Before getting into this book, you might want to have at least some high-level overview of CUDA.The authors explain not only how to program in CUDA but also how to get the maximum performance out of the hardware. Issues such as branch divergence, uncoalesced memory, etc. are beautifully explained by means of coding examples. The authors also explain how to use NVIDIA profiling tools to assess the performance of your programs.On the other hand, I was somewhat surprised that the book goes deep into the Fermi (2.x) and Kepler (3.x) architectures, but has no mention of the latest Maxwell (5.x) architecture. I guess that's because the authors use Tesla GPUs (not the usual GeForce GT/GTX card), but anyway the code is portable across devices.I used a GeForce GTX 750 Ti and this required some minor adaptations. Since my card had only 2GB of memory, in those examples where the authors allocate 3 vectors of 1GB each, I simply ran out of memory. The fix was to use a smaller vector size, and things ran smoothly again. Also, since my card was a Maxwell, I used nvcc -arch=sm_50 to compile the code samples. Some minor warnings were easy to fix.Recommended for the serious/advanced programmer.
Very pleased with this. I use it along with the book by Sanders & Kandrot. I get to write working code for all the concepts. The diagrams are very helpful. The instructions for how to set up your system are so good that even though the book is for Linux I had no trouble using Windows instead. If you are a Windows user I would encourage you to still buy this book. Once you get into the subject the OS makes no difference. I appreciate how they provide code to verify and test what you are doing. There is a lot of discussion about optimization and you learn a lot experimenting. It is becoming one of those books that I'm marking with tons of notes and looking like an old shoe.
Before I buy a book I usually read the Introduction so I can figure out what audience the book is made for and whether it might be a good fit for me. In the introduction of this book, it says (among other possible audiences) that the book does not assume 'copious amounts of experience in C programming'. I'd say that was stretching it a little bit since it begins using pointers and bitwise operations in the second chapter. That said, as a relative newcomer to C programming (having used PHP, Java, and Python previously), I did not understand what those things were so it took a bit of learning on the side. I found that what worked for me was to grab a C Programming book, read a couple chapters into it to get a basic understanding, and then reference the appropriate chapters when I came across something new. Then I simply commented what I learned into the code so that I could look at it later and quickly be reminded what worked for me.All of that said - as a review for the book, I love it. It explains why some things are better than others, often down to the hardware level, which really helps to grasp the material. The examples work great and I usually input them and change some things around to make sure I get a solid understanding of it. I haven't yet got to it, but Chapter 8 goes over various libraries, with cuFFT being the one I'm particularly interested in - I count that as a big plus even if they're just basic introductions. Highly recommended!
Awesome book!!! easy to understand, code works way better and easier in VS2013 than the one in CUDA by example, also tried the code in OpenSuse 13.1 and it worked nicely in my 780m card, also the excersises are fun to try, I totally recomend this book!! note that its examples are mostly run in Linux, and is focused in Fermi and Kepler archs and the runtime API not the driver API
This is a great place to learn CUDA programming. It may even be helpful to people new to CUDA, but understand the principles CUDA is built on.
Covers many important aspects in CUDA C programming, nice set of examples although some of them need minor code corrections to run. recommended for all levels of programmers.

It really gets 4.5 stars.This is a nice primer to all the openings, without going deep into all the variation and theories. This shouldn't be a surprise: there are so many openings, and even more variations and sub-variations to each, that it would take well over a thousand pages to cover it all in detail. This is not the intention of this book. Rather, the goal is to introduce each opening, with main variations lines to each, and supplement it with basic explanatory prose. On this score, the book achieves what it sets out to do.The strong points of this book are primarily its prose and its organization. The prose is excellent. The author provides a nice mini history of each opening, in addition to a few sentences on the theory. He then gives main variations that are typically played, and explores each one, with a few sub-variations. Occasionally, he mentions the development of the opening variations through the years, who popularized them, who refuted them, who famously played them and etc. The prose is also sparkled here and there with some dry humor and witty commentary, which give this book a particular flavor (i.e. "this move is meant to make a knight on e2 look silly"; etc.).The other strong point of the book is its exceptional organization. It is easy to follow all the variations and sub-variations given, because the book is nicely organized to keep the reader focused and without going into long and distracting lines of analysis. All the main variation and sub-variation lines that the author highlights are in bold and the few variants of variations/sub-variations are in normal font.The weaker points of the book, IMO, are that the author doesn't often mention (though sometimes he does) the common traps that exist in the openings. And I also wish that more theoretical grounding was provided for the openings and its variations. To be sure, the author usually mentions a few sentences about the strengths and weaknesses of the openings, but never going much under the surface. Of course, great depth is not expected in a survey book of this sort; but some depth coverage would have been nice.This book is geared toward intermediate players, and perhaps as a refresher course to more advanced players. It would have no use for more seasoned masters of the game, and might be a little advanced for the early beginners.In conclusion, it's a solid primer for all the openings and provides a good introduction to each, thus serving as a starting point for further and deeper exploration of each particular opening and/or variation.
Very clear text and format, including the diagrams that are just right in terms of size and quantity. I'm very impressed by the logical flow too. It's not just a series of isolated openings, but is organized so there's a flow to the whole book. Perfect for a play like me -- lifelong amateur, never played a tournament or had a ranking, just trying to get a real comfort level with the first five or six moves of the game (though the text will also take you several moves,beyond if you are inclined). A real pleasure that doesn't feel like 'study' at all.
This has just about every opening you can think of. The author's writing is very colorful, and he makes it enjoyable to learn about each opening and its history (how it came into being, which GM's have used it most effectively, etc). I suppose this is a given, but definitely make sure you understand algebraic notation before diving into this. I went through most of this book with a physical chessboard set up beside me, so I could make the moves as each opening is explained. That really helped my learning from this book. Only thing is, this book can get a bit textbooky in parts, but that is to be expected, and only a minor gripe. Overall, highly recommended for anyone who wants to up their chess game!
This book is great for a Class A player who is trying to consolidate their openings knowledge before making a push to the next level of rating strength, and/or more in-depth openings study/preparation.This book could also be useful for a Class B player who is making a push in the study of openings. Also useful for an Expert or Master who never took a broad study of the openings by limiting themselves to a particular repertoire.
Without a doubt this is the best opening book to start with, and possibly the only one you might need for quite a while. Oh how I wish this had been available when I started out. What's the first thing a beginner does (ignoring all advice)? He starts surveying all the openings to find a few that he likes (and then changes his mind repeatedly). Before this book that involved buying a book on each opening, at great expense, both of money and time. That's no longer necessary - you can buy this one and get all you need for that purpose. It does expect some experience, but no more than any opening book does.The book reminds me alot of Watson's Mastering the Chess Openings, except that it's much broader and less deep. It's far less selective and sophisticated than Watson, but it's not superficial at all given the target audience. It gives very good explanations of the general themes, historical development, and early move orders of pretty much every opening you could want, although it does have a strong focus on mainlines. For a beginner or intermediate, this book will give you enough theory to get started - your first half dozen moves with some deviations - but not enough to distract you from tactics and endgames. Coaches should love it. I'm sure they would tell you it's all you need until you are an expert.The book is targeted at non-Masters. It's perfect for beginners to intermediates - I would say this is an essential book for beginner to Class C. Higher class players would still get a lot of value as a reference for unfamiliar openings they encounter and for broadening their repertoires, but I suspect an Expert would get diminished value from it. It has 450 some pages of large page size and has a huge amount of prose for each bit of analysis.I bought this expecting to be disappointed by superficiality, but I was wrong. After the fact, it's hard to imagine this book hasn't existed until now. Thank you Grandmaster van der Sterren. Thank you Gambit.Update: I find myself immersed in this thing all the time - it's addictive. I defy anybody in the target audience to read about their favorite opening and not learn something.

This text is an awesome accessory or solo book for learning about local anesthetics, techniques and for a dental hygienist taking the local anesthetic certification course. Our class required Mahlmeds text, but I am glad I purchased this as a resource. I wish it could have been the standard text for the class. It has a great feel -softcover, not too thick and easy to highlite notes in, it fit in my tote bag making it easy to carry around. I was nervous about taking on the task of learning to administer anesthetics after being out of college ahem...25+ years this book greatly took the pressure off. I found reading it to flow well. The book offers great charts, full color photos and every chapter has a nice 20 question review test and scenario question. I found there was much more compiled colored reference pages than the required class text. The section on injections were much more detailed in step by step with photos and instructor an Oral Surgeon agreed the needle angles during injection photos shown were much more accurate than class text. The publisher also has a companion website to receive end chapter answers, and mock tests.It was a great companion rescource while studying for class. I would first read this book, then required class text. Halfway through I would just skim our class text as I found out this author covered it better and much more easy to understand. Oh, an awesome thing -the index in the back seemed so intuitive- when I thought of a topic I needed to get an answer to, or locate in book -it usually did not fail me vs class text was less than steller results. I just finished taking the NERB Local Anesthetic exam, awaiting results and feel this book made me much more confident in taking it and helping me pass.Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist, 1e
I just took the NERB for Local Anesthesia and I got a 90%. This book was really helpful. For the class I took, we were to get Malamed's book, which I only read certain chapters and skimmed others. What I loved about Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist was the tests at the end of each chapter and the website for more practice tests on the computer which were free with the purchase of this book. There were case studies also. I felt I learned it better with the test questions, Malamed's book didn't have any tests at the end of the chapters. Yes, there were errors in this book, and a few of the answers to some test questions were wrong. I did e-mail the author and she said she would have them changed, but I haven't seen the changes yet. So what I did was read this whole book first, taking all the tests in the book and online. I skimmed Malamed's book, and when I took the class, I felt like a really knew the material, I believe from taking the tests, it helps you learn it so much better, it makes you look up more things. Anyone wondering if this purchase is worth it, it is!
I have recently taken the local anesthesia and pain control course for dental hygienists. Our required textbook was Malameds. Upon research I noticed that many hygienists were also purchasing this book. I did the same and am so happy I have. It contains the same material as Malamed but in a language that dental hygienists can comprehend so easily. It includes case studies, easy to understand graphs and equations, and has test questions after each chapter. The only downside is that I could never access the online material the book claims you have access to with the purchase of the book. Two of the instructors that taught my course also reviewed this book. They are considering changing the required text to this textbook at next years local anesthesia course.
I purchased this book for a class. So far, it is packed with information.
I am a dental hygiene instructor and and my colleagues and I chose this book because it was recommended by other course members. It seems to be the source for educating us for certification. Logethetis has done a fine job on giving us what is needed to pass the written. The author or publisher needs a good proofreader; too many errors in spelling. My favorite portion of each chapter is the Dental Hygiene "need to know" section.

This book is perfect for local anethesia. The material is presented very well and easily understandable. The online material is helpful for the quizzes and further understanding the concepts. This book will certainly help prepare one for boards.I'm currently taking her course and was told that Chapter 8 is no longer relevant for the calculations due to the new WREB recommendations. Her new addition will be updated to accommodate these changes.

I can't even begin to address the power of this book. I also purchased Dr Tony Evans book for Married Men Only. The two books go hand in hand (no pun intended). I was 2 weeks from finalizing my divorce with my wife, NO JOKE. The combination of the truth that I was able to pull from these two books really helped set me in a different mind set. If you are struggling in your marriage with your wife, these books are fantastic for the man to work on his end. if you have a wonderful marriage already, I don't see how reading these books won't help you have an even more amazing relationship. Oh and these books finally answer the age old statement that most of us have absolutely no idea what it means... to love your wife as Jesus Loves the church. The understanding you will get from that statement will set your marriage on a whole new level. I intend on reading and re-reading these books for years to come. I am so thankful to have heard about these books on Christian radio in my car. The timing was impeccable... as God's timing always is! Oh and you should know that a week later, after reaching back out to my wife, I called my attorney and cancelled my divorce proceedings and began working my building up my marriage.
Another fantastic book by Dr. Evans! After a heart wrenching infidelity issue, I was at my bitter end. I had sunk into a deep depression and felt nowhere to turn. Church was helpful but couldn't cure my hurt and bitterness completely. Tony's books Kingdom Woman and Kingdom Marriage have opened my eyes and for the first time in over 9 months I feel love for my husband and ready to start anew. This book probably saved my marriage and myself. Thank you Dr. Evans for being the voice I needed to hear and the rationalization that not only makes sense but goes directly to my heart! I can't wait to read more of his books! â¤ï¸
As a newlywed, I seek to learn as much as I can from those who have gone before me. This book provided me with more wisdom. It is not just for newlyweds, but for anyone who seeks to do marriage under the Lord's authority. When we stay close to Him, our marriages will thrive.
If you know Dr. Evans... enough said. If you want to get your marriage right...meaning getting you right and aligned with His word, this is a MUST HAVE!
I'm almost done reading this book. It is an eye opener in how we need to live our life and treat our spouse. It's an easy read, and I've gained some really good insight with this book and hope to do this as a small group study.
Excellent book. This book was recommended by a friend anf I really love it. It gives you a better idea of how a Godly and lasting marriage should work out. My favorite part is that it quotes the bible in relation to what it says. Tony Evans is awesome at relaying messages about becoming a better Christian. I would recommened this book to even single people. It gives you the idea of what to look for in a relationship so while dating you will make better choices on who to marry.
We've tried counseling and many other things but this was the book that TRULY made a difference. It helps you to focus on your own shortcomings (not your spouse's) and seek God to change them. Until you are willing to point the finger at yourself and accept what you need to change, you will not see a difference.
Tony hits a home run with this book. My wife and I have re-aligned our roles in marriage because of this insightful read! Biblical advice that transcends worldly advice to be selfish and only care about my happiness. This book will save many marriages!!
