Dr. Becker draws on his extensive experience throughout Latin America in both the public and private sectors. There's no substitute for experience and Dr. Becker shares his most profound insights into the soul of the Latin psyche. (Dr. Charles T. Crespy,^LDean and JPMorgan Chase Professor of Business^LCollege of Business Administration^LUniversity of Texas, El Paso)I find Dr. Becker's book an excellent guide, not only for newcomers to Latin American business, but also for those of us who are veterans in the vagaries of engaging in commerce in the area…. I have seen and been involved with ventures which, if not outright failures, were fraught with tension, distrust and unfilled opportunities for profit. A reading of Dr. Becker's book would have made my personal involvement in these much easier and certainly would have been a good guide for those involved in the unsuccessful incidents I witnessed as to how they could have avoided the undesirable consequences. (M. H. Gilmore,^LSenior Vice President^LPacific National Bank)After reviewing this book, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about business in Latin America. Not only will it be helpful for those smaller businesses wishing to expand into the region, but it will also offer new insights for those already doing business there. The author provides a wealth of information and knowledge about the subtleties of Latin American culture that are available in no other single source. Futhermore, it reads easily as it rewards greatly. (Van V. Miller,^LAssociate Professor of International Business^LTexas A&M International University)A long overdue book with a rich understanding of the powerful transformations taking place in Latin America's social order and the business opportunities they are creating for small and medium sized U.S. companies…. I would make this book required reading for the State's Trade Specialists and endorse its extensive use in their statewide presentations to export seminar and workshop participants, Economic Development agencies, Chambers of Commerce, SBA, SBDC's and Civic Groups. (Roberto Castillo,^LTrade Director^LState of New Mexico)Tom Becker's overview of the history and current economic conditions and opportunities in Latin America are both comprehensive and compelling. We have been conducted dozens of trade advancement missions during the last few years and fully concur with his assessments and applaud his pragmatic approach and advice. Excellent job! (Winthrop M. Hallet III,^LPresident^LMobile Area Chamber of Commerce)A tour de force of practical advice based on sound research of how business is being done in Latin America in the 21st century. As a Latin America business veteran and accomplished academic, Dr. Becker knows the strengths and limitations of small- and medium-size U.S. companies as they venture abroad. Writing with clarity and wit, he outlines an easy-to-read blueprint to guide executives through all aspects of doing business ranging from broad strategy to detailed operating checklists…. I found this book to be a refreshingly up-to-date summary of how deep-seated shifts in the economic landscape of Latin America are changing the ways in which business is conducted in that region's growth-positioned markets. I highly recommend it as a valuable resource for practicing managers as well as serious students. (Dr. Arthur E. Snyder, Dean,^LTabor School of Business^LMillikin University)

A very interesting, well-written book. It covers both the current status of business and business needs in latin america and also the cultural aspects of doing business there. Most books cover one topic or the other. This one blends both into a good read. Gives good, practical tips on negotiation techniques, dealing with the government bureaucracy, impression mangement, marketing to latin american consumers and business leaders, etc. Makes you think of dealing with the latin american market from a whole new perspective. Buy it if you are thinking about doing business in latin america or even if you are already there.

Very good reference book for students of International Business. Reading can be a bit boring, but as a reference book, it fits the bill

I got my books really fast which was great because I could rely on geting the reading done.

I highly recommend this book for anyone doing business in Latin America.I recently expanded my business into Central and South America and was desperately in need of education regarding the business practices and social customs of these new markets. I am usually more critical in my reviews, but Doing Business in the New Latin America exceeded my expectations tenfold, so please forgive my enthusiasm.I was expecting a dry and analytical tome in the style of the two other books I had already read: Winning Strategies for the New Latin Markets and Latin America's Economy: Diversity, Trends, and Conflicts. These books were beneficial in their own way, but Doing Business in the New Latin America is in an entirely different league. With only six chapters and 236 pages, you might think that the scope of the subject matter would be limited, but Thomas Becker has managed to cover every base by presenting only the most cogent and relevant material. This book is written with a casual professionalism--I felt as if I were having a conversation with a well-informed friend. Topics that elsewhere are lackluster and uninspired are here presented with enthusiasm and even humor. This book was actually fun to read.I began speed-reading the text, but quickly found so much worthy content that I finished the book word-for-word. My second time through, I marked up the pages for later reference, only to discover that I marked up almost every page so much that my business partner had to order his own copy. The chapter: Using Cultural Literacy to Hone Your Competitive Edge (alone worth the price of the book and the investment of time) explains not only the current and relevant customs and rituals of Latins, but gives them context by explaining the origins and evolution of those customs. I found these stories to be as fascinating as they were useful.I was horrified to learn that many of my new Latin relationships were already tainted by numerous easily-avoided faux pas and that I had missed opportunities that this book made clear to me. Still, my business has only begun to capitalize on this vast new market and the lessons I learned in this book will, I'm certain, be incredibly beneficial. The entertaining quality of this book does not overshadow its pragmatism. There are negotiating and selling tips (that are contrary to anything you've ever learned in the U.S.), communication methods, risk avoidance strategies, management practices, and brilliant applications of old-fashioned business approaches to an entirely new market.I particularly enjoyed the contrasts between the business styles and social norms of our two cultures, often presented in crystal-clear tabular format. I was surprised to learn, for instance, that the U.S. fascination with individualism is not well received in Latin America, where collectivism is the norm, especially among workers. The comprehensive index makes this book an excellent reference source. A Latin associate mentioned guayabera (a style of shirt) in an e-mail referring to dress codes and I found four references to this word in the book.I learned so much from this book that I came away feeling like an expert in Latin American business. I won't say that this is the only book you should read on the subject, but I will say that if you were only going to read one, this should be it.

Dr. Becker obviously knows Latin America -- from the beginning of the book, where he makes some critical, but often little-known distinctions about Latin America, the author establishes solid credibility about his knowledge of the region and his passion for its culture and people.I do not have an economic development background and I am not an entrepreneur, but I love Latin America. I have traveled in several of its countries and some day may wish to work again for an organization that does business there. I read this book in part to validate and build upon some of the professional experiences I have had in the region. I also read the book to get a sense of resources I can find to help me find companies who may be doing business there. The most important lesson I really learned came early in the book when he makes a distinction between common law and civil law and describes how differences between these legal systems have impacted the United States and Latin America respectively -- I really see how the structure of the legal system, in addition to several other demographic and cultural influences, has really characterized both region's resulting histories.I was less interested in how to set-up and pursue business in the region, but I was fascinated with the negotiation tips he gave. The book dates from 2004, so it would also be interesting to see if some of his predictions about transparency and modernization have actually come to pass.In short, I recommend the book for anyone looking to get his feet wet in the region or who has interest in the region and would enjoy a holistic account of how to maneuver oneself as an American businessman in the Latin American region, or domestically with the U.S. Hispanic population.

Thanks to Dr. Becker for explaining in practical and action oriented detail the growth opportunities in Latin America for my small USA based company. After stumbling onto our first Mexican client, my team and I thought we better learn more about how Latin American business operates. Becker clearly highlights the economic and cultural factors that shape doing business in the region, as well as provides many "real-world" tips on how to spot opportunities, avoid pitfalls, and develop long term, profitable customers. An excellent book that provides current market intelligence on Latin America in an easy-to-read form.Chris Slocum

Thanks for a book that spells out how to find prospects, convert them to customers and still get paid. As marketing manager of a company that does not have bottomless pockets, large staff, or endless amounts of time, this book probably has rescued me from taking some very expensive, frustrating and time-consuming wrong turns.

Very useful for new business men and for future visits!

Praski's Guide to Warsaw Old Town is an excellent introduction to the area of Warsaw that wasdestroyed during the uprising in 1944 and rebuilt after World War II. The author takes you on a walkingtour of the narrow streets, shows you the castles and monuments and gives an excellent descriptionof a fancy restaurant meal at Bellini’s. The story is full of historical facts, little insights into some of thefamous residents and has many photographs of the area. If you are planning a visit to Warsaw, thisshould be your companion.

From the Inside Flap

"Full of surprises and unusual revelations . . . an informed and disturbing portrait of the new American badlands."--"Chicago Tribune "[Kaplan is] tireless, curious, and smart. . . . I cannot imagine anyone will concoct a more convincing scenario for the American future." --Thurston Clarke, "The New York Times With the same prescience and eye for telling detail that distinguished his bestselling Balkan Ghosts, Robert Kaplan now explores his native country, the United States of America. His starting point: the conviction that America is a country not in decline but in transition, slowly but inexorably shedding its identity as a monolithic nation-state and assuming a radically new one. Everywhere Kaplan travels--from St. Louis, Missouri, to Portland, Oregon, from the forty-ninth parallel to the banks of the Rio Grande--he finds an America ever more fragmented along lines of race, class, education, and geography. An America whose wealthy communities become wealthier and more fortress-like as they become more closely linked to the world's business capitals than to the desolate ghettoes next door. An America where the political boundaries between the states--and between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico--are becoming increasingly blurred, betokening a vast open zone for trade, commerce, and cultural interaction, the nexus of tomorrow's transnational world. Never nostalgic or falsely optimistic, bracingly unafraid of change and its consequences, Kaplan paints a startling portrait of post-Cold War America--a great nation entering the final, most uncertain phase of its history. Here is travel writing with the force of prophecy. "Lively . . . Kaplan has a sharp eye for social truth, and his encounters with a chorus of eloquent citizens of the West keeps the narrative humming." --"Outside

Much like his well-known earlier work Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History, here Kaplan (between twelve and fifteen years ago) explores the US west of the Mississippi and based on a mix of formal interviews and casual encounters with both picaresque locals and ivory-tower bound theorists presents an original and largely optimistic view of North America's future. His vision of a radical and largely positive change that includes a greater blurring of racial/ethnic identity and weakening of traditional governance structures and borders (albeit with some real pockets of urban disadvantage with almost insoluble problems) has obviously influenced some of Kaplan's later work such as The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us About Coming Conflicts and the Battle Against Fate. Strengths of "An Empire Wilderness" include Kaplan's willingness to venture off the beaten track and think for himself in a part of the world as seemingly unfamiliar to the East-coast based Kaplan as the Former Yugoslavia was some of the other remote subjects of his writing, while it must be acknowledged that at times he has been a bit too impressed with first (or colourful) impressions and has not necessarily been as critical or discriminating as he could have been in determining the difference between the merely arresting and that which is really important or enduring. Even where the reader can be unconvinced of Kaplan's conclusions, his willingness to be sceptical of certain enduring US national myths and point out the failings of both big government and laissez-faire urban policies suggest that Kaplan - if an occasionally overly-impressionable observer - is willing to do his own thinking and is not a doctrinaire 'neo-con' with ulterior motives as occasionally alleged by negative reviewers. Certainly worth a (critical) read if you are interested in a well-written travelogue with a policy perspective.

I've been reading Kaplan for years. He has a unique way of exploring an issue or region of the world and bringing it home for the reader in a way that balances history, politics, and culture with a touch of the exotic. Kaplan also has a keep grasp of the world and where it is going. Reading Kaplan is always interesting, provocative, and thought-provoking. I would recommend any book he's written as a good read.Kaplan brings a unique ability to not only explain the past and the present, but to imagine the future, as well. His writings are studied by Army officers trying to decipher where the future will take us and how they might best prepare for the unexpected. I've enjoyed reading his descriptions of Ethiopia, Afghanistan, West Africa, Yugoslavia, and his travels with the US military around the world, but this book is different because he is trying to explain the US and see us with new eyes. That's not so easy to do. I think you could spend the rest of your life traveling the US and interviewing people and still be no closer to the truth than when you started. The central premise of the book asks will Americans hearing John Philip Sousa marches in 50 years still feel the same patriotic pride they do now. Reading this book, I'm not so sure they will. Kaplan does a masterful job of trying to explain the past and the present, as well as the trends and challenges that may change the America we know into something very different in the future.

It would be interesting to see the changes, if any, good or bad to the sites explored by Kaplan.Published 11 years ago but probably researched more like 12 or 13 this book takes a look, snapshots really, of towns, cities, populations and the economics of selected middle, southern and north-western parts of America.Starting his journey in all places Fort Leavenworth,Kansas and working his way South to Mexico, across the border and further south into that cesspool,he describes in a pseudo-sociological manner the conditions he discovered.Plenty of interviews with the locals, politicians and other movers and shakers of that particular locale. He tries to and usually gets an honest assessment of what is going on, the local history, past and present and a futuristic glimpse of what they hope to accomplish, mostly to increase the local economy and make better the selected areas for the general population. Some have big ideas and some have realized the futility of their particular situation and are merely are trying to maintain the status quo. Then it's on to the more traditional"western states" of New Mexico, Arizona,California and then up as high as Washington state. This offers a good travelling map but based on the obvious changes since then I'm sure conditions have radically differed since publication. Some good writing and insights into the places I've never heard of.For instance, I'm sure you have heard of the Texas Panhandle at some time or another. But have you ever heard of the Oklahoma Panhandle?Me neither.Never even noticed it on the map but exist it does.A true to life no-mans land on the northern part of the state.A vapid strip of dirt ,brush and open space,a remnant from some Civil War concession merely 170 miles long and 36 miles wide. Still, people live there in an outback type landscape scratching out an existance after local Indians gave it up because it was so crappy. Many other wild places, places you would never dream people live are uncovered for you in this book. For those whose dreams of retirement to the lands "of enchantment" still bore into your skull on a daily basis as you plod and wade you way through your miserable job you might want to think again. It might not be what you expected today. Then, there is the movement of "reconquista" by Mexico seeking to reclaim all the lands we removed from their possession many years ago without their tacit approval.Trust me, they're doing a good job recovering it and the lower to extreme western part of America might someday be returned to them altering forever the landscape that was once America's or at least White America's.Were we wrong to take it in the first place? well maybe.Should we give it back? The jury is still out on that one.All in all it's a good look at what was.Areas of the country both exciting, prosperous and poor and dismal. This book is usefull to those who wish to relocate west. It will give you some insight into the future by allowing you now, to look at its recent past.Only a decade or so, but it will be relavant to gauge if what was planned then by various areas and individuals were able to come to fruition or not.As more and more people look toward the countries interior as a means to escape the coastal turmoil, over crowded conditions, the immigrant influx etc, then this book should be read.Kaplans style of writing is engaging and did keep my interest well enough and it will enlighten you, of this I'm sure.

How do you write something new and fresh about a topic that has been analyzed down to its toenails? You have to really “get it” and Naoh Rasheta clearly does. Written in an inspired Q&A format, this book really is “No-Nonsense,” which, of course, to the Buddhist means, “It makes all the sense in the world.”I am a proud-to-be-an-American Buddhist philosopher who lived in China for almost a decade. Which means, essentially, that I study the teachings of the Buddha, including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. I don’t, however, meditate, although I do contemplate. And there is a difference. The point is that whatever you’ve heard about Buddhism is probably both right and wrong. The teachings of the Buddha are so straightforward (notice I didn’t say simple) as to be very difficult to communicate. And, as such, they can take many forms, as evidenced by the large number of Buddhist sects in existence today.Noah Rasheta, however, does a better job than anyone else I’ve read at pulling it all together. And I perceive he is motivated to do so both because he cares and he appreciates that this lack of discrete definability is precisely what many sufferers in the West need, but which prevents them from finding relief. The language of Buddhism can be difficult, in part, because there are so many exotic terms used in its ancient teachings. But these terms are not exotic so much as they are merely unfamiliar and I suggest you largely ignore them. And Mr. Rasheta will help. He doesn’t ignore them but he does marginalize their importance for native English speakers.I like to explain how by using the example of an old tree sitting high up in a mountainous meadow. The tree is real. I can touch it. I can smell it. I can hear the rustle of its leaves. I could even cut it down if I wanted. I can’t, however, “know” the tree. The tree is a product of the things within itself but it is also the product of the climate, the altitude, the soil, the trees and vegetation around it, and an infinite variety of other variables that contribute to defining that tree, and all of which are constantly changing. I can only know that everything is interconnected; to know the tree is impossible, but the tree is real.Buddhists talk a lot about suffering. And there is plenty of suffering in the world today. But like the tree, we cannot truly know suffering unless we embrace the arrogance that would allow us to think we can truly know it. We all suffer but there is no reason to truly embrace it. And as soon as you don’t, whether it’s in meditation or reading a very good book like this one, you can hold that suffering at a distance. And in its isolation it will dissipate.Buy this book, read it through, and put it on your shelf to read it again. The writing is simple and clear and full of simple wisdom that you can reach out and touch.

Fantastic Book. As a neurologist, I have spent the past three years studying and understanding many mindfulness and acceptance techniques that have their foundation in Buddhism and have been clinically proven to have pervasive health benefits. Principles of Secular Buddhism can be applied by anyone, regardless of religious belief.

Originally, I downloaded a sample of the book. I didn't get that much out of the sample. After completing the sample there was some information about a podcast by the author. I decided to give it a listen while working around the house. The style of the podcast was very easy to listen to. I ended up listening to several. After that, I purchased his book. Many of the items in this book were covered in episodes of the podcasts. My only regret is that it was such an easy read, it over too soon. I will continue to listen to Noah Rasheta's podcasts and certainly consider purchasing other books recommended by him.

This book is a MUST read for anyone even remotely interested in learning about the core concepts of Buddhism. It is also a useful reference book for any new practioner of the Buddhist path, to help brush up on their knowledge, or even for use as an easy access source to draw upon and share with others interested in learning. The question and answer format that Noah uses, makes it extremely easy to bookmark and find any answers you are looking for expediently, without having to dig deep through various texts and complicated wording. He uses a clear cut, straight forward approach in his explanations, utilizing very easy to understand, real world examples and analogies that make learning about Buddhism an enjoyable experience. This book is truly capable of inspiring one to delve further and learn more. Excellent follow up resource or even pre-read to his first book, which we also highly recommend.

As a new interest into Buddhism this was the first book I purchased to educate my self and answer most of the questions I had. I read the entire book in one setting while. This was an amazing resource for people looking into becoming Buddhist

Wish I'd had this book a long time ago. I've read various books like Siddhartha, Old Path White Clouds, etc. which I enjoyed but I got bogged down in the unfamiliar words and various "schools" of Buddhism. (My Western mind asks "which is the best?") The level of detail in this book is perfect for the beginner and for the still-confused non-beginner, and it answers the questions that pop into my mind about the language as well as a bit about why there are different "schools" and some of the differences.

Very brief summary that is especially good for those with little knowledge of Buddha and his ideasUsing his techniques helpful for everyone
