In a detailed account, it follows the beginning of the universe as we know it to the final and inevitable end of everything. Clearly articulated and free of the complexities of astrophysics, it was very enthralling. The first half of the book was great!! Unfortunately, the narrative degenerated into anthropocentrism in the last half of the book and spoiled the earlier objectivity of the book.
To be able to make the unknown and the infinite into the knowable and measurable seems impossible. Deep Time does the impossible in a readable look at physics and cosmology. Darling traces the events that were likely to have occurred during the Big Bang through the long stretches of the time that is our past, our present and our future into entrophy and the end. I was in awe at every turn of the page, every turn of events. A book for all who stand in wonder beneath the stars.
Even though the language of physics is foreign to me, the Genesis story as told through the life of a proton created " in the beginning " was very inspiring. As a person of faith, my concept of a Creator God was reaffirmed and deepened.Larry Roberts
Very good service from apparently an excellent vendor. The book itself is "deep" but the prose is lucid. It provides obviously thoughtful learning to a provocative subject in science.
Still the all-time standard for the lay person.
It's a journey... literally through space and time. The most interesting and enjoyable angle captivating your imagination from page 1 all the way to the end. Beautiful use of language. It feels very much like a novel. Must Read!!!!
While I am fascinated by the subject, I have been unlucky in my last two reads about cosmology and the physics of cosmology. Both Black Holes, Wormholes, and Time Machines and the book I just finished today, Deep Time: The Journey of a Particle from the Moment of Creation to the Death of the Universe and Beyond by David Darling were plodding reads that left me feeling not the least bit enthused to read more on this subject ever again. Books that I do not like take me a long time to finish: Deep Time, at a mere 159 pages, took me nine days. I do wonder why I punish myself with books such as this, that draw me in by the titles and then disappoint me so thoroughly by page one.I am not a scientist or physicist, yet Darling did not talk over my head, unlike Jim Al-Khalili in spite of his claim that he wouldn't in Black Holes. Darling told the story, and a very boring story, of the interstellar travels of a single particle throughout space from the Big Bang to the eventual end of the entire universe. The first hundred pages were agonizingly slow and totally uneventful. I'd like to think that a particle's journey through billions of years of space would seem more interesting, but reading about various particles' collisions and physical transmogrifications tested my patience. Through the miracles of physics, the particle eventually became gold, which was mined by man and then found itself as coating for the recorded disc that was placed aboard the satellite Voyager II. So only when that satellite was launched--in 1977--was there a context that I could relate to and which didn't seem so abstract. When Darling surpassed present time and wrote about the death of the universe, trillions and trillions of years in the future (for example, one octillion AD) I perked up and was moved to turn the pages for a reason other than I *had to*. To be a witness during the ultimate cosmic meltdown would be a sight to behold, and Deep Time made it possible through some dazzling cosmic Armageddons.Darling wrote in a conversational style which incorporated many sentence fragments. Had I attended a lecture I would have encountered such an oral style, but I found it rather inelegant to read new paragraphs that started (and ended) by only the subject of a sentence. The subject. Which is how Darling often wrote. Which drove me absolutely crazy.I will stick to TV documentaries on cosmology, as I have not been able to get my head around the last two books I have read on the topic. Surely someone out there has written a space history for nonscientists that is *interesting*.
It's not very often that I would describe a book as beautiful, it's even more rare that I would use this word to describe a science book, yet it really is the only word that describes this book. The auther obviousely views the universe and all it contains with much admiration and this pours from every page of the book. He paints a picture with words that leaves the reader with a lump in the throat and tear in your eye, and genuinely convinces you that the universe is not just amazing but is a thing, a living thing, of great beauty.I really would recommend this book to everybody - it's probably my favourite book of all time.

Like a lot of people, I first became aware of Lone Wolf and Cub by watching Shogun Assassin. I was working in a movie store, and a regular customer would talk about martial arts and samurai movies with me regularly, and one day, he came in to lend me his copy of Shogun Assassin. I’d never seen anything like it before, and fell in love with the character of Ogami Itto, who may very well be the original one-man army character. I looked up as much info as I could about it, and found out that it was actually an edited version of portions of a series called Lone Wolf and Cub, which was based on a very long comic series. I set out to read the comics in no time, and quickly became addicted. About 10 years has passed since I finished the series, and now that these huge collections have been released, I’m going though it again to see how it holds up. I’m happy to say that this comic, which started all the way back in 1970(!) very much holds up, and a lot of comic artists and writers could learn a thing or two by reading just one story in any of these volumes.Ogami Itto was the shogun’s executioner, and has chose to live the path of an assassin, offering his sword and son, Daigoro, to anyone willing to pay for his services. Itto has more than enough skill to deal with the most feared foes, armed with his dotanuki sword and expert tactics. He does whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it means appearing weak. One case has him allowing himself to be captured by the enemy, dismantling them from the inside out once he’s in their lair. Another has him entering a prison with some of the toughest criminals out there, getting unceremoniously beaten, then allowing himself to get put on death row after he kills a few of the guys that beat him after he gets the info he needs. The funny thing is, with all these dangerous situations, the guy’s rarely in any serious trouble because he’s just -that- good. This first volume of the Lone Wolf and Cub Omnibus contains 16 chapters in the series, with each chapter showing why Ogami Itto is probably the baddest fictional dude to grace any form of media. As much as I could go on about how awesome the brutal fights are in this series, I think that everyone gets that by now. Fights are over very quickly in Lone Wolf and Cub, making you wonder what happened to manga where many fights are drawn out over the course of several books in some cases, usually just to showcase how powerful characters are, or worse- letting characters “power up†over several chapters. Goseki Kojima does a fantastic job showing how skilled Itto is with any weapon in just a couple of panels, never wasting a single space with unnecessary flash. Kazoo Koike’s writing is top-notch, and there is some very clever stuff in here. Ogami Itto isn’t a mindless killing machine- he has reasons for doing things the way he does them, and the majority of what he does in this volume is all planned out in advance. There were a lot of times I found myself smiling because of how tricky something was.To be completely honest, I loved every single chapter here except for one which felt like a short filler episode. But even that one wasn’t bad by any means. It just wasn’t anywhere near as good as the others. Some of my favorite were:-Chapter 5: Suio School Zanbato. Ogami Itto has a duel with a high ranking samurai, even getting a written note from the guy stating that he agreed to the duel. After dispatching him, the samurai’s men seek revenge on Itto, planning to ambush him on horses.-Chapter 8: Wings to the Birds, Fangs to the Beast. Probably one of the more well-known chapters here. Itto and Daigoro head to a hot spring that’s ruled by outlaws at the moment, who’ve taken the nearby village hostage. Itto does a very noble thing to save a prostitute, and deals with the outlaws in a way that only he can. Having a baby cart that’s full of built-in weapons sure helps.-Chapter 9: The Assassin’s Road. This is the one chapter where we learn something about Ogami Itto and Daigoro, going over part of what led them to this path they walk. One of the duo’s most memorable moments comes at the end of the chapter during a duel where Itto bows his head down while dashing at his opponent, revealing Daigoro on his back wearing a mirror on his head to reflect the sunlight at the opponent, blinding him.-Chapter 12: Tragic O-Sue. This is basically a Daigoro story. With his dad sick, resting in a small temple somewhere (and having some pretty gnarly nightmares about demons), Daigoro is left to fend for himself after he gets imprisoned by a high ranking samurai’s family. The master of the house wonders if Daigoro is the son of the infamous Lone Wolf and Cub assassin he’s heard so much about.-Chapter 16: Half Mat, One Mat, A Fistful of Rice. Finally, we end the book with the first opponent who actually stands a chance against the assassin. A highly skilled samurai turned sideshow attraction takes the father and son out for a meal after accidentally almost harming Daigoro. He doesn’t like the path that Ogami Itto is on, and wishes for him to stop, for his son’s sake. Itto refuses, for both him and his son have chosen it. As a result, he chooses to stop the former executioner himself in a duel. This leads to a very intense moment where the two stare down each other, and visualize several possibilities of what’s going to happen when they make their moves. And keep in mind those are only 5 of my favorites, and there are at lest 5 others I could go on about! What are you waiting for? This is a crazy-good deal for so much of the story. My only issues are that it would be so much better if the volumes were in hardcover format, because the paper covers do start to wear down quickly due to how much content there is, and I’m still not happy that they reversed everything. Yes, this reads like a standard US/European comic, from left to right, and as a result, all the artwork is reversed too. Dark Horse has a reason for it, and it’s not a very good one. Maybe in another couple of decades they’ll finally put it out as it was originally published? Those minor complaints aside, nothing should keep you from buying this book.
Lone Wolf & Cub Omnibus Volume 1A very nice thick manga from Dark Horse Manga, over 700 pages of pure black and white action, intrigue, and self exploration in this book. This is my first manga, I believe. The closest I ever came to this type of stuff was Scott Pilgrim and SharKnife, the latter being absolutely deplorable. The story revolves around a Ronin out to atone or avenge the death of his wife, carrying his son with him. Why he has his son at all is revealed halfway through the book and is one of the more powerful scenes so I won't go through it now with you.Basically, he's an assassin. He often uses his son and puts him in grave danger to meet his mission, but his reasoning is "Even a Wolf Cub is still a Wolf", seeing as his son is strong and can take care of himself. This is absolutely brilliant and I for sure will be buying volume two in this series. Lots of action, lots of neat problem solving and unique murders and stories to keep you guessing each time. It did end softly with the last two stories but 98% of the book is gold.Definitely check it out, even if you've never read this sort of thing (like myself), you might like it.
The all time best story ever! Everyone must buy it. Everyone should own it. It should be required reading. Kozure Okami. The story of a masterless ronin on the road to hell in a never ending quest for blood and vengeance. The caveat: his toddler child in tow. The endless waves of ninja that assault them, fall victim to his unquenchable blade. The story starts off disjointed, but don't give up. Read them all. It is worth it. At times heart wrenching and others soaked with the lust for blood. Itto Ogami, master of the suio-ryu style of swordplay, has resigned himself and his child to hell. In an effort to avenge the death and destruction of everything he had and loved by the pitiless Yagyu. Which is odd since most Japanese today would probably say the Yagyu, especially Junbei, were looked on in a favorable light. History is different than poetic license, though. Anyhow, extremely good story, don't stop at issue 1.
Koike and Kojima’s Lone Wolf and Cub feels of a different era of manga, and that is largely because it is. First released in 1970s, translated and re-released by Dark Horse Manga in the late 1990s and early 2000s, this Manga gives several of the Lone Wolf and Cub stories. Unlike most later manga, Lone Wolf and Cub is largely episodic, and while details about the backstory are left like bread crumbs, this does not have to be read in order. The violence, while not super graphic by modern adult manga standards, was fairly graphic for the time, and nudity is common, although it is not portrayed in the modern comic--manga or "western"--hyper-sexualized manner. The art is stunning and very naturalistic. It seems to mimic figure work from more traditional Japanese sources and the highly archetypical Edo-period feudal Japan is rendered convincingly, although I am not entirely sure how accurate this is to the real world Edo Japan. The plots do get repetitive although the art does carry me through. Part of the problem is that later Manga and Samurai stories draw a lot from the Koike and Kojima which makes it feel less fresh than it did originally. Kazuo Koike's plots and character though work remarkably well for how compacted his stories often are. While I would suggest lingering with this one instead of binge reading it, it's an excellent early manga.

Amazon.com Review
When Henry and his friend agree to go to Fitchburg to see the country, they each choose very different methods of travel, based on their very different approaches to life. This charming little story illustrates through minimal text and fantastically stylized paintings the concepts Henry David Thoreau spent his life trying out. While Henry (the storybook Henry is a bear) collects flowers to press, strolls on stone walls, finds bird nests, and gathers blackberries, his friend toils and sweats to earn enough money for the train fare to Fitchburg. With subtle nods at Thoreau and his real-life pals Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne (Henry's friend cleans out Mrs. Thoreau's chicken house, moves the bookcases in Mr. Emerson's study, and pulls weeds in Mr. Hawthorne's garden), D.B. Johnson cleverly introduces young readers to these important historical figures. No moralizing here, just a gentle, humorous look at the different paths each person may choose in life. Johnson chose a passage in Thoreau's Walden (the passage is included in the informative author's note) as inspiration for this delightful picture book, which Thoreau himself would probably be proud to read. From Publishers Weekly
Freelance illustrator Johnson models his striking debut on a passage from Walden, in which Thoreau advocates journeying on foot over buying a ticket to ride. Henry, a brown bear attired in a brick-red duster and wide-brimmed sun hat, is a kinder, gentler fellow than his cantankerous inspiration. His ursine friend, wearing town clothes and conspicuously toting a pocket watch, makes plans to meet him in Fitchburg, a town 30 miles distant. Spreads contrast the pair's respective travel strategies: on the left, Henry's friend does chores for unseen Mrs. Alcott, Mr. Hawthorne and Mr. Emerson to earn train fare; right-handed pages picture a leisurely Henry examining flora and fauna, admiring the view and excavating a honey tree as he strides toward his destination. At the end of the summer day, "His friend sat on the train in a tangle of people./ Henry ate his way through a blackberry patch." Johnson inventively demonstrates Thoreau's advice with kaleidoscopic illustrations in variegated colors and gently skewed perspectives that weigh fast-paced urban existence against an unmaterialistic life in the woods. Both bears make it to Fitchburg, but Henry's friend wears a blank stare, in contrast to Henry's bright-eyed, curious gaze. Johnson implies what money can and cannot buy, and encourages slowing down to experience nature. With graceful understatement, he presents some complicated ideas assuredly and accessibly. Ages 4-8. I've loved the writings of Henry David Thoreau since I was in my late teens, so I was very excited to read about Henry Hikes to Fitchburg when it was published in 2000. I bought the book immediately and read it as soon as it arrived. Not only was I not disappointed, I felt as if I had been given a chance to re-experience parts of Walden in a new way. D.B. Johnson takes a one-paragraph passage from Walden and extrapolates it into a beautifully illustrated story that brings to life Thoreau's point -- the journey is its own reward. In this picture book Henry and his friend are both bears, dressed in 1840s New England clothing. The illustrations tell the story of the tedium of working for wages versus the enjoyment of nature. I especially like the illustration which shows Henry crossing the Sudbury River. Highly Recommended.
I find this book to have a good solid moral foundation and a decent flow to the overall story. The illustration in this book is top-notch and love looking at it. My son loves it as well. I wasn't sure if the story would be boring to him, but it is not. He asks me to read this to him for bedtime. Whether you read Henry David Thoreau back in the day, or not, it is still a good book and I would recommend it to a friend.
Best children's book to introduce the ideas of a great American author, Henry David Thoreau.
I'm simple-minded and easily addled, so Henry's simple approach to getting to Fitchburg reminds me that it's not all bad to leave some of the technical complexities to solve themselves, and to travel light, examining the rewarding beauties and curiosities of nature along the way, instead of speeding headlong to a prosaic goal, where we'll likely spend at least 10% of our time waiting for something or someone.
This is a fantastic book, based on the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Great for kids and adults alike.
With a wonderful art style, this book presents an excellent story that my kids love to this day, and can be read and reread with the same enjoyment each time. It’s a great gift for new parents, and I highly recommend it.
Don Johnson's clever book contrasting Henry's smell-the-roses approach to life with his friend's more conventional idea about the value of efficiency would make a good addition to any child or school's library. Based on a quote by Henry David Thoreau, the book is a welcome antidote to the plethora of books aimed at the aspiring "Tiger Mom" market. The illustrations in the author's distinctive cubistic style lend an almost otherworldly and inviting element to the story. My wish for every child of high-pressure, well-meaning helicopter parents is that they have a relative or friend who will read "Henry Hikes to Fitchburg" to them at an early and impressionable age.
Bought it for school but it's a nice children's book with local history for me.

Of course this list can't be complete (and now it is twenty years old) but it is still a great place to start for a survey of horror literature. For those of us who take horror literature seriously, this is one of the essential nonfiction books to have - along with Danse Macabre, On Writing Horror, and Lovecraft's Supernatural Horror in Literature. This is a great resource to read the masters themselves talking about their heroes and what makes good literature. Not only do we have essays ABOUT Poe and Lovecraft - we have essays BY Poe and Lovecraft, along with Stephen King, Harlan Ellison, etc. For a genre that produces so much bad writing, it is invaluable to have a guide to point us toward the good stuff. Now, of course, this list isn't exhaustive. There are many titles that are not included (which is why the book has a sequel). Tastes vary, so I'm not necessarily a fan of EVERY title selected. Also, to be original, some contributors select titles that are just NOT horror. (I think that most horror fans agree that the horror of Johnny Got His Gun is not the type of horror we are talking about here.) Fortunately, the books are listed chronologically, with no attempt to compare their relative merits.
A decent collection in which even the more widely read horror fan will encounter new and interesting works. The reviews range from the erudite and entertaining to the dopey and dull. Some authors know how to review a book; others do not. Again, every horror fan will have one or more "but-they-didn't-include" objections (mine: Meyrick's the Golem), but unless you're prepared to pay for a thousand-page doorstopper, this is probably as good as it gets. Good enough, in fact that I intend to purchase the companion volume.
This book is an amazing list of horror books with comments from various horror authors who review/comment on the books in the list. You not only get to find out which books are considered classics and/or noteworthy but gain insights into each book/collection from masters of horror/fantasy/sci-fi.This book is like a key that unlocks a whole other realm of possibilities and I just had to put in a 5 star review upon seeing this on amazon again.Check out the other more lengthy reviews for more details.
Great introduction to early horror stories. Great to find out what authors you like to read to see who they enjoy reading or what story inspired them to write. Great refence book...a must for any horror fan!
If your new to horror or just want to find some good recommendation definitely pick this up. Not only does give a list and reviews by authors of their favorites but there's also a list recommendation from way back to just a few years ago. Definitely worth it.
crapcrapcrap. i mean come on-ok, this book is sometimes interesting but the books it cites and reviews are not scary. so far at this books suggestion i have read 1. haunting of hill house (decent but not real scary) 2. arabian nightmare-boring as sh%t 3. october country (while this book is the most interesting of the 3-and i still have not read most of it-but what i have read is not scary) and 4. the cellar-interesting to a point but still not scary and the ending is lame. it also mentions salems lot which i read before and wanted to shoot stephen king for being so unbelievably dull(but tried to overcome this by remembering that i loved the shining and rose madder). anyway, not a fan of this book so far.
This is a fantastic resource. I am working on assembling a reading list for a book club themed around the history and evolution of horror. While Supernatural Horror in Literature can do a good job carrying my into the 1930's, this takes me on the same journey but up into the 1980's. I can fill out a list from the last few decades on my own.Several of these essays sold me on whether or not I would find a book compelling, and many convinced me to give some books a chance. Some of these made me downright itchy to read. And some of these books are criminally out of print and unavailable for a reasonable price. My only significant regret is that I will not be able to fit more on the reading list for the book club, while simultaneously my own list has received significant fattening.
This updated version of the 1988 Bram Stoker Award winner is appealing for several reasons. First, it's a modern classic in horror scholarship, a survey of horror literature spanning fifteen centuries, several genres, and a plethora of authors. Second, there's the thrill of reading great writers' thoughts about their favorite authors--Stephen King on Robert Marasco, Peter Straub on King, and Ed Bryant on Dan Simmons among others. Third, it's basically a big list of good books. The 100 entries combined with an extensive list of recommended titles (now updated through 1997) have enriched my reading for years. Plus, I'm always gratified when knowledgable people reel off their recommendations--their picks send me scurrying to used bookstores in search of new treasures. In their introduction, Messrs. Jones and Newman express their hope that the book is "...informative and fun," also stating that it "should offer a guide for the relative newcomer to the subject, but also some meat for the veteran afficionado. We hope we've succeeded in giving a working overview of an often maligned field of literature." I, for one, think they've achieved their goal--Horror: 100 Best Books is a worthwhuile addition to library of any horror maven, a useful, entertaining work that belongs on the shelf next to books like King's Danse Macabre, Winter's Faces of Fear, Skal's The Horror Show and Wiater's Dark Thoughts on Writing.

So many possible meanings given for each number set, it reminded me of that old psychic joke; "He could be short, but maybe he was tall...he's definitely blonde, but could also have dark hair". Your numbers could mean 5 different things. There are better resources out there.
A very in depth guide to understanding messages your angels and guides are giving to you in the form of numbers. I really like that it gives you flexibility to explore more complex number combinations. Think of Doreen Virtues "Angel Numbers" on steroids!
I wish this boo had a preview because I wouldn't have bought it. it was not what It markets like a reference book, but it is more of a self-help book. Not happy with it.
Love this book. Its a great resource and offers much more in depth info then other books I have on the subject. I would recommend this.
This author has written very interesting books & mefitations. I have most of her meditations, so relaxing.
"The more you work with the numbers the more they will work for you" I totally agree and enjoy this book. I recommend it to those who are curios and open to receive what comes and want to learn the language of spirit in matter.
Been seeing a lot of number combinations and this book is a great reference.
What a fun book!! I'm an intuitive neurologist and teach on these subjects and I l9vr how this book literally shares in black and white, what I've been sharing for years!! Beautiful!!
