.

I'm loving small batch cooking and baking and this is a wonderful cookbook! I've already tried two recipes and they both came out perfectly. I really like the tips at the end of the recipes. Can't wait to try more recipes!
This is a great cookbook if you are baking for one or two. I bought a 6 inch pie pan at the same time I bought the book. Several of the recipes can use small standard size pans, but the pie pan is hard to find where I live. If I was giving this book as a gift I would give it with the 6 inch pie pan.
Love the recipes. Already made the orange bundt cake, both of the cheesecake recipes and the cinnamon rolls. I was surprised that the small size recipes tasted so good and pretty easy to make as well. I've started baking again because I no longer have so much left over.
This is the perfect book for small batch baking for two. No worrying about trying to cut recipes in half ,this book is perfect. Recipes are simply written, instructions well explained. Would recommend this book .

They are so easy to follow. I really appreciate the fact that everything is cut down, which makes cooking for two a breeze.I highly recommend this book and have been telling everyone about it!

About the Author
John Steptoe was born in Brooklyn. From early childhood, he drew pictures and told stories with them. He started work on Stevie, his first picture book, when he was sixteen, and Stevie was published three years later to outstanding critical acclaim. Since then, he has written and illustrated many successful books for children. John Lewis Steptoe, creator of award-winning picture books for children, was born in Brooklyn on September 14, 1950 and was raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of that borough. He began drawing as a young child and received his formal art training at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. He was a student in the HARYOU-ACT Art Program and instructed by the highly recognized African American oil painter, Norman Lewis. He also studied at the Vermont Academy, where he was instructed by the sculptor, John Torres, and William Majors, a painter acclaimed by the Museum of Modem Art for his etchings and print-making.His work first came to national attention in 1969 when his first book, Stevie, appeared in its entirety in Life magazine, hailed as "a new kind of book for black children." Mr. Steptoe, who had begun work on Stevie at the age of 16, was then 18 years old.In his 20-year career, Mr. Steptoe illustrated 15 more picture books, ten of which he also wrote. The American Library Association named two of his books Caldecott Honor Books, a prestigious award for children's book illustration: The Story of Jumping Mouse in 1985 and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters in 1988. Mr. Steptoe twice received the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration, for Mother Crocodile (text by Rosa Guy) in 1982, and for Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters.While all of Mr. Steptoe's work deals with aspects of the African American experience, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters was acknowledged by reviewers and critics as a breakthrough. Based on an African tale recorded in the 19th century, it required Mr. Steptoe for the first time to research African history and culture, awakening his pride in his African ancestry. Mr. Steptoe hoped that his books would lead children, especially African American children, to feel pride in their origins and in who they are. "I am not an exception to the rule among my race of people," he said, accepting the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award for Illustration, "I am the rule. By that I mean there are a great many others like me where I come from."Mr. Steptoe frequently spoke to audiences of children and adults about his work. He was the 1989 winner of the Milner Award, voted by Atlanta schoolchildren for their favorite author.John Steptoe died on August 28, 1989 at Saint Luke's Hospital in Manhattan, following a long illness. I first heard this little story when it as read by a teacher during a three-month silent meditation retreat, and it's a beautiful exploration of compassion in action and of non-grasping. Anyone doing tonglen practice might find it very much to the point. And with its pictures, it's lovely for children.I'm not sure how a Native American might feel about yet another appropriation by white people of a Native American story, but I am grateful for the depth of the story might have for all human beings.

In the days when few read and there were no books, the wise elders told these stories to help children understand about the challenges life would bring to them. Later, these tales were collected and now they can be shared; a great and abiding gift.
"Jumping Mouse, I give you a new name..." I found this wonderful book by complete accident when I was at a POW WOW in Indio, California. It was in soft cover and I had to have it in hard cover. How I adore the black and white drawings which give another dimension to the meaning of the story. Jumping Mouse had courage, hope and boundless compassion that transformed him into a creature he never thought he would ever become. But then, he did not set out on the journey thinking he would receive a reward. He simply wanted to see the Far Off Land. I intend to purchase more hard covers of this book to give as gifts to my friends. Truly, one of the most magical stories I have ever read in my life.

John Steptoe's 40-page illustrated version of The Story of Jumping Mouse is a Native American legend of a Magic Frog who gives his jumping legs to a discouraged young mouse that had recently set out on a quest -- a journey to a far-off land. The frog also tells Jumping Mouse to remember three words -- "never lose hope." Rejuvenated and able to travel much more quickly, Jumping Mouse continues on his journey. On the way he encounters a fat mouse who invites him to stay with him the rest of his life in a safe haven. But Jumping Mouse is determined to continue his quest and later discovers his acquaintance is eaten by a snake. When his journey brings him to a vast prairie Jumping Mouse is surprised to meet a lonely buffalo just standing there. Upon inquiry, he learns that the buffalo is blind, so Jumping Mouse imitates Magic Frog by giving his eyes sight to a blind buffalo and the buffalo leads him across the prairie on his back. At the end of the prairie the buffalo can go no further and Jumping Mouse recalls Magic Frog's words, "never lose hope" and thus journeys animal that identifies himself as a fox that can't smell. Jumping Mouse tries his magic once more and is able to give the fox his nose. The fox, delighted at his cure, accompanies Jumping Mouse through the forest. But as the forest ends at the foot of a mountain and the fox can not go any further, Jumping Mouse goes to sleep in despair in the face of this seemingly hopeless barrier to his goal. Suddenly Magic Frog appears again and tells Jumping Mouse to jump as high as he can and remember his words, "never lose hope." He gathers his courage, leaps as high as he can, and discovers himself soaring over the mountain as Magic Frog below shouts out Jumping Mouse's new name -- "Eagle." This is a wonderful story to teach children about Hope, Determination, Sacrifice, Hardship, and Compassion.

The introduction is quite helpful in orienting the user to the land and people, religion, early history, colonial era, and subsequent periods. More than 600 alphabetically arranged entries cover significant persons, ethnolinguistic groups, events, cultural and societal aspects, and political parties. Although most of the entries are brief, several on leaders and parties are more expansive. Information is current; for example, the 2010 Constitution has an entry. Cross-references in bold and see also references in capitals enhance use. An extensive, well-organized, and current bibliography (including websites), mainly in English, adds value. I read this whole book in one sitting, and it has been decades since I have done that. Suchard explains how to get started as a mentalist, which is ten minutes of meditation every day, plus learning as much as you can about related fields. He lists five or six books that he found helpful, and I am going to buy and read every one. And I am going to start my meditation tomorrow. After reading his book, I feel more excited about my life than I have in a long time. In addition, I have just ordered from Amazon two introductory books about getting your chakras working on all cylinders. I will be buying more.
Fascinating story. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars because most of the effects rely on Suchards natural talents rather than trainable skills, as was implied in the promo for the book. However, with a bit of concentration and application much benefit has come as a result of the ideas contained therein. You owe it to yourself to check it out.
Lior Suchard shows us quite a few amazing feats. He makes us wonder about the powers of the mind. And that is what his purpose is, to get us out of our behaviour on autopilot and make us wonder again. He's not interested in teaching us how to do what he does, but in showing us that there is more to a human mind than most people take for granted. His book is an invitation to the reader to start exploring his/her own mind and changing the course of his/her life as a consequence. The message is that people can be much more creative than they usually are. In this sense it is not only an entertaining but also a challenging book.
The book is fun and makes a very entertaining read; the title is a little misleading in that 90%of the book is about Mr. Suchard's successful (and often remarkable) career as a mentalist, with maybe 10% dedicated to some exercises that may, or may not, 'unlock the power of your mind.' Though the book fails as a tutorial, or even as a reference to the techniques of mentalism, it is nevertheless such a fun read that it's well worth the time spent with it.
Great read...this book will leave you believing you are capable of all your dreams. Thank you Lior for your inspiring work and incredible positivity and demystifying what you do and how you do it. You show us that what/how you do what you do is nothing to be feared but reveared. Bravo!
While the stories in the book are a bit entertaining that's really all this book was. A bunch of stories about Lior's shows and experieces traveling around the globe
It's more a "look how awesome I am" than a book to learn how to unlock the mind.
This was a fun book to read, and also learned allot about how much more I can use me "full brain". The book is written for anyone to read very lighthearted and so refreshing, content should be practiced and taken seriously but if you are in sales, HR, or customer service great information to be used to help you read your customers become better at what you do.

I bought this for summer time practice for my eight year old. It has seventeen fun songs. The music is slightly less challenging than the regular lesson books which makes it ideal for self-study. She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain, Oh! Susanna, Home on the Range, Are You Sleeping, Good Night Ladies, This Old Man are some of the more popular songs.
Kids really love this book. You can't go wrong with these pieces.
